BOUDDI NEWS June 2018 Apply Now for BFA 2018 Grants Up to $5000 If you are a young (15-25 years), local person wishing to pursue a career in the arts, the Bouddi Foundation for the Arts is now accepting applications for grants up to $5000 thanks to generous donations. Details are at bouddiarts.org.au/grants Applications close July 15; auditions are held on August 26; and the awards event is 11 November. Four recent grant recipients epitomise The Bouddi Foundation for the Arts’s success: Jordan Richardson, visual artist from Killcare; Alyse Faith, flautist from Ettalong; Harry Stranger photographer from Bucketty and Siena Palmer, opera singer from Umina. Jordan Richardson - Killcare Jordan received grants in 2012 & 2014 and achieved success in painting as one of 58 finalists in the 2018 Archibald Prize with his painting of actor David Wenham, and one of 43 finalists in 2017 with a painting of actor, director, and Bouddi Foundation for the Arts Chairman John Bell. Bouddi Foundation grants defrayed tuition at the National Art School for a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons). Jordan is remarkable for his generosity and support to the Foundation. “I’ve been on the visual arts panel for the last two years allowing me to reach out to applicants and offer help and insight. This year I will be donating a painting to be auctioned at the awards ceremony in November.” ” The most important thing to think about is how a grant could help, and base an application around that. From the perspective of visual arts, a self- guided project/residency or tuition would be good to strive for. Another thing, for all applicants, Work! Work really hard. If you are mad enough to want to paint as an occupation or whatever else, spend the hours doing it. Get good and keep working.” Alyse Faith - Ettalong Alyse Faith, flautist, is a recipient of Bouddi Foundation for the Arts grants and earlier Bouddi Society woodwind scholarships. "The Bouddi Society has been an important part of my musical development through support and encouragement since I was 8 or 9. I remember performances at Wagstaffe Hall and how encouraged I felt to play & perform to a supportive audience.” In 2017 Alyse attained a Bachelor of Music (Hons) in flute at the Melbourne Conservatorium and won competitions, including 2016 “The Talent” 3MBS fine music Melbourne Audience Vote Performer of the season. Accepted by the Royal Academy of Music in London (RAM) for a Master of Arts in Performance beginning in September, The Bouddi Foundation for the Arts awarded Alyse a grant to defray financial and logistical challenges of moving to London. The award was presented at a fund- raising concert in Sydney. "I was surprised and grateful to hear the announcement at the concert of a grant towards RAM study costs.” >> See Grants page 2 Art Show Bouddi: The Power of Place An art show for artists living on the Bouddi Peninsular will be held at the Wagstaffe Hall on the June long weekend from 9am to 4pm on Saturday 9th & from 9am to 3.30pm on Sunday 10th. >> Grants from page 1 << Harry Stranger - Bucketty

Harrison (Harry) Stranger, a photographer from Bucketty received grants in 2014 and again in 2017. “I’m in Japan as an exchange student undertaking my first major body of work with the help of funding from the Bouddi Foundation for the Arts. The work, a series of portraits looks at what it means to be one of Japan’s 32 million people over 65. In a country where

loneliness and isolation are common in older people, the portraits look at how loneliness affects its elderly population.

“Without BFA support I would not have had the financial means to make this a reality. The work BFA does supporting young artists gives them access to resources to lift ideas from their heads and into their chosen medium”

Harry’s advice for a prospective grant applicant: “The feedback from the Bouddi Foundation has been of enormous value. The first time I applied for funding was exhilarating and getting the feedback and support of people who were genuinely interested in my work was amazing. It’s something that I recommend any young artist on the Coast do. Whether or not you succeed in your application, you are putting yourself in front of living, breathing artists who will give you positive feedback and steps forward on your passion.

“My advice for the prospective applicant is not to have a focused vision, but an open mind and a will to express an idea through your own voice. Even if that idea is just learning what your voice is, as it was the first time I applied.”

Siena Palmer - Umina Siena Palmer has been singing and playing the violin since age 4, performing in concerts of Jazz, Opera and contemporary music. Siena has been a grant recipient from the Bouddi Foundation for the Arts; won the People's Choice Award at the Pearl Beach Association's Annual Scholarship Concert; and last year was successful in auditioning for the role of Mercedes in the opera “Carmen.” She was auditioned for the Western

Australia Academy of Performing Arts, where she is now studying music.

Siena says, "I love to sing and perform opera, it has been my privilege to continue to be involved in many wonderful and creative endeavours. I thank the Bouddi Foundation for its support.

Angela Brewer, Sienna’s classical vocal teacher and Artistic Director for Coast Opera Australia, said “I would like to thank the Bouddi Foundation for the Arts for the support which has helped Siena continue singing lessons, enabling this outcome - one large step closer to her dream to also become a professional opera singer.”
