SAFETY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY AND ACTIVE LEARNING 1 Boonah State School Established 1878 Principal’s News And just like that, half of term 1 has passed. It truly has been a wonderful start to the year. We have welcomed our new staff and families who have added value to our team, opened a refurbished amenities block which is modern and clean, visited MOEC for our year 6 students to form new friendships and become leaders, ventured to the Boonah Pool to advance our water safety skills and above all learned new skills and knowledge to equip us for the ever-evolving world. Thank you all for your support of what we do, we enjoy working in partnership with families and community to achieve great things Year 6 Camp Last week our year 6 students attended the annual Transition and Leadership camp at Maroon Outdoor Education Centre. When I visited I saw many smiling (albeit slightly exhausted) faces engaged in their learning. The children were keen to tell me of their favourite (and not so favourite) experiences and to introduce me to their new friends from local schools. A huge thank you to Mrs Kostecki, Ms Collins, Mrs Hurren and Mr Mellican for giving up time away from their families and lives to invest in the development of the kids. Camp is one of many tasks our staff commit to for no extra pay, but simply their dedication to kids. Year 5 Camp Our year 5 students will be attending camp at Emu Gully from Tues 5 th Fri 8 th May. Notes were sent home last week with some details of this camp to gauge the numbers of children attending. We need these numbers so we can finalise our planning and calculate the actual cost. Please return these by the due date. I realise that school camp is a considerable cost to families, but I strongly recommend the experience. If families put away $23 a week until the start of this camp, they would easily cover the cost. I controversially encouraged the children to consider sacrificing tuckshop for the weeks leading to camp to assist in this savings plan. P&C Meeting and AGM All parents and friends of the school are warmly invited to be part of our school’s P&C. We have a number of people stepping down after years of service to the school and we are concerned that we will not have sufficient members to form an executive. If we cannot form an executive then we cannot have a P&C at the school. Without a P&C we: Cannot have a tuckshop Will need to outsource our uniform shop to an external provider (which will mean increased costs for uniforms) Cannot allow volunteers into classrooms because they will not be covered by insurance Cannot raise funds to support the resourcing of the school Cannot provide valuable networking opportunities for parents Do not have a parent voice for consultation on key policy decisions and changes to processes Please consider joining this invaluable association which works closely with the school to ensure continued improvement for your kids. Respectful Relationships Parents are reminded of their significant influence on the way children interact with each other. Children look to us and how we talk to other adults to determine how to interact with others and how to resolve conflicts. We have a great opportunity to model the change we hope to see. We have the chance to demonstrate the kindness we wish to see in others through fostering a generation of children who learn to ignore unkindness and respond with kindness. We can teach children to resolve conflicts respectfully and productively. We believe strongly in our role in fostering a culture of optimism and kindness. As a school, we are keen to promote these respectful relationships. Our Department of Education shares this belief and supports us through the Hostile People on School Premises, Wilful Disturbance and Trespass Policy. This policy is intended to keep parents, staff and children safe. Parents should not approach children, other parents or staff in a hostile manner or the powers of this policy will need to be applied. 03/03/2020 Boonah State School Principal: Mark Winrow 3 Park Street, Boonah Q 4310 Ph: 5460 6333 Fax: 5460 6300 Web Site: www.boonahss.eq.edu.au Email: [email protected] Report Absences: by phone, written note, in person or email [email protected] or Access QParents App Every Day Counts at School

Sausage Sizzle Our sausage sizzle begins again this Friday. With the new lunchtime routine, it will be our student leaders who will prepare the orders for our classes during playtime, ready to be freshly delivered during eating time. They will then decide how the funds will be injected back into the school through special projects. Traditionally, one of the ways they use the funds is to subsidise camps for families. Student Leader Induction Our Student Leaders are eagerly awaiting their induction being held this Friday, after its postponement. Our entire community are warmly welcomed to join us for this special occasion on Friday 6 March at 9am in the hall. At this ceremony, we will present badges to our Student Leaders and our usual weekly certificates. All families are invited to share morning tea with us following the parade. Playground Use Out of School Hours The safety of our children and their families is very important to us. Therefore, families are reminded of our expectations regarding playgrounds.

Only children enrolled at the school have permission to use our playgrounds.

Our playgrounds are not to be used before children are released at 8:30 and supervised by staff.

Our playgrounds are not be used after 3pm. I realise that this can be difficult because they look so inviting for young children, however we must ask families to follow these expectations for the safety of children and the school. Our playgrounds are designed for school-aged children.
