Romania is situated in the South Eastern part ofCentral Europe, inside and outside theCarpathians Arch, on the Danube (1075 km)lower course and on the Black Sea coast, beingplaced at a distance ranging between 1050 kmand 2800 km from the continent extremities.The Romanian territory is situated at thecrossing between the parallel 450 N and themeridian 250 E.Romania is a Carpathian and Danubian country,located on the Black Sea coast.The Romanian seaside stretches for 245 kmalong the Black Sea coast, between Musura brook(border with Ukraine) and Vama Veche locality(border with Bulgaria).Capital: The Municipality of Bucharest.Main cities: Bucharest, Iaºi, Constanþa, Cluj-Napoca, Timiºoara, Galaþi, Craiova, Braºov,Ploieºti, Brãila.Main harbours:

position and to the three natural elementsdefining its landscape structure and territory: theCarpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea,Romania has the status of a Pontian-Danubian-Carpathian country.Each natural element, by its specific, has a certaincapacity of tourism potential, pursued on majorsteps of relief, increasing from the plain to thehills and plateaus up to the mountains, with theexception of the Romanian seaside of the BlackSea and the Danube Delta which present physicaland geographical original aspects.Romania holds a huge treasury of archaeologicaltraces, historical, architecture and artmonuments, as well as a valuable patrimonycertifying the continuous labour and lifeevolution on these lands and the development ofthe Romanian culture and art.

Potenþialul turistic de excepþie al Românieieste marcat prin douã componente esenþiale:- componenta naturalã, reprezentatã prinpeisaje spectaculoase, configuraþia variatã areliefului, condiþiile climatice favorabile,valoarea terapeuticã ºi abundenþa unor factorinaturali de curã;- componenta antropicã, reprezentatã prinvestigii ale civilizaþiilor ce s-au succedat peteritoriul României din vremuri imemoriale,monumente ºi obiective de artã laicã saureligioase, muzee ºi colecþii muzeale, elementede etnografie ºi folclor de mare frumuseþe ºioriginalitate, realizãri actuale de prestigiu.Acestea constituie elementele de mareatractivitate aleofertei turisticeromâneºti,prezentând opaletã largã deforme de turism:de sejur (delitoral, montan,balnear),vânãtoare ºipescuit sportiv,turism itinerant cuvalenþe culturale,turism profesionaletc.Poziþia geograficãîi conferãRomâniei statutul de þarã carpato-danubiano-ponticã, datoritã celor trei elemente naturaledefinitorii în structura peisagisticã ºi ateritoriului: Munþii Carpaþi, fluviul Dunãrea ºiMarea Neagrã.Fiecare formã a cadrului natural deþine, dupãspecificul sãu, o anumitã capacitate de potenþialturistic, urmãritã pe treptele majore de relief,creºte de la câmpie, la dealuri ºi podiºuri pânã launitãþile montane, excepþie fãcând litoralulromânesc al Mãrii Negre ºi Delta Dunãrii, careprezintã aspecte fizico-geografice originale.România este deþinãtoarea unui tezaur imensde vestigii arheologice, monumente istorice, dearhitecturã sau de artã, ca ºi a unui inestimabilpatrimoniu care atestã evoluþia ºi continuitateade muncã ºi de viaþã pe aceste meleaguri,dezvoltarea culturii ºi artei poporului român.

Resursele turistice antropice sunt în principal,urmãtoarele:- vestigiile arheologice;- monumentele istorice, de arhitecturã ºi deartã cu o valoare de unicat;- muzeele ºi casele memoriale;- mãrturiile civilizaþiei ºi culturii populare;- satele turistice.Între cele mai reprezentative zone turistice aleRomâniei se disting câteva cu caracteristicideosebite:- Bucureºti - capitala României cel mai marecentru politic, industrial, administrativ, cultural,ºtiinþific ºi turistic al þãrii;- Munþii Carpaþi - prin întindere, uºoarãaccesibilitate, originalitatea ºi frumuseþeapeisajelor montane, bogãþia de ape minerale ºimultiple posibilitãþi de practicare a sporturilorde iarnã, constituie cea mai mare ºi maicomplexã zonã turisticã a þãrii. Aici segãsesc renumitele staþiuni montaneinternaþionale Poiana Braºov, Sinaia,Predeal, care, alãturi de Borºa, Stâna deVale, Pãltiniº, Durãu, Semenic, Muntele Mic,Bâlea, dispun de hoteluri moderne ºi vilecochete, restaurante, numeroaseposibilitãþi de agrement, pârtii ºi instalaþiipentru sporturile de iarnã ºi transport pecablu. Turismul balnear are, de asemenea,puternice baze de tratament, cazare ºiagrement în frumoasele staþiuni dindepresiunile sau culoarele de vãi carpatine:Bãile Herculane, Bãile Felix, Cãlimãneºti-Cãciulata, Slãnic-Moldova, Bãile Tuºnad,Covasna, Vatra Dornei etc.;

The main cultural and historical tourismresources are the following:- archaeological artifacts;- historical, architecture and art monumentsof unique value;- museums and memorial houses;- folklore and traditions;- tourist villages.Here are some of the most representativetourism areas of Romania with their specialcharacteristics:- Bucharest - capital of Romania - thelargest political, industrial, administrative,cultural, scientific and tourism centre of thecountry;

- The Carpathians - due to their width, easyaccess, original and beautiful mountainlandscapes, rich mineral waters and lots ofpossibilities for winter sports, represent thelargest and the most complex tourism area ofthe country. The famous internationalmountain resorts Poiana Braºov, Sinaia,Predeal are located here. Besides Borºa, Stânade Vale, Pãltiniº, Durãu, Semenic, Muntele Mic,Bâlea, they boast modern hotels and smartvillas, restaurants, various entertainmentfacilities, tracks and installations for wintersports and cable transport. Spa tourism alsoboasts important treatment, accommodationand entertainment centres in beautiful resortsof the Carpathian valleys and plateaus: BãileHerculane, Bãile Felix, Cãlimãneºti-Cãciulata,Slãnic-Moldova, Bãile Tuºnad, Covasna, VatraDornei a.s.o.;

funcþiuni de cazare turisticã se înþelege oriceconstrucþie sau amenajare, care furnizeazã înmod permanent sau sezonier serviciul decazare ºi alte servicii specifice pentru turiºti.Nu se cuprind în structurile de primire turisticã

cu funcþiuni de cazare turisticã: structurile deprimire folosite în exclusivitate de posesori sauchiriaºi, pe o duratã mai mare de un an, indiferentde clasificarea acestora; locuinþele secundare alepopulaþiei, utilizate în scopuri turistice în modexclusiv de posesorii acestora; cãminele,internatele ºcolare pe perioada anului ºcolar,unitãþile spitaliceºti (cu excepþia sanatoriilor ºialtor spaþii similare ce practicã în mod exclusivactivitãþi turistice); vagoanele dormitor;adãposturile ºi refugiile montane ºi similare;barãcile ºi dormitoarele pentru muncitori,cãminele de bãtrâni ºi casele de copii.

În numãrul structurilor de primire turisticã

cu funcþiuni de cazare turisticã sunt cuprinsestructurile de primire turisticã existente la 31iulie din anul respectiv, fiind excluse cele acãror activitate a fost întreruptã pentru operioadã mai mare de timp, în vederearealizãrii unor reparaþii capitale sau pentrumodificãri importante ale capacitãþii de cazaresau/ºi a categoriei de încadrare.Capacitatea de cazare turisticã existentã

(instalatã) reprezintã numãrul de locuri decazare de folosinþã turisticã înscrise în ultimulact de recepþie, omologare sau clasificare alstructurii de primire turisticã, exclusiv paturilesuplimentare care se pot instala în caz denecesitate. Numãrul de locuri a fost determinatpentru structurile existente la 31 iulie din anulrespectiv.

(exprimatã în locuri-zile) reprezintã numãrulde locuri de cazare puse la dispoziþia turiºtilorde cãtre structurile de primire turisticã, þinândcont de numãrul de zile cât acestea suntdeschise în perioada consideratã. Se excludlocurile din camerele sau structurile închisetemporar, din lipsã de turiºti, pentru reparaþiicapitale sau pentru alte motive.

The statistical surveys comprise establishmentsof tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’accommodation having at least 5 beds ascapacity of tourist’s accommodation.The tourist accommodation capacity in use

(expressed in places-days) represents thenumber of accommodation beds put at thedisposal of tourists by the establishments oftourists’ reception, taking into account thenumber of days they are opened in the respectiveperiod. The beds from the rooms orestablishments temporarily closed, due to lack oftourists, for capital repairs or for other reasons,are excluded.

The tourist action is the specific course and theconditions provided by the organizing economicagent during the tourist travel.

The tourists participating in a tourist action

are the persons who benefit from the servicesrendered and sold by the economic agent thatorganizes the respective tourist activity.

În acelaºi mod se procedeazã la plecãrilevizitatorilor români în strãinãtate.Urmãtoarele categorii de cãlãtori sunt

excluse din sosirile ºi plecãrile vizitatorilor

internaþionali: persoanele care intrã sau iesdin þarã ca migranþi; diplomaþii, reprezentanþiiconsulari ºi membrii forþelor armate când sedeplaseazã spre/dinspre locul unde trebuiesã-ºi exercite misiunea, într-o altã þarã;refugiaþii sau nomazii.

From the statistical point of view theinternational visitor is any person who travelsto a country, other than his country of residence,for a period not exceeding 12 months, the mainpurpose of his visit being other than carrying outa paid activity in the visited country.Arrivals include the number of foreign visitorsregistered when entering the country.Departures include the number of Romanianvisitors who travel abroad and are registeredwhen leaving the country.The same person from abroad can travel severaltimes in the respective period within the country,every time being registered as a new arrival.Departures of Romanian visitors abroad aretreated in the same way.The following categories of travellers are

excluded from the arrivals and departures of

international visitors: persons entering orleaving the country as migrants; diplomats,consular representatives and members of armedforces when going to/coming from the placewhere their mission should be carried out, toanother country; refugees or nomads.

Sfera de cuprindere a anchetei o constituiepersoanele rezidente în România, cu vârsta decel puþin 15 ani împliniþi, din cadrul unuieºantion reprezentativ de gospodãrii.Unitatea de observare este gospodãria, princare se înþelege un grup de douã sau maimulte persoane, care în mod obiºnuit locuiescîmpreunã, au în general legãturi de rudenie, segospodãresc (fac menajul) în comun, uneorilucreazã împreunã în gospodãrie, consumã ºivalorificã în comun produsele obþinute,participã integral sau parþial la formarea ºiutilizarea bugetului de venituri ºi cheltuieli algospodãriei.Înregistrarea datelor a fost fãcutã prinmetoda interviului faþã în faþã, rolul principalrevenind anchetatorilor, care s-au deplasat ladomiciliul gospodãriilor ce au fãcut obiectulanchetei.Perioada de referinþã pentru înregistrarea

datelor este trimestrul. Date din Breviarprezintã cumulat datele rezultate dinanchetele trimestrelor I-IV 2009.

The survey coverage comprises residents inRomania, aged 15 at least, from a representativehousehold sample.

The observation unit is the household,consisting of a group of two or morepersons, who usually live together, arerelatives, do the housekeeping together,sometimes work together in the household,consume the obtained products and takepart totally or partially in creating and usingthe income and expenditure budget of thehousehold.

The data registration has been done based onface-to-face interviews, the main role beingplayed by the investigators who visit thehouseholds subject to the survey in question.

The reference period for data registration isthe quarter. The data in “The Romanian TourismStatistical Abstract” are cumulated based on the2009 quarterly surveys.
