Each of the following books describes what Energy is, how it changes from on for to another, and the different types of energy in a straightforward scientific format. Each book description also contains links to lesson plans or related websites that would be useful for teaching concepts presented in each book.

Energy from the Sun (Rookie Read-About Science) by Allan Fowler Fowler, A. (1997). Energy From the Sun. Chicago: Childrens Press Inc. [ISBN: 0-516- 20432-7] Energy from the Sun is a simplistic description of what energy is. The story begins by helping children to make a connection to how energy is used in their everyday lives such as when they move or play. It then presents the question “Where do you get your energy?” which leads into a description of what energy is. Real photographs will help students to easily comprehend the story. This book is particularly helpful for English Language Learners because at the end of the story there is a picture glossary of terms. An index is also available for quick reference. Energy is in our food, it’s in our environment, and even when we sleep energy fuels our bodies to create what we need to move, talk, and think. But scientists tell us some of the fuels that keep our homes and businesses running, power our transportation, and keep us safe are hurting Earth. This book explains why energy companies are working to come up with cleaner ways to supply oil and gas, how fuels in the future will be safer for Earth, and what you can do now to use energy wisely. The book features, Table of Contents; Glossary; For More Information including books and web sites; Index; photos and captions; charts and graphs; source notes. The pictures are very helpful for ELL’s to visualize the books content and the language used makes a very complicated subject easy to understand which is also helpful for ELL’s.
