Connecting with the community

People are starting to connect with the world around them in different ways, with mobile phones and online shopping only the beginning! Despite the ever-changing digital age, the need to connect with others and the community is as important as ever.

What does community mean to you?

Community can be both a feeling, and a way of describing relationships amongst people. The feeling of community comes from shared experiences, and a sense of shared history. Feeling connected to your community is an important part of overall health and wellbeing, and fosters a collective sense of support and safety.

In this edition of Age in Focus, we are focusing on keeping active, and connecting with others in Banyule. Have a look at different clubs or activities where you might be able to try something new, or find information on what is taking place.

Staying active

Moving and staying active as we age does not have to be time consuming or exhausting. A little effort every day to do a little more than the day before is all you need.

Start by increasing the amount of time you spend walking – walk to the shops (and back with the shopping is even better), around the block or even around the house. Getting up from your chair and walking for 2-5 minutes every hour is recommended.

There are lots of exercises we can do while watching TV, or waiting for the kettle to boil. At Banyule Leisure we call these ‘Kettleboiler’ exer-cises. Calf raises, squats, leg curls, side bends and knee raises can all be done holding on to the kitchen counter to help balance. Exercise during the ads while watching TV. These mobility and muscle activation exercises can increase the range of motion of your joints and increase flexibility,

helping you perform the activities of daily life with less stiffness, or less pain.

The older we get the more important it is to do resistance work. Grab a tin of beans in each hand and do a shoulder press, a bicep curl and a tricep extension. To really gain a strength benefit keep hold of the tins and perform a squat. These are great exercises for falls prevention, working both the strength of your legs and the base of support/centre of gravity relationship.

Why not perform stretches lying in bed and exercise before getting up for the day. Gardening is also great exercise, but be careful not to over reach when pulling those weeds.

So there is no excuse to not be active. Find out what your exercise plan looks like.

When the elder statesman of the Banyule Bike Users Group regularly passes others riding uphill and you know he turned 92 last November, others have to say, “That’s one very fit nonagenarian!” And, he is such a nice bloke too.

Kelvin joined the Banyule Bicycle Users Group (BUG) about five years ago, having seen a Seniors Week promotion of the Heidelberg based bike riding group. Since then he has regularly ridden with the clubs subgroup, aptly called the Latte Group. The group rides every Tuesday and Friday starting in Heidelberg and covering destinations around the metropolitan area, mainly on bike tracks and back streets. Rides are between 25 and 75 kms long, and always include one or more coffee stops en route. Kelvin very much enjoys the rides, but also the social contact that the group affords. Most other riders are retirees in their 60s and 70s, and a few in their 80s, but Kelvin is clearly the ‘elder statesman’ and an inspiration to all.

Kelvin has had a long interest in bikes and cycling since his younger years when he saved for his first bike by doing a paper delivery. He attributes much of his wellbeing and fitness to a number of things; namely maintaining a positive

attitude to fitness and life, a good diet devoid of alcohol, and being a non-smoker. Kelvin has enjoyed outdoor pursuits most of his life through scouting, bush walking and of course, bike riding.

Kelvin’s well ridden current bike is a Jamis road bike with butterfly handle bars so that he can lean forward on the hills, and he has a small rear view mirror on the right side. Sometimes after a long ride he finds it a little difficult to lift his leg over the bar when dismounting. As a result Kelvin has acquired a step-through frame e-bike which he occasionally rides on BUG rides, but still prefers his lighter more responsive road bike for these rides.

Kelvin’s wife is now in aged care in Alphington and he visits her every day riding 5 kms each way when he chooses the e-bike. If the weather is grim, he will take his car for a spin. Kelvin is an inspiration to the ‘younger’ Banyule Bug members, and it is hoped by all that they will be riding with him for many years to come.

Banyule BUG welcomes adult riders of all ages and abilities. Visit our website banyulebug.org.au or email us at [email protected]

Out and aboutOut and about LGBTI Community Visiting Program

Out and About is a peer service connecting older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) people across Victoria to reduce social isolation.

You can refer yourself or someone else to the free service. Just fill in the online referral form at switchboard.org.au/out-about or phone 9663 2474.

Eligible older LGBTI people can access the service, whether or not you are open about your LGBTI status. Out and About staff and volunteers respect the privacy of clients and are very careful to never disclose a service user’s LGBTI status.

Out and About especially welcomes referrals from people who live in residential aged care, access aged care services, are living with a disability including dementia, live rurally or regionally, are transgender or gender diverse, intersex, bisexual, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, multicultural, veterans, women or people living with HIV.

Interested in hearing about a project for older LGBTI people?

We are forming a 50+ LGBTI group and would like to create a contact list of people who are interested in receiving updates and opportunities.

Health and wellbeingHealth Risks and hazards from bushfire smokeBushfire smoke is a mixture of airborne particles, gases and water vapour, and can affect the health of anyone who is exposed to it. Young children, the elderly, people with heart or lung conditions and pregnant women can be sensitive to smoke exposure. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria monitors air quality, carbon monoxide and other particulate matter across Victoria.

Exposure to airborne particles in smoke may cause:

• coughing

• shortness of breath

• respiratory irritation

Anyone experiencing symptoms of exposure to bushfire smoke such as wheezing, chest tightness or difficulty breathing should seek urgent medical attention. Conditions such as asthma, heart or lung conditions may be worsened by exposure.

The most effective way to control the risk of exposure to smoke is to avoid being outdoors on days where the air quality rating is poor, very poor or hazardous. People who are particularly at risk should take extra care when air quality is poor and activate their medical plan or contact their doctor to discuss putting a plan in place.
