Principal's Week Dear Parents/ Carers, Fete Thanks Thank you to all the Bowen State School Community for coming together on Saturday 2 nd of June to make our fete such a huge success. It is a huge effort for the community to stage such an event but the result was outstanding. So many members of our community spoke to me at the fete about what a brilliant event it was and how impressed again they were by this community event. Firstly, thank you to all the families and visitors for attending and supporting the Fete. It takes each person in their own special way to make a memorable event. For some Bowen SS families it was their first fete and for some their last fete. Both will have warm memories from such a united community that celebrates our children’s school. Thank you to the staff who contributed enormously to the fete. They helped organise, set up and pack up the stalls, volunteered on stalls including the BBQ stall, choc toss and the fishing game. Thank you to Ms Conway for organising and showcasing the talents of many students in the school on stage. We would like to take the time to acknowledge our amazing P & C and the fete committee who have given so much of their precious and often limited time, it has been greatly appreciated. It is their dedication and commitment that has made our fete possible for all our community to enjoy. We would like to make a special mention to this amazing group of people as they have been the backbone of the Bowen State School fete that have come together to make this year’s fete happen. These people have worked endlessly for months in the lead up to the fete behind the scenes producing informative newsletters, eye catching pamphlets, signs, Facebook pages, distribution, sourcing sponsorship, donations, printing posters, letters, forms, overseeing prior and after financial support and collecting and collating all donations within the school. Finally we would like to thank all our sponsors and donators for their generous support. Your contributions offset many expenses at the fete and enable the school to successfully fundraise through the event. Have a wonderful weekend. Jemille Malouf Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Attendance – A Culture the Promotes Learning Students attending school is such an important part of their learning journey. It is wonderful celebrating student success and improvement in this area. This week I have been speaking with a number of families celebrating improved and sustained attendance trends.

Also a big thank you for looking after those who have unfortunately fallen ill during the past few weeks with the tummy bugs and colds that have been circulating, the care you provide ensures a speedy recovery and a quicker return to learning.

As we approach the end of term, there is still a significant amount of teaching, learning and celebration occurring so we encourage all students to ensure they continue to aim high with their attendance.

Parent & Community Engagement I hope to see your smiling faces in our school over the next few weeks as we host the following events; • celebration of learning • whole school sports carnival • NAIDOC celebrations

Your attendance is very much appreciated by both staff and students.

Kindest Regards, Mrs Elizabeth Mayo Deputy Principal

2B - have been looking at numbers up to 1000, we created a number line from 0-1000 and then plotted different numbers on the line. We have also been making jump of 100s, 10s and 1s using the number line.

4B - We have been busy writing a traditional story with a moral for a younger audience, be kind to others. After we had written them we had to present them to other members in our class. This was quite nerve racking for most of us. James did a great job of videoing each member of our 4B. The presentations were clear and the stories entertained our audience. Mrs Brown thought that we had done a fantastic job of writing a text that engaged the audience. If you would like to come in and view one of us on the video, just let us know.

1B - This term for Science we have been looking at the properties of various materials so we could choose the best to make a boat. We had to change a material to make a boat that floated and held marbles. We could choose from paper, alfoil and modelling clay. We folded, scrunched, crumpled, flattened and used other methods to change our material. We wrote our predictions and then we wrote what actually happened.

3B - have been writing spoken procedures in the role of a character from Charlotte's Web. Some students were cheeky and chose Fern, the girl in the story, and wrote their procedure on how to make their mum angry like she did in the story! Most of them sounded like they knew how to do this pretty well! In Maths, students have been engaged when figuring out some fun mashup Maths problem solving activities.

Math Fiesta

During week 10, all students will visit our Maths Fiesta in the library, where they will take on challenges, solve puzzles, search for treasure and work together to create. Mrs Smalley will be hosting our fiesta and providing many opportunities for students to use the knowledge that they’ve gained, to solve problems in new situations.

Students have been designing their own sombreros to wear to the fiesta, using patterning skills. They have also been using their number fact skills to complete their colouring competition, with the winners receiving their own ‘real’ sombrero to wear to the fiesta.

Please check times with your child’s teacher if you would like to come along. Unfortunately, we cannot have younger children at the fiesta, due to the many, many small objects that will be present. If you have any questions, please see your child’s teacher.

Wow!! What a day. We hope you all came on down and enjoyed all the action and fun of the Fete. With fresh produce, the action and fun at side show alley, great tasting food and plenty of stalls it was definitely not a day to miss.

We must thank the many local businesses, volunteers, sponsors, community groups, performers, school staff and families that helped to make the day so enjoyable and fun for all. Special mention must also go to our treasurer Michelle Wright and Priscilla Coates who between them put in countless hours and hard work, the day would not have been so successful without their dedication.

As we head into the second half of the school year we have our annual fancy dress disco to look forward to. A great night when the students get to show off the moves and dances learned in music and the great parade of amazing costumes.

You may also be unaware that all the classroom fridges throughout the school are supplied by the P&C. We have recently audited these and will be replacing quite a few that are no longer working effectively or are badly leaking.

It is only through our fundraising efforts that this is possible so we appreciate and rely on all the help, donations and efforts by all our families.

P&C President

Our school NAIDOC day will be held on the last day of this term which is the 29th of June. The sports and arts team have been organising our NAIDOC day this past term and it is starting to look like a really exciting day. This year the theme for NAIDOC is “Because of her we can”, so a lot of our activities will be based around important indigenous women in our life past and present.

We have many different activities throughout the day like Indigenous face painting, Palm leaf weaving, Indigenous games which will be assisted by Girudala, Mob style dancing, Kup murri cooking demonstration, taste testing for the students, walk and talk about indigenous woman and a video made up of our school students talking about an important woman in their life . There will be traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island dancers in our morning parade so all are welcome to come down.

Hello Families,

Chappy Week this term was a great success. Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who supported with the activities and fundraisers throughout the week. The students vs teachers + Chappies touch football game was a lot of fun! We had a great turn out of students, teachers and parents and a big thank you to Mel and Mitch from Bowen Touch Association for refereeing the game. I am looking forward to being involved in the upcoming sports day and NAIDOC celebrations as well as wrapping up programs for the term. Have a restful break and I look forward to seeing you all back at school next term.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JACK AND COOPER!! Jack and Cooper represented North Queensland in Charters Towers on the weekend and were successful in

making the North Queensland Touch Team!! What a great accomplishment. The boys will be representing North Queensland in Bundaberg in August.

Well done to Ceallach Romeo, Talithia Lea and Kiara Mason who did a great job representing our region at the trials as well.

Monday June 25 th 2018

Qualifying students in each field event have been selected based on performance in HPE lessons leading up to Sports day. This is for students aged 10-12 in order to select those to represent Bowen State School at the Sub District Athletics Trials to be held in August. These students were required to meet qualifying heights and distances. Nomination notes will be distributed to students early next week for anyone who would like to come watch on the day!!

Wednesday June 27 th 2018

Sports day is fast approaching! We are planning a very exciting sports day this year as the whole school will be attending the Bowen Sporting Complex to take part in a variety of activities. The tuckshop will also be assisting on the day. A menu of food for purchase along with a schedule for the day will be sent out next week. Please return permission forms to classroom teachers as soon as possible.

We encourage you to come along and enjoy the day and cheer on students as they compete for Inter-house Points and Age Champion (ages 10-12). All welcome to attend both of these days!
