Jean Jackson is a busy bee, so much so that Heritage Center staff recently presented her with a bee bracelet to commemorate both her 90th birthday and 25th anniversary as a volunteer for Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts Division. After seeing a call for volunteers in the Lakewood Sentinel, Jean began her service to the City on February 1, 1991, and still has her first day training documents to prove it!

Jean grew up in New Jersey, near the George Washington Bridge, and first visited Colorado in 1944, which was the summer after her freshman year at Barnard College. She arrived by train at the original Union Station, and after seeing the sweeping mountain views, wrote a letter to to her parents saying, “I’m going to live in Colorado one day.” Prior to making her trek out west, Jean took her first volunteer job in the summer of 1945, working at a state hospital in Connecticut. Due to the war, there was a vast shortage of medical professionals so college students were asked to fill various positions. Jean spent the summer of her 19th year making solo late night rounds at the hospital and has been an active volunteer ever since.

Jean and her husband moved to Lakewood in 1952, choosing the area because they had heard that Jefferson County Schools were exceptional. Jean has two daughters, two grandsons, two granddaughters, two great grandsons, two great granddaughters and one more great grandchild on the way. When asked about volunteering, she says, “It enriches life and helps people get a certain sense of self satisfaction. You make friends, and it encourages some people to explore their more extroverted selves.”

She notes that the best part of volunteering at Lakewood Heritage Center is the friendships she’s made over the years. At 90, she appreciates the vitality and energy of the LHC staff and volunteers, and credits that energy with keeping her active. Outside of the 60-85 hours per month that Jean is at Lakewood Heritage Center answering phones, giving cheerful tours and just being a friendly face, she can be found checking out new books at Lakewood Library, knitting or shopping. Jean is also a huge Broncos fan – she adores all things football, a love she inherited from her dad who was a high school football coach and physics teacher. 2016 is shaping up to be a special year for Jean and for all the dedicated and wonderful volunteers in Lakewood! The land now known as Lakewood’s Addenbrooke Park was home for more than 100 years to three generations of one family. Around 1868, John Edward Everitt and his parents arrived from Ohio after an arduous trip in a covered wagon. Everitt set to work growing cabbages and dealing in freight, later claiming an area south of West Alameda Avenue between Garrison Street and Kipling Street for homesteading. His home was unique to the area, as Everitt used wood and stretched fabric for the frame, painstakingly applying coat after coat of mud to the fabric so that it would harden into walls. Since water was scarce on his property, Everitt enlisted the help of neighbors to build a ditch, which helped him expand his farmable area. In addition to his cabbages and other crops, Everitt had an operational dairy, turkey farm and processing plant on the property throughout the years. Everitt eventually married Eva Morrora, and they had three children, one being Lura Everitt who grew up to marry George Addenbrooke.

Addenbrooke’s father was from England and had been invited to Colorado by Horace Tabor to work at Tabor’s Grand Opera House in Denver, as he was an expert on trap doors used for special effects in performances. George and Lura Addenbrooke had three sons, Richard, Radcliffe and Tom. Radcliffe (known as “Rags” to his friends and family) was killed in a plane crash on Guam during the second World War, and his widow later married Rags’ brother, Richard.

Tom was the farmer in the family, and because of his work on the land, was not called into

military action during World War II. He recalled one occasion when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited the Remington Arms Plant during the war he was out in the fields on his tractor. Tom heard the cheers coming from the direction of the arms plant and looked up in time to see the president watching him. Tom waved and Roosevelt waved back. They never actually met, though, since Tom went right on plowing the field, and Roosevelt sped off to his next appointment.

In addition to being a farmer, Tom was also a geologist and a gemologist. He reportedly built the fireplace in his home with rocks from every state and some from foreign countries. The fireplace remains a fixture of the park, along with the windmill that is located at the southeast entrance of Addenbrooke Park at West Center Avenue and Garrison Street.

The City of Lakewood bought 105 acres of the property in 1978. In 1987, five additional acres were purchased, including the Addenbrooke house. Planning for the development of the park began in 1984, and the park opened to the public in 1986. The home was eventually removed in 1997. Today, the park offers walking and equestrian trails, picnic tables, tennis and volleyball courts, barbecue areas, playgrounds, soccer fields, ball fields, a lake, a concession stand and undeveloped open space.

About Louise Nevelson: Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. Born in Russia, she emigrated with her family to the United States in 1905. Her unique artistic style was influenced by the cubist movement, co-founded by Pablo Picasso, and the found object sculptures of Marcel Duchamp. Calling herself “the original recycler,” Nevelson is most famous for her found object assemblages, mostly made of wood and painted in a solid monochromatic black or white.

ART AT WASHINGTON HEIGHTS ARTS CENTERStudents explore pottery, weaving, jewelry and more in our friendly, professional studio space. Younger artists ages 7-9 enjoy clay Mudslinging Camps. Creative and fun clay projects provide opportunities to learn about the possibilities with clay including glazing and firing. A one-day Clay Whistle and Wheel Camp for 6-9 year olds on July 6 introduces kids to the potter’s wheel and teaches students how to make and fire clay whistles. Older artists ages 10-14 can explore jewelry making, clay and weaving in the studio. Try our new Calligraffiti Camp, which combines graffiti and calligraphy skills. Teens have creative fun learning metalsmithing, outdoor oil landscape painting and wheel throwing in the pottery studio.

DANCE AT LAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTEROur popular Ballerina Princess and Superhero dance camps are back again! Whether exploring famous ballets through creative play and dress-up or superhero training through rolling, kicking and tumbling, kids ages 4-6 will enjoy fun-filled sessions. Youth dancers of any level ages 7-15 will want to be in our energy filled one-week camps to learn or continue learning the expressionistic style of lyrical dance or the different styles of hip hop instructed by the staff of BBoy Factory.

MAGIC & MUSIC AT LAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTERLearn magic from a professional magician! Students ages 7-15 will learn beginner illusions such as making a coin vanish and sleight of hand card tricks to more advanced techniques such as rope magic and how to theatrically execute a magic performance. Our returning instructor, Richard Nakata, has been performing and teaching magic in the Denver area for more than 30 years. And while kids learn a variety of vocal techniques in our music camps, returning instructor Carol Smith’s Group Singing is wonderful for those wanting to learn in a choral setting, and new addition Miss Emily will have kids moving and growing their performance skills.

THEATER AT LAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTERRanging in focus from Shakespeare to Broadway, our theater camps offer a wide range of theatrical artistry and technique for kids ages 4-17. Kids ages 6-10 will discover how transportation has changed and jobs have evolved by taking a pioneer hayride or building a rocket like an astronaut. Get a double dose of the popular Homebound Hayrides and Hardy Homesteaders camps where kids make butter, can applesauce and try some basic woodworking. Combination camps are also back! Art and history join together to create nature artworks infused with knowledge of Earth Day and the Beatles. History and recreation camps teach sports history subjects like breaking the color barrier in baseball combined with team-building and sports exercises.

ART AT LAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTERCreate! Learn! Discover! Art camps at the Lakewood Cultural Center encourage artistic expression and imagination in weekly themed camps that explore a variety of art forms: space adventures, animal safari, life-sized papier mâché sculptures and printmaking, just to name a few. Kids ages 4-15 will have fun designing creative projects during these weeklong camps. Some new camps for this summer: The Sounds of Creation with Arrilla Tyrrell, Journey to Thailand with Austin Fowler and Picture Book Illustration with Stan Yan.


Take a trip back in time at the Estes Motel! The two-room, two-carport building at Lakewood Heritage Center helps tell the story of tourism and commerce along West Colfax Avenue in the 1950s. After a complete interior and exterior renovation, along with some new attendant landscaping, Estes Motel will open as the museum’s newest exhibit at the annual (free!) Rockin’ Block Party on Saturday, June 11.

Museum staff are putting finishing touches on the interpretive plans and the acquisition and installation of the building’s furnishings. Estes Motel will take visitors back to the 1950s, an era of large automobiles and improved road networks which led to increased demand for motel services, especially along busy thoroughfares such as Colfax Avenue, also known as Highway 40. Before the interstate system, Highway 40 was the primary highway between Denver and the Rocky Mountains. Just like all of the historic buildings at Lakewood Heritage Center, this motel has an interesting story to tell.

In 1944, Clifford and Christine Estes purchased property on West Colfax in what was then a rural area of unincorporated Jefferson County. Sometime between 1946 and 1948, the couple built their home on the land, with later expansions that included two new buildings that eventually

became the Estes Motel. The two motel buildings were on the northeast end and southeast corner of the property, with the original home remaining the primary residence for the Estes family. Colfax was a narrower, two-lane thoroughfare in the 1940s, and it was in the process of being paved and overall pedestrian in nature. The area around Colfax was transforming from the farming countryside it had long been to the urban area it was to become with farms, gas stations, grocery, lumberyard and other businesses. By 1952 the area had reached a height of activity that included 37 motels along West Colfax Ave., with many close to the Estes Motel, such as the Trail’s End, West Colfax Park-O-Tel, Siesta Motel, Del Norte Hotel and Monterey Lodge. Answering to phone number BE 3-5297, the six-unit Estes Motel advertised rates of $4-8 per night. Highway 40 was the main east-west route through this part of the country, so all of the motels on Colfax Ave. enjoyed a continuous stream of travelers. After Mr. Estes’ death in 1959, Mrs. Estes sold the motel. Despite new ownership, the original name remained, illuminated on one of the many neon signs that helped define Colfax. The construction of Interstate 70 led to declining tourist traffic on Colfax, eventually leading to the closure of the motel sometime between 1977 and 1982.

Estes Motel was generously donated to Lakewood Heritage Center by Michael Bettmann, the owner of Colorado Frame Company. Mr. Bettmann currently owns the property that once served as the motel site. Visitors to Estes Motel at Lakewood Heritage Center will learn about the impact West Colfax and its motels had on the development of Lakewood. The Sounds Exciting! Summer Concert series is back and better than ever! She utilizes her ongoing study of anatomy and physiology and combines that imagery with medical diagnostics, histology and nature. The resulting artworks are intriguing, vibrant and intelligent.

FREE First Friday: Lisa Luree & Zachary Reece: Opposites Attract 6-9 p.m., Valkarie Gallery & StudioLisa’s vibrant watercolors and Zach’s black and white are opposite points of view that combine in a unique exhibit. With guest artist Mark Bueno: Push/Pop/Kick, whose art can be considered refined street art and guest sculptor Leo Franco, who takes a natural substance wood and abstracts it into a visual idea.
