MARCH BOOK OF THE MONTH News

PUREAndrew Miller

A year of bones, of grave-dirt, relentless work. Of mummified corpses and chanting priests. A year of rape, suicide, sudden death. Of friendship too. Of desire. Of love... A year unlike any other he has lived.

Deep in the heart of Paris, its oldest cemetery is, by 1785, overflowing, tainting the very breath of those who live nearby. Into their midst comes Jean-Baptiste

Baratte, a young, provincial engineer charged by the king with demolishing it. At first Baratte sees this as a chance to clear the burden of history, a fit-ting task for a modern man of reason. But before long, he begins to suspect that the destruction of the cemetery might be a prelude to his own.

COSTA AWARD WINNER 2011The COSTA award is one of the UK’s most prestigious and popular literary prizes and recognises some of the most enjoyable books of the year by writers based in the UK & Ireland. In 2011 Andrew Miller’s “Pure” won the Costa Award - over $40,000 in prize money.

ABOUT THE AUTHORAndrew Miller was born in Bristol in 1960. He has lived in Spain, Japan, Ireland and France, and currently lives in Somerset. His first novel, Ingenious Pain, was published in 1997 and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the Grinzane Cavour prize in Italy. He has since written four novels: Casanova, Oxygen, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award and the Booker Prize in 2001, The Optimists, and One Morning Like a Bird.

February was a very busy time for Robinsons Bookshop. We have started our 49th year with a bang! In February we launched our rebuilt website and we have already doubled the traffic on our website and on our facebook page too.

In February we also launched our e-book offer on our website. You can now purchase ebooks from Robinsons Cloud. Just follow the ebooks links on our website. There are instructions online on how to get started if you are not too sure how to go about it.

You may have noticed that Robinsons Bookshop was the subject of a story in The Age newspaper during February. It was exciting to see the story appear, and then be picked up by the Sydney Morning Herald as well. Online there were lots of comments about the story. Some people were proclaiming the end of bookshops, whilst others were

supportive of our endeavor. We would like to thank everyone for their interest in following the story and being involved.Photo: Michael Clayton-Jones.

We look forward to meeting and coming to understand the Greensbor-ough community, and supporting their interest in reading.

And for now GOOD READING!

ReviewsTHE ONE AND ONLY IVANKatherine ApplegateThe One and Only Ivan is a well written story about a Gorilla who lives on display in a Mall called ‘Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade’. His only companions there are the owner Mack, the cleaner and his daugh-ter George and Julia, a dog named Bob and Stella the elephant. Ivan can barely remember his life before he

came to be at the Mall. He spends his days eating, watching an old T.V. (although there are no lead Gorilla actor’s) eating, talking with Stella and Bob, eating and drawing.Life continues on for a while like this until certain events happen with a new arrival at the Mall, a tragic loss and financial difficulties for the owner of the mini Mall circus. Suddenly everything seems different! Ivan has now made a promise that he intends to keep. If only he can figure out a way to make it happen!Inspired by real life events, The One and Only Ivan is beautifully told from the point of view of Ivan and has funny, sweet and sad moments that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster!

FAULT IN OUR STARSJohn GreenI’ll admit, the mass amounts of attention John Green’s latest book drew from both the literary and internet communities made me a little wary about reading The Fault in Our Stars. However the stark combination of wit and mortality narrator Hazel displays is refreshing,

hilarious and heartbreaking. Green tells the story of Hazel’s journey with terminal cancer, her relationship with Augustus Waters, living life one foot in the grave and humanity’s most basic desire to be noticed by the universe. The New York Times review of the book called it “a blend of melancholy, sweet, philosophical and funny” and said that it “stays the course of tragic realism”. Green explores the fact that terrible things happen to great people, through two young adults helping themselves (and those closest to them) coming to terms with it. Green has always been a writer categorized in young adult fiction, though writing with such elegance, mischief and profundity I would recommend him to readers of any age. NPR’s Rachel Syme noted that “[Green’s] voice is so compulsively readable that it defies categoriza-tion” and she could not be more right. I loved this book as much as his others and Green yet again reminded me that authors don’t need to patronize their readers to sell books. Laura K.

CINDERMarissa Meyer Cinder is a modern and futuristic take on Cinderella. At first, I was a little hesitant as I was unsure if someone could make Cinderella work well, and was I shocked and surprised at how much I absolutely loved this novel. Cinder is a gifted cyborg who cannot remem-ber her past and lives in a world where humans and

androids live together in New Beijing. A deadly plague is killing the population slowly and there is currently no cure. Cinder is considered a second-class citizen who has a vile mother that regularly voices her distaste for having to support Cinder, even though she is the only one in the family who works. When the unthinkable happens, and Cinder’s stepsister catches the plague, Cinder is blamed. Not all is doom and gloom, as Cinder’s life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai; who is a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.Cinder is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles and I am on edge wait-ing for the next book. This is a fantastic novel that I read in one day because I could not and would not leave the world of Cinder.

THE CHEMISTRY OF TEARSPeter Carey As the title suggests this is a novel about the mechanics of grief. It is also a book about how technology can lead us astray by blinding and diverting us from the human attachments that surround us. These are weighty and complex themes but Peter Carey masterfully examines and teases them out in a story that is tragic, funny, eccentric

and, finally, enigmatic. The story follows a museum conservator whose decade-long affair with a married man ends with his sudden death - unable to grieve publicly because of the illicit nature of their relationship her despair has no outlet except through her work; she plunges into the restoration of a mysterious nineteenth-century mechanical swan, commissioned by a man for his desperately ill son and whose efforts to get the automaton made in Germany make up the other half of the narrative. Carey switches between the two stories in alternate chapters, a device he’s become quite fond of, and both stories grip, intrigue and overlap in strange and unexpected ways. The author has a beautiful turn of phrase, often so good that I started underlining passages, something I never usually do; the book is also very funny, getting some terrific black comedy out of some seemingly grim subject matter. “The Chemistry of Tears” is very much like the automaton machine that dominates the story - uncanny, sinister but exquisite. Paul.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYNColin Clark“My Week With Marilyn” is divided up into 2 books – “The Prince, The Showgirl & Me” and “My Week With Marilyn.” The first book feels almost littered with stars, from Sir Lau-rence Olivier to Vivien Leigh and of course Marilyn Monroe. I found his accounts of the film industry and the making of the movie endlessly entertaining. He goes into detail about

backstage tensions, and the fascinating process of just what it takes to put together a Hollywood film. The second book, titled “My Week with Marilyn” is a touching account of the 9 days Colin Clark spent with Marilyn Monroe. The reader is privileged to be able to see Marilyn escape from the pressures of Hollywood – even if it just for that week. As the friendship between the two of them grows, Marilyn sees Colin as a close confidant, someone she could share her innermost thoughts and feelings with. The book is achingly beautiful in parts, tragic in others – it will have you laughing, crying and thoroughly fascinated to the very last page. This is a wonderful read, not just for anyone with an interest in Marilyn Monroe but also for those who are fascinated by the glamour that was old Hollywood.Written with a frank honesty, which is very refreshing “My Week with Marilyn” is one of the best Marilyn Monroe biographies I’ve read. Laura I.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UNLIKELYMungo MacCallumA few great names have endured in the Australian media providing political commentary to Australians over multiple decades. One of those names is Mungo MacCallum, the jocular journalist who has reported from Canberra for the past thirty years and now has a new book out, “The Good, The Bad & The Unlikely”, compiling snapshots of all twenty

seven Prime Ministers of Australia, from Edmund Barton to Julia Gillard.MacCallum established his reputation as a writer who injects fun into the often dull world of politics. In short five to ten page biographies, MacCallum captures the lives of each of our Prime Ministers by weaving together private stories with public records in an irreverent, often comical and always enjoy-able fashion. For those of us who are interested in Australian history but might not be able to remember Joseph Cook’s achievements as Prime Minister, MacCallum’s book is a great read. The book is light, entertaining and full of gems of infor-mation left out of the often dry political biographies which cross the shelf.
