Thirteen trophies and over 400 medals awarded by a tough Chairman and highly experienced judges indicate a quality year for the Boutique Wine Awards.
Huon Hooke is a tough task master. He and his senior teams make their decisions after much careful consideration of each and every wine. Winemakers can be certain that entering this show means a fair go and that the decisions have been made following careful thought.
By all accounts it has been another difficult year financially and yet new boutique wine companies keep appearing, bringing with them their passion and love for well made wines.
The Boutique Wine Awards is the only show in Australia where the top size limit is 250 ton and by maintaining this definition we retain our uniqueness of purpose to fully support the truly small and independent winemakers.
We are proud to announce a new marketing initiative which involves a sales mission into Hong Kong. With generous assistance from
Austrade the AABW is managing an export opportunity for Trophy and Gold medal winners from this year’s Boutique Wine Awards. Seven Trophy winning companies and three Gold Medal winners have taken up the offer to present their winning wines plus others from their range to Hong Kong, Macau and Chinese buyers selectively invited by Austrade. The activities include tastings, master classes and a degustation trophy dinner at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong’s central business district.
Australia’s Wine Industry Label Competition which includes New Zealand companies, is open to wineries of all sizes in an effort to enable boutique wine companies to compare their designs with the commercial brands as they have to in the marketplace.During the judging I noticed a standout example of packaging from Taylors and used my CEO’s prerogative and awarded an Excellence in Packaging Trophy in an effort to inspire others with detail rarely executed in the wine industry.Congratulations to all.

BWA 2014 Chairman’s Report
Our Sponsors
There are always exciting
discoveries in wine shows,
especially this one, as boutique
wineries are the creative end
of the wine industry and new
ones are always springing up.
Among the trophy winners,
we found a beautiful young
nebbiolo, a commendable arneis, a superb chardonnay
from a producer I hadn’t heard of before in a somewhat
obscure region, and that rare thing in Australian wine, a
merlot of real quality and style. It was also good to see
Langhorne Creek figuring in the winners’ list: it’s a reliable
region which regularly produces excellent red wines but
doesn’t often receive due credit.
The shiraz class was – as usual – enormous: the major
class of the show, and revealed many good examples, but
the judges were somewhat disappointed at what they
saw as a shortage of great wines. With so many entries,
there should be a lot of absolute screamers. That said,
the 2012 and 2013 vintages are both excellent ones with a
great deal to offer the wine-lover.
We were disappointed that there was no stand-out
sparkling wine this year, following several years when
gold-medal bubblies were exhibited.
The number of entries was up slightly on last year,
although still a little below what we have come to expect
as normal. The same comments as we voiced last year
apply: small wineries are doing it tough, and while they’re
still entering the competition, they’re being more selective
with the wines they enter.
The judging was again a pleasure, with the entire 2013
panel returning unchanged. The judges were Gary
Baldwin, Toni Paterson MW, Peter Leske, Sue Bell,
Geraldine McFaul and myself as judging chairman.
Special thanks go to the stewards, who include some of
Sydney’s leading sommeliers, again led by Tony Venn.
They did a great job.

SPECIAL REPORT: Bright Future Predicted For Boutique Wine Industry
While big wine business is fine-tuning and tweaking, the
world of boutique wine is out there painting in broad,
expressive brushstrokes. It’s a pretty enchanting time for
those who work small, farm their own land and create
wines of beauty, interest and deliciousness – a ripe epoch
for consumer and wine community interest in the smaller
grower-producer whose hand is firmly on vineyard and
winery tiller.
The dichotomy is pretty genuine;
those that choose the ‘artisan’ route are
seen as actually having a hand in the
production of their final wares, not
just claiming the kudos for a wine in a
labeled bottle. Boutique can be a word
bandied about by any wine producer
or brand seeking an association
with premium wine; and is
increasingly an attraction
and agitation in equal
measure. But it will always
be those that are deeply
involved in the production process, and find their métier in smaller volume,
that lay claim to the genuine ‘boutique’ tag, and reap the rewards from an
increasingly engaged and interested audience of drinkers.
‘Our biggest challenge as small wine producers is to not only be true to
ourselves, but to make mistakes along the way’ says one boutique wine
producer, ‘if we turn our clichéd ‘boutique’ winemaking into a commodity
too, then we really are at a loss’. The real boutique wines are authentic to
site and a translation of this is found in the wines. Detailed vineyard work
produces their regionally focussed, best flavoured grapes possible, then
little intervention occurs in the winery to amplify the sense of place – the
greatest benefit of boutique winemaking.
The most important thing is to have some heritage in mind for
smaller producers, not just look to a couple of accolades or
faddish regard for the wines. The strength of grower-
producers of the boutique world is the wine itself.
This is the bright shiny path of the future.

Guardians of Winemaking Magic
Situated in Modewarre, which is just a stone’s throw from Moriac just
a few kilometres from Geelong, Brown Magpie Wines is situated in
the hinterland of the Surf Coast and the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.
The property consists of 20 hectares on a gentle, north facing slope:
the cypress trees, planted on the western and southern borders,
provide a warm, sheltered site. The resident magpies gave reason to
the company name.
The grapes are wholly estate grown and the wine is handcrafted on
site and only leaves the vineyard in the bottle. All of the grapes are
hand-picked and processed within hours of harvesting. This is truly
a family and friends’ business involving owners Shane and Loretta
Breheny, daughter Samantha, winemaker Daniel Greene and vineyard
manager Robert Steel.
The winning Pinot Noir was partially whole bunch fermented and
hand plunged in open 1000 litre vats, pressed at optimum flavour and
colour extraction and aged in quality French oak barrels. Up to 30 per
cent are new, from the finest cooperages of France. These include:
Taransaud, Francoise Freres, Quintessence, Saury and Damy. In true
boutique style even old barrels are carefully rebuilt at the winery.
They individually select and import specific oak styles from specific
coopers to suit their winemaking technique.
Wine Awards judge and experienced winemaker Sue Bell calls this
wine “a very fragrant wine with Morello Cherry, vanilla aromas in a
complex bouquet, very soft, gentle texture and superb balance.
A wine of great finesse and charm”.

Class 11. Pinot Noir Trophy
Wine of Show & Red Wine of Show:
Brown Magpie Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013
Winery: Brown Magpie Winemaker: Daniel GreeneRegion: Geelong Website: brownmagpiewines.com
Steward’s Food Match: Roasted duck breast with
thinly sliced nashi pear and
a sprinkle of sancho pepper,
drizzled with plum sauce.
- Sommelier Jessica Martin, Rockpool Bar & Grill
Judge’s Note: The quality of Australian Pinot Noir from innovative producers is reflecting
the work on clones, site selection and strong vintages from the range of cool climate
regions. Great diversity of flavours and wine making approaches put up some really
complex, creative wines with top golds rewarding purity and finesse. The trophy winner is
a very fragrant wine with morello cherry, vanilla aromas in a complex bouquet, very soft,
gentle texture and superb balance. A wine of great finesse and charm.
- Sue Bell, Winemaker Bellwether Wines
Winemaker: Daniel Greene

Class 3. Semillon Trophy
Winning Wine & White Wine of Show:
McLeish Estate Semillon 2007
Winery: McLeish Estate Winemaker: Andrew ThomasRegion: Hunter Valley Website: mcleishhunterwines.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Pan-seared John Dory fillets served
with lemon gremolata, roasted
kipfler potatoes and crispy capers.
- Sommelier James Audas, Est.
Judge’s Note: An exceptionally strong class showing
the success of recent vintages. The trophy wine is
a great semi-mature Semillon with straw and toast
aromas, ideal colour and a rich but very fine palate,
softly textured with great line and length. Shows very
good developed characters and still has a big future.
- Huon Hooke

Jessica, Robert & Maryanne McLeish
Class 4. Riesling Trophy
Winning Wine:
Ducketts Mill Wines Riesling 2012
Winery: Ducketts Mill Wines Winemaker: James KellieRegion: Denmark Website: duckettsmillwines.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Balmain Bugs with wasabi and
lime leaves.
- Sommelier Tony Venn, Rockpool
Judge’s Note: For the most part a wonderful class of pretty and
aromatic wines. The trophy wine has a long citrus-driven
palate and cleansing acidity – crying out for the perfect
food match.
- Gary Baldwin, Winemaker DMG Fine Wine

Owners Dallas and Ross Lewis
Class 5. Sauvignon Blanc Trophy
Winning Wine:
Paddy Borthwick Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Winery: Paddy Borthwick Winemaker: Paddy BorthwickRegion: Wairarapa Website: borthwick.co.nz
Steward’s Food Match: Goat’s cheese salad, witlof, figs,
crusted walnuts and tarragon
dressing..
- Sommelier Tom Sheer, Lo Fi
Judge’s Note: Too many overtly sweet wines in the class, but the
trophy wine has intensity of flavour, texture and
persistence.
- Geraldine McFaul, Winemaker Willow Creek
8
Winemaker Paddy Borthwick
Class 6. Max Lake Memorial Chardonnay Trophy
Winning Wine:
52 Stones Chardonnay 2013
Winery: 52 Stones Winemaker: Peter StanlakeRegion: Ferguson Valley Website: 52stones.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Pan-seared Salmon, green beans
with slithered almonds and roasted,
preserved lemon.
- Sommelier Tom Sheer, Lo Fi
Judge’s Note: A strong class displaying the great
diversity that exists within the Chardonnay category. The
best wines had depth, delicacy, and sensitively handled
oak. Many great wines from 2012 and 2013. The trophy
wine was a clear standout – a delicious wine with
pristine fruit, subtle lees influence, quality oak and a
long gentle finish. - Toni Paterson MW
9
Owner Darryn Rigg
Class 8. Other White Wines Trophy
Winning Wine:
Centennial Vineyards Reserve Arneis 2013
Winery: Centennial Vineyards Winemaker: Tony CosgriffRegion: Southern Highlands Website: centennial.net.au
Steward’s Food Match: Woodfired Razor Clams dressed
with pan juices, olive oil, lemon,
cracked pepper and thyme.
- Sommelier Jessica Martin, Rockpool Bar & Grill
Judge’s Note: A class of many contrasts. Though there
were many non-descript, flavourless wines, there were
also many complex, interesting and expressive wines.
The hallmarks of the top wines were balance, personality
and drinkability. The trophy winner not only had varietal
integrity but complex, savoury elements, balance and
length. - Toni Paterson MW
10
Centennial Vineyards
Class 10. Merlot Trophy
Winning Wine:
Banks Thargo Wines Merlot 2012
Winery: Banks Thargo Wines Winemaker: Emma BowenRegion: Coonawarra Website: banksthargo.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Roasted squab served with lentils,
prune and spiced peas.
- Sommelier James Audas, Est.
Judge’s Note: In some ways a disappointing class for
this great varietal. But the trophy wine has lovely colour,
a classic nose of sour cherry and herb - very enticing.
The palate is full of delicious fruit and some young
tannins which we expect to soften. A great example.
- Gary Baldwin, Winemaker DMG Fine Wine
11
Viticulturist Jonathan Kidman
Class 12. Shiraz Trophy
Winning Wine:
Tagai Scar Tree Shiraz 2012
Winery: Tagai Winemaker: Viv KnightRegion: Langhorne Creek
Steward’s Food Match: Cocoa-crusted venison served with
roasted baby carrots, beetroots and
red wine reduction.
- Sommelier James Audas, Est.
Judge’s Note: A mixed bag class. The 13’s and 12’s were
very good generally but the 11’s were ordinary and the 10’s
entered here were probabaly the best of that vintage. Big
class and standard not as high as usual. Top wine was
strongly agreed on: concentrated, plush and yet quite
elegant, with soft tannins, balanced oak and spot-on
ripeness. - Huon Hooke
12
Tagai Winery
Class 14. Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy
Winning Wine:
Anvers Brabo Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Winery: Anvers Wines Winemaker: Kym Milne MWRegion: Adelaide Hills Website: anvers.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Five-spice crusted lamb shoulder,
roasted with rosemary potatoes and
minted peas..
- Sommelier Julia Sewell, Rockpool Bar & Grill
Associate Judge’s Note: The 2012s and 13s were very good indeed, with many
highlights and five gold medals. The trophy wine is a
2013 - a concentrated fruit driven wine of great purity,
varietal characters and loaded with violet and black fruit
aromas, with ample soft, fleshy tannins.
- Simon Novak, Dan Murphy’s
13
Owners Wayne & Myriam Keoghan
Class 15. Red Blends Trophy
Winning Wine:
Woody Nook Single Vineyard Cabernet Merlot 2012
Winery: Woody Nook Wines Winemaker: Neil GallagherRegion: Margaret River Website: woodynook.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: A healthy serving of Osso Bucco
accompanied with Paris Mash,
a perfect match for the medium-
bodied and fragrant red blend.
- Sommelier Jessica Martin, Rockpool Bar & Grill
Judge’s Note: The class was judged without knowledge
of varietal composition, but eclectic blends rarely shone.
Best and worst were all Cabernet Merlot – due to excess
tannin and toughness. The trophy wine sings its varietal
origins with perfume and fragrance, and is delightfully
medium-bodied and poised.
- Peter Leske, Winemaker La Linea
14
Winemaker Neil Gallagher
Class 16. Other Red Wines Trophy
Winning Wine:
Grove Estate Sommita Nebbiolo 2013
Winery: Grove Estate Winemaker: Brian MullanyRegion: Hilltops Website: groveestate.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Roasted lamb rack served with
cumin glazed carrots and roasted
rosemary potatoes with a classic
red wine jus on the side.
- Sommelier Jessica Martin, Rockpool Bar & Grill
Judge’s Note: A really interesting class with lively
discussion about such diversity of styles, flavours and
mouthfeel. Numerous golds flagged by different judges
were re-assessed a few times as wines opened up and
evolved. The top examples highlight the maturity of vines
and winemaking confidence. Lesser wines were quite out
of balance with simple sweet fruit or excessive oak. The
trophy wine just kept growing and growing to show more
expressive aromatics and even fine but very complex
tannins. - Sue Bell, Winemaker Bellwether Wines
15
Owner Winemaker Brian Mullany
Class 17. Sweet Wines Trophy
Winning Wine:
Lillypilly Estate Wines Noble Blend 2011
Winery: Lillypilly Estate Wines Winemaker: Robert FiumaraRegion: Riverina Website: lillypilly.com
Steward’s Food Match: Lemon Meringue pie with a
dash of cream.
- Sommelier Tom Sheer, Lo Fi
Judge’s Note: A range of styles were presented. The best wines had
personality and balanced sweetness. The trophy wine
was clean and focused with a zippy citrus element that
helped balance the sweetness.
- Toni Paterson MW
16
Owner Winemaker Robert Fiumara
Class 18. Chris Killeen Memorial Fortified Trophy
Winning Wine:
Stanton & Killeen Rare Topaque NV
Winery: Stanton and Killeen Region: Rutherglen Website: stantonandkilleenwines.com.au
Steward’s Food Match: Chocolate tart served with
caramelised pear.
- Sommelier James Audas, Est
Judge’s Note: Sweet tinned oyster, cold tea and sweet cashew plus
great depth and complexity of age. The trophy wine shows
great depth and intensity on the palate with elements of
savouriness that make for a mouth-watering drink.
- Jeremy Nascimben, Winemaker Westend Estate NSW

A COMMENT FROM THE CHAIR
This competition acknowledges the importance of branding and packaging wine beautifully, it acknowledges that your product needs to look as good as it tastes and in today’s crowded bottle shops that shelf appeal is fundamental.
We saw some great examples of typography, texture, embossing and gold foils. Designers and winemakers are paying great attention to detail and following the theme throughout the whole bottle design, some great caps, neck foils and back labels that have as much attention to detail as the front labels.
The standard of entry was incredibly high this year, which was a joy to judge, after the whole experience I was left with a great feeling about wine label design as a whole in this country, all of the category winners are amazing examples of great design and branding. This year’s overall winner is a truly astounding example of innovative wine label and packaging design, a bottle that is impossible to ignore, a worthy winner.

An excellent modern interpretation of this traditional brand. This bottle displays a wonderful link between the colours of the logo and the spectrum of colours used over the bottle.Eye catching, innovative design resulting in excellent shelf appeal. Black muselet and naked cork are appropriate. The panel all loved the originality of the look and feel of this bottle.
An eye catching product with strong quality cues – befitting of the quality of the product inside. We loved the link between the bee on the label and the bee on the capsule – and how this ties in with the concept of ‘environmentally sensitive’ farming techniques.
Stunning gold foil and illustration of a pocket watch. The face of it on the front label and the back internal workings of the watch on the back label. The Pocketwatch image and story are a tribute to Robert Oatley’s Grandfather and to times gone by.The cap of the bottle also has a picture of an illustration of a clock. The neck has the image of a pocketwatch chain. The images and story all tie together to tell a tale of ancestors and the passing of time.

Beautiful illustrations on a top quality cream stock label. Simple and elegant. The illustrations tell a story of a dreamy week. The gold embossed heart at the end of the week ties in with the wine’s name and the illustrations are carried onto the back label to inform the consumer how the wine was made. The bottle cap’s gold heart ties in well with the label. The bottle neck has the Monday’s Child poem on it which ties the whole design together and completes the story.
‘The Piece’ is the result of an outstanding idea and a well-executed marketing strategy, paired with innovative design and flawless production. Housed in a high quality imported Burgundy bottle the complex label features the artwork of renowned street artist, Beastman, with multiple overlapping labels that push the boundaries of label application technology. Great work!
This bottle was a stand-out in its class. The wrap-around concept works well on the 500ml bottle. The branding is simple and clear. The autumnal panel with bronze detailing is stunning – it is opulent and luxurious with strong quality cues, and it ties in beautifully with the colour of this product. An individual, classy label. A fitting image for this young, innovative brand and a good example of how striking and effective simplicity can be.

CEO’s Award for Excellence in Packaging
We just fell in love with the simplicity and elegance of this package design. Housed in a high quality imported Burgundy bottle with a wax-dipped closure, the label features an illustration of 1,000 candles, which, from a distance, resemble small jewels. The bottle looks outstanding from any angle, and it is sure to stand out strong in such a cluttered marketplace!
A simple and stylish label. We admired the clean lines, the font and the geometric simplicity. We were impressed by the matte silver printing and liked how this tied in with the name. The label has lovely proportion, clarity and balance. The quality of the stock, the strong branding of the name on the capsule and the detailed back label add to the quality feel. You say “ …a bottle which ignites the mystery and romance of dessert wine” and we agree!
“A truly stunning presentation in all aspects”Judith Kennedy
Congratulations to our clients Friday’s Child, Robert Oatley Vineyards
and Tomich Wines for their trophy wins in this year’s Australian Wine
Industry Design Awards. We’re also celebrating our recent win at the
2014 London Wine Fair, where our design for Pepperjack Graded took
out the prestigious Drinks Business Award for Best Wine Packaging.
Whilst we are thrilled at all the recognition, our labels are much more
than a pretty face: the sales results they have achieved for our clients
are what we are most proud of. If you would like more information about
how we can help your brand, please email Rowena Curlewis
