VIVIENNE WESTWOODoffers support to the Boscombe Centre for Community and Arts

Dame Vivienne Westwood has joined forces with locals in Boscombe in a bid to save the Boscombe Centre for Community and Arts (BCCA) from demolition by the local Conservative council, who wish to build eleven houses on the site.

Dame Westwood said, “The arts, culture and our heritage should be enjoyed and harnessed for all the benets they can bring to this and future generations,” and that, “it is inconceivable the local Council would even

consider destroying this building located in the heart of the community, and so close to the beach, which is a legacy of the Shelley family for only eleven houses – especially as the Council seek to regenerate Boscombe through the Creative Industries.”

Katherine Edgar of BCCA Friends, the action group heading up the campaign for over 4 years, told us more, “Their social enterprise business plan, based on research with 2,663 residents, requires no funding from the Council and could breathe ‘economic, cultural and social revival’ to the seaside resort.”

BCCA Friends member, Linda Ni’Man added, “There are no wet weather facilities, or attractions in Boscombe to draw tourists to, so businesses have been failing for years. The site and building is large enough for a theatre/cinema; workshops for creatives; small gym; museum to the Shelley family; with room left to meet residents’ needs. Locals cannot understand why the Council have failed to put the BCCA out to tender to attract wider interest; we know there are parties interested in it.”

Katherine continued, “It was frustrating that quality housing is desperately needed, over ½ mile away around Boscombe Crescent is where most of the housing and social problems are, families could be provided for by converting Houses of Multiple Occupancy as they come

up for sale. At asking prices of £250K, each one could provide 2 large 3 or 4 bedroom ats with gardens for families; this would start to produce a much needed more balanced demographic around the Crescent and still retain the desperately needed BCCA. Not only has our business plan - which is essentially a ‘Vision for Boscombe’- got the backing of residents it also has the written backing from various educational and health establishments, as well as businesses. What I want to know is what will happen to David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ if it can’t be supported by a Conservative Council!”

At the time of going to print the BCCA Friends were awaiting a government response to their letter and evidence to what they say is a lack of due process over the handling of the planning application.

BCCA Friends were successful in obtaining Listing for the two original school rooms with English Heritage in 2008. An indenture signed in 1879 by Sir Percy F. Shelley contains Restrictive Covenants, restricting the use of the site and buildings to the people of the area for educational purposes; it was originally a school and later in 1962 it became the rst Theatre in Education commissioned by any education authority in England; Dame Sybil Thorndike was patron.

Planning application for the demolition of the BCCA was put forward by Bournemouth 2026 and granted by Bournemouth Council on 18th June, despite 938 objections from residents and only two residents in favour.

Surf Reef UpdateThe surf reef was created to enhance waves for surfers but has been criticised for not working properly.David Weight, who helped instigate the controversial articial surf reef commented in August, "The problem lies with the reef's top layer, not the whole structure. The base is sound and secure and has already become a habitat for hundreds of sh and marine life. It may be possible to clear the damaged bags from its top layer and then look at replacing them with fewer, lighter ones. This is a system which has worked very well in Germany, recently."

Current Status: Out of action after being damaged by a boat propeller in March 2011

Boscombe Land TrainThe popular Land Train has stops at Boscombe Pier, The Precinct (by the entrance to the Royal Arcade), and Boscombe Chine Gardens. You can reach East Cli and Bournemouth Pier on the train. Unlimited travel all day for only £5.00 per person, or £18 for a family ticket.

CRIME PREVENTION SCHEME Boscombe Crime Prevention Scheme

The economic downturn has led to an inevitable increase in retail crime, and retailers need every tool available to protect their business. With this in mind, the Boscombe Crime Prevention Scheme was successfully launched earlier this year as a partnership between the Sovereign Shopping Centre, the police, retailers and Guarding UK.

The purpose of the scheme, operated from a control centre located in the Sovereign Centre, is to combat crime and anti-social behaviour and improve the area for all. The scheme gives a clear message to the public that our town is a safe and pleasant place in which to shop.

The scheme is open for new retail members and all members benet from:

• Security staff logging incidents with date, time and radio ID and acting as liaison between members, CCTV and the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week

• issuing of Exclusion Orders

• radio rental

• access to up-to-date intelligence reports and photos of known offenders and their movements

• services of a Scheme Manager

• training and advice

• quarterly security meetings

The scheme is being rolled out to Pokesdown, Southbourne and Springbourne, and relationships have been established with the Bournemouth and Poole Shop Watch schemes.

Lee Sham, Store Manager of Boots in Boscombe, told us about their experience with the scheme, “Boots Boscombe has been part of a town link network for some years and now I am delighted that the Sovereign Centre has refocussed its attention into improving the current scheme. We nd information easy to receive and transmit between shops, the centre and the police and we often benet from this intelligence in our battle against crime. I would urge more businessess to get involved as the more intelligence we have, the more we can do to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour.”

If you’d like your local business or organisation to be part of the Boscombe Crime Prevention Scheme and help eliminate criminal and anti-social behaviour from Boscombe, please contact Malcolm Spicer on 07436 090937.

HELP YOUR CHILD GET A GREAT STARTthis coming school term

Your child may just need a condence boost, help with some basic skills, or an extension to what they are learning at school. Bournemouth NumberWorks’nWords can help them be their best and do their best at school.

Edward and the sta at Bournemouth NumberWorks'nWords say their primary goal is to make a dierence for children by increasing their condence, developing skills on how to learn, and to make learning maths, English, and verbal reasoning fun.

You will see your children’s condence grow as they learn new skills and methods of learning. This all leads to success in school.

These small accomplishments can add up over time and change a child's perspective to school and learning. The more ways in which we learn to solve problems, the more we learn.

Bo and Maya love coming to Bournemouth NumberWorks’nWords at the end of the school day or on Saturdays to start their extra tuition sessions, once or twice a week. Their mums say, “they love it; they get hands-on learning with individualised attention and we can see their improvement”.

Edward notes several studies where high quality after-school programmes are linked to signicant gains in standardised test scores. Most interesting is the nding that regular participation in after school programmes demonstrates improvements in work habits, overall behaviour and general academic achievements. Evaluators in one study found that academic outcomes linked to after school programmes included better attitudes toward school and higher education aspirations; better performance in school as measured by test scores and grades; higher school attendance; and less disciplinary action.

The tutors at Bournemouth NumberWorks'nWords are always happy to assess children's levels of maths and English skills and discuss their needs without any obligation.

No prizes, these are just for fun. Email your favourite brain teasers for the next edition - [email protected].

Put the numbers 1 to 9 in the boxes on the right.

Each straight line of 3 boxes must add up to 14. This includes the diagonal lines.

Arrange the 6 L-shaped pieces in the rectangle so that all dots are touching (i.e. adjacent to another dot).

HINT: The dots circled in green are touching, the dot in the red circle is on it’s own.

This is really dicult but completely possible!

The 12 matches shown make one large square and four triangles. Arrange the matches so that they make three squares and eight triangles.A
