THE MUSIC SummerKeys offers the busy adult an opportunity to be immersed in the study and practice of a musical instrument. There are no admission requirements. The premise is: come as you are and enjoy the study, the work, the camaraderie, and the beauty of the Maine Coast. The program is open to all levels - from very beginning students to accomplished players. Courses are offered in piano, voice, clarinet, jazz piano, classical guitar, flute, Baroque flute, recorder, cello, violin, viola, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet, Celtic harp, oboe, organ, composition, photography, creative writing, and cabaret. Faculty members, adept in their disciplines and experienced in teaching adults, tailor private sessions and classes to accommodate your musical goals and interests. While both study and practice at SummerKeys are intensive, the atmosphere is relaxed and noncompetitive. You work at your instrument in ways that are rewarding to you.
THE VACATION Lubec is a lovely old fishing village that feels stepped back in time. In a setting of pristine beauty, on a hill at the end of a peninsula jutting into the Bay of Fundy and abutting Campobello Island, it has remained isolated from the frantic quality of modern life. The international boundary marker between Maine and New Brunswick is located at the tip of the town breakwater, and you can walk into Canada across the International Bridge. One comes away remembering gleaming church spires, white clapboards with green shutters and fishing wharves. You’ll probably enjoy your five days at SummerKeys most if you arrive in time for the orientation meeting at7:30 on Sunday night and arrange to stay through Friday evening to try a bit of performance on your own (strictly optional!) or just to hear some of your new friends play.
Area attractions include Quoddy Head State Park and its famous West Quoddy Lighthouse (the easternmost point of land in the US) and, on Campobello, the FDR Residence, the East Quoddy Lighthouse, and a beautifully groomed 9-hole public golf course overlooking the sea. The great Fundy tides rise and fall about 18 feet in the crystal-clear waters surrounding Lubec, where you can see fish and watch harbor seals frolic at high tide. Eagles nest nearby at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, and you can take boat trips from Machias to Machias Seal Island to watch puffins. Whale watch cruises leave from Lubec as well as nearby Eastport and Campobello. Freshwater swimming and fishing also abound. There are countless lakes and rivers within easy driving distance and miles upon miles of spectacular hiking trails atop the cliffs by the sea. Area tours are available.

THE FACILITIES SummerKeys occupies a cedar-shingled structure built as Lubec’s Masonic Hall in 1826 and later moved to its present location, overlooking Campobello Island and Johnson’s Bay. We’ve also expanded into the house just next door, a large residence near the town center, and have recently purchased the Congregational Christian Church Parsonage. Behind the main buildings, a spacious double practice-studio overlooks the bay (as do several others). Additionally, a few local residents and three churches have generously opened their doors for our use. All pianos are kept in top condition, tuned to A440, and serviced weekly. Located in private, sound-dampened rooms are grands: two Steinways, two Baldwins, four Yamahas (including a virtually new C7), two Mason & Hamlins, a Chickering, a Hardman, and uprights: four Yamaha professionals, a Charles Walters, and a Steinway. The main building houses what is probably the best music library in Downeast Maine, including both scores and books.
THE PROGRAM PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are the core component of the SummerKeys experience. Our instructors are carefully chosen not just for a wide overview in their discipline, but also for their demonstrated love of teaching and upbeat positive attitude toward students. All of our faculty are active performers and bring this invaluable practical experience to their work. You may begin to learn your instrument, receive advice on music you bring, or ask an instructor to recommend material from our library. You will come away from these sessions energized with valuable new insights and a desire to work even harder on your return home.

PRACTICE TIME Practice time ranges from one to three hours daily, depending on the course of study you select. Lessons and practice times are scheduled so that you have free time to explore the area.
GROUP CLASSES The frequency of group classes is determined by each instructor. Theory classes will be offered during all weeks.
PERFORMANCE CLASSES (OPTIONAL) Keenly aware of the motivational value of preparing to play for others, yet equally aware of the stress this creates for most of us, SummerKeys provides two performance venues. Each Friday evening, students can choose to perform for each other and their guests; two afternoon classes, “Perform for Your Peers”, are student-organized (no faculty allowed), and so relaxed and informal that even the shyest among us may want to try them.
COACHED ENSEMBLE OPTION Coached Ensemble Option is offered all weeks. The faculty will place enrollees in groups as appropriate to each individual’s ability as possible. Music will be assigned and distributed on Monday evenings. Coaching takes place Tuesdays through Fridays. Beginners are encouraged to participate and are as welcome as experienced players.
GETTING TO LUBEC By car, Lubec is approximately 5 hours from Portland, 7 hours from Boston, 11 hours from New York City, and 15 hours from Washington, D.C. Bangor is the nearest transportation hub. It is serviced by several major airlines.
THREE OPTIONS FOR TRAVELING FROM BANGOR TO LUBEC: 1. You may reserve a car at the airport. All major 1-800 car rental agencies have facilities at the Bangor airport.
2. The West Transportation Co. bus leaves the Bangor airport once daily at 3:15 P.M., stopping beforehand at the Concord Trailways station at 3:10 P.M. The bus makes a stop in Whiting, 12 miles from Lubec, where we’ll meet you by prearrangement
. The return trip leaves once daily from Whiting at 10:20 A.M. Bus trips are approximately two hours.

THE FACILITIES SummerKeys occupies a cedar-shingled structure built as Lubec’s Masonic Hall in 1826 and later moved to its present location, overlooking Campobello Island and Johnson’s Bay. We’ve also expanded into the house just next door, a large residence near the town center, and have recently purchased the Congregational Christian Church Parsonage. Behind the main buildings, a spacious double practice-studio overlooks the bay (as do several others). Additionally, a few local residents and three churches have generously opened their doors for our use. All pianos are kept in top condition, tuned to A440, and serviced weekly. Located in private, sound-dampened rooms are grands: two Steinways, two Baldwins, four Yamahas (including a virtually new C7), two Mason & Hamlins, a Chickering, a Hardman, and uprights: four Yamaha professionals, a Charles Walters, and a Steinway. The main building houses what is probably the best music library in Downeast Maine, including both scores and books.
THE PROGRAM PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are the core component of the SummerKeys experience. Our instructors are carefully chosen not just for a wide overview in their discipline, but also for their demonstrated love of teaching and upbeat positive attitude toward students. All of our faculty are active performers and bring this invaluable practical experience to their work. You may begin to learn your instrument, receive advice on music you bring, or ask an instructor to recommend material from our library. You will come away from these sessions energized with valuable new insights and a desire to work even harder on your return home.

PRACTICE TIME Practice time ranges from one to three hours daily, depending on the course of study you select. Lessons and practice times are scheduled so that you have free time to explore the area.
GROUP CLASSES The frequency of group classes is determined by each instructor. Theory classes will be offered during all weeks.
PERFORMANCE CLASSES (OPTIONAL) Keenly aware of the motivational value of preparing to play for others, yet equally aware of the stress this creates for most of us, SummerKeys provides two performance venues. Each Friday evening, students can choose to perform for each other and their guests; two afternoon classes, “Perform for Your Peers”, are student-organized (no faculty allowed), and so relaxed and informal that even the shyest among us may want to try them.
COACHED ENSEMBLE OPTION Coached Ensemble Option is offered all weeks. The faculty will place enrollees in groups as appropriate to each individual’s ability as possible. Music will be assigned and distributed on Monday evenings. Coaching takes place Tuesdays through Fridays. Beginners are encouraged to participate and are as welcome as experienced players.
GETTING TO LUBEC By car, Lubec is approximately 5 hours from Portland, 7 hours from Boston, 11 hours from New York City, and 15 hours from Washington, D.C. Bangor is the nearest transportation hub. It is serviced by several major airlines.
THREE OPTIONS FOR TRAVELING FROM BANGOR TO LUBEC: 1. You may reserve a car at the airport. All major 1-800 car rental agencies have facilities at the Bangor airport.
2. The West Transportation Co. bus leaves the Bangor airport once daily at 3:15 P.M., stopping beforehand at the Concord Trailways station at 3:10 P.M. The bus makes a stop in Whiting, 12 miles from Lubec, where we’ll meet you by prearrangement
. The return trip leaves once daily from Whiting at 10:20 A.M. Bus trips are approximately two hours.
