Bonus commissionCreative Holidays is today

promoting its 15% commission on all land plus a bonus 2% commission on all air sold throughout Apr (TD yesterday) with a special cover page of TD.

MD James Gaskell said the offer is designed to help travel agents “counter this predicted slow booking month.”

“We anticipate this to be very popular with agents enabling them to earn more on every booking,” Gaskell added.

Pinpoint TravelPay launchPinPoint Travel last night

officially launched a new “TravelPay” service which allows travellers to pay for their trips in interest-free instalments.

The innovation can be used to pay for any travel product - not just the Pinpoint range - with the company’s founder Kim Harding saying it has key benefits for travel agents and their clients.

“Customers can lock in the best price and exchange rate and access earlybird offers, then pay for it over the next few months interest free,” she said.

Travel agents can use TravelPay as a tool to get clients to commit, as well as potentially upsell them to a more expensive package via the simple finance option.

TravelPay is only available through travel agents and after

arranging a booking, passengers pay it off over three or five monthly instalments on their own credit or debit card.

Apart from an establishment fee of $100 and standard card processing fees of 2.5% there is no extra cost, and after the final instalment has been paid TravelPay notifies the travel agent who can then release the trip documentation.

The launch was at a function to celebrate Pinpoint’s 20th anniversary this year - more from the event on page five.

ALL YEAR

France WWI memorial FranCe will take centre stage

for the commemoration of the First World War in Jun.

At the Rendez-vous en France trade expo (see pg 4) in Clermont-Ferrand today, officials said the commemoration will be a strategic opportunity to boost tourist arrivals into the country.

A series of main events will take place across France all year long and preparations are in place for easy access to sites in order to facilitate easy mobility for visitors between one site and another.

More than 1,000 projects in France have been awarded official Centenary accreditation and there will be special homage to the ANZACS at the battlefields and in the village of Villers-Bretonneux, among others.

“Some regions expect up to 300,000 Australians to visit the Somme over the next four years,” head of Atout France in Australia Patrick Benhamou told TD.

MEANWHILE, the New Zealand Govt has notified Kiwi applicants if they have been offered a space at the Gallipoli Dawn Service for the 2015 Anzac Day commemoration.

Australians will find out shortly.

on the new Silver Discoverer departed Broome this morning, with the vessel sailing full on its first Kimberley program.

The cruise follows a christening ceremony in Singapore last week (TD Cruise Update Thu) with Silversea gm Karen Christensen telling Travel Daily there has been an exceptional response to the itineraries, with most passengers being Australian.

After the Kimberley season of four voyages, Discoverer continues its first year with cruises in the Russian Far East, Melanesia, Micronesia, NZ and the Antarctic.

Creative Hols adds brandsCreative Holidays will expand

to incorporate the Creative Cruising and Coral Seas product ranges in a realignment of the brands which formerly operated under the Adventure World banner (TD breaking news).

Creative’s recently appointed md James Gaskell revealed that the move was part of a major “portfolio expansion plan” by the wholesaler, with Creative Holidays set to offer more than 70,000 products via a “market-leading agent website launching later this year”.

The brand changes follow last year’s Adventure World acquisition from NRMA by The Travel Corporation (TD 03 Oct), which included several other operations the motoring organisation had purchased over the years including Value Tours, Coral Seas and Creative Cruising.

Travel Corporation ceo John Weeks said moving the Coral Seas and Creative Cruising brands into Creative Holidays would “allow us to take full advantage of the strong reputation and well developed product of both brands.

“It is in line with the strategic direction of Creative Holidays and Adventure World and provides both brands opportunities for growth,” Weeks said.

Coral Seas will expand Creative’s range of Pacific destinations to include Tonga, Niue, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, while the Creative Cruising addition adds significant cruise product and will “simplify cruise/FIT combinations for agents”.

Adventure World md Fiona Hunt said that the change would enable the business to enhance its range of unique and tailored product in India, Africa, Latin America, Canada, USA and Asia as well as allowing for “an immediate launch of the Adventure World South Pacific and Europe program”.

‘Risks’ for NZ if alliance deniedtHe withdrawal of Jetstar’s

Singapore-Auckland service from 21 Jul (TD 20 Mar) has prompted Tourism New Zealand to again pronounce its support for the planned Air New Zealand venture with Singapore Airlines.

Last month, Travel Daily revealed Tourism New Zealand had vowed support for the pact between the Star Alliance carriers (TD 13 Mar), predicting the tie-up may see Jetstar axe its flights from New Zealand to Singapore.

A re-submitted application

from TNZ business planning and evaluation manager Graeme Howard emphasises the importance of a green light from the NZ Ministry of Transport for the SQ/NZ proposed agreement.

“While the Jetstar announcement will result in Air NZ/SIA with a monopoly on the Auckland/Singapore route (if the alliance is approved), the overall projected capacity increase resulting from the alliance will have a significant benefit to NZ,” Howard said.

“Conversely, if the alliance is not approved, New Zealand risks being significantly underserved in terms of direct access to the important and growing ASEAN region,” he added.

Howard also noted that Garuda Indonesia had since confirmed it does not intend on launching an Indonesia/Auckland service “in the near term,” in further support for the SQ/Air NZ alliance.

SiLverSea Cruises has enjoyed some serendipity with the departure this morning of its inaugural Silver Discoverer voyage from Broome (see p2).

GM Karen Christensen said it’s an absolute coincidence that the 02 Apr departure comes twenty years to the day after the inaugural voyage of the cruise line’s classic Silver Cloud.

Atout go to the flicksatout France will stage two

movie nights for travel agents in the coming months after surveys show that 50% of foreigners arriving in France say they have been influenced by a movie in choosing France as a destination.

Atout France Director for Australia Patrick Benhamou says the first movie to be screened will be the controversial film Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman, featuring the family reigning in the principality.

This screening will take place on 26 May.

Benhamou said a second film night will take place on 08 Sep & will feature the new Woody Allen movie, Magic in the Moonlight which focuses on the Roaring 1920s in the French Riviera.

“We’ll be the first to show that film to agents before its public release,” Benhamou added.

Details on how travel agents can attend will be released shortly.

Aus arrivals to France growingauStraLia has

moved up the ladder for tourist arrivals into France, now ranking 9th among 30 countries where Atout France is promoting.

Atout France Director for Australia, Patrick Benhamou told Travel Daily that Australia was also No 9 in terms of marketing priorities, and No 9 in terms of revenue generated by Aussie tourists in France.

“In 2012, Australians generated a whopping €900m in expenditure which places them between the USA, and China at number 10”.

He added while it is good news, like a lot of countries, national tourist office budgets are getting lower due to cutbacks.

“But I’m encouraged by our

President Hollande who for the first time in the history of France, mentioned tourism as the sector that brings 1% growth to our economy,” Benhamou said.

He said tourism is ‘a national cause’ - never before have I heard that from a French President.

Benhamou is pictured above left with Lila Boyer, France at Leisure, Brisbane and Martyn Paterson from Outdoor Travel, Victoria.

Burma accom concerntraveL Indochina says Burma’s

accommodation boom is coming at the price of quality and safety.

Product manager for China & Burma Jackie Firmstone said the tour operator welcomed the level of growth in new properties in Burma to meet tourism demand.

But Firmstone warned “it is vitally important to continue to make sure that the new stock meets safety and service criteria, while simultaneously ensuring tourism as a whole remains sustainable.”

She said Travel Indochina was aware of 40+ new hotels, lodges, resorts and guest-houses under development it was considering adding to its portfolio, but on closer inspection found many did not “meet the grade.”

“We’ll continue to remain equally selective in the future.”

Explore NZ rejiggedtouriSm New Zealand has

announced it is revamping its travel agent Explore New Zealand program to a fully automated platform, making it easier to use and more streamlined for sellers.

Explore New Zealand provides the trade with access to over 700 deals with accommodation providers, attractions & activities.

The overhaul sees changes to the criteria & application process required to be eligible, including a requirement that frontline New Zealand sellers successfully complete 10 of TNZ’s online travel modules prior to registering.

“We’re confident that by completing the online training modules before visiting NZ, travel sellers will improve their ability to sell New Zealand as a destination,” Tourism NZ gm Australia Tony Saunders said.

Pinpoint celebrates 20 years

PinPoint Travel last night hosted key supplier and travel agent partners at a festive celebration to commemorate 20 years in business.

Founder Kim Harding, pictured above cutting the cake with the firm’s gm sales Janette Davie, said the company was strongly committed to distribution via the travel agency network.

“Over the last 20 years we have heavily invested in wholesale when others have walked away.

“We believe in travel agents, who will always be a major driver of international travel,” she said.

Travel agents provide peace of mind, save passengers money, ensure hotels booked are in good locations and help “avoid tedious internet searches,” Harding added.

She said Pinpoint aimed to provide great products and excellent service for the industry and “reward and recognise travel agents for their efforts”.

Last night’s event saw the launch of Pinpoint’s new TravelPay product (see p1), while

marketing director Vanessa Ligovich highlighted the group’s recent brand refresh and new trade website as well as its ‘Pinpoints’ loyalty program.

She also announced the launch of ‘The Collection’, an “exciting new initiative in the luxury space.

“There is huge growth in the luxury market - around 48% of the affluent market take four holidays a year, and half of this group will spend up to $30,000 on their holiday,” she said.

The Collection features more than 230 modern, luxurious and boutique properties to help agents capitalise on this demand.

VA Business making Qld inroadsBuSineSS travellers living in

Queensland are warming to Virgin Australia’s Business class offerings over Qantas, according to the latest Roy Morgan Research Air Travel Survey results.

The poll, covering the full year period to the end of Feb 2014, showed Qantas is barely hanging on to the majority of business travellers in the Qld market, with 63% considering VA or Virgin Australia Regional Airlines and 74% still keen on the flag carrier.

Nationally, Qantas is still a firm favourite, with 77% likely to select Qantas or QantasLink for their next business trip over Virgin Australia on 54%.

It marks a narrowing of the gap to 11 percentage points between the two in Qld, as opposed to the 23% gap at a national level.

Virgin Australia still has a little bit of work to do in NSW, Vic and WA, with the narrowest margin

among the three states at 24% in Vic, while QF holds a 35% lead over VA in Western Australia.

“Although Qantas is still dominant in the domestic business market, Virgin Australia is well considered, especially by Queensland business travellers,” Roy Morgan international director of tourism Jane Ianniello said.

MEANWHILE, a Roy Morgan study into inflight magazines has revealed their popularity last year, with 841,000 Australians reading at least one per month on average, up 100,000 from 2012.

Popularity of Qantas’ The Australian Way title climbed to 496,000 monthly readers in the year to Dec 2013, up 60,000, while VA’s Voyeur sits at 257,000, having grown by 4% year-on-year.

Jetstar’s inflight mag recorded the highest annual growth rate, with readership up 18% & closing fast on the Virgin Australia title.

Marketing a successtouriSm New Zealand says it

is seeing a significant impact on visitor arrival numbers outside of economic factors as a direct result of tourism marketing efforts.

CEO Kevin Bowler said the 6% full year growth figure recorded and 7.3% for the year to Feb 2014 was a joint accomplishment of both TNZ and industry partners.

He attributed strong growth from long-haul western markets as largely driven by the success of The Hobbit, with 14% of arrivals citing the movie franchise as a major reason for their visit.

“A decade ago in 2004, following the release of the final film in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, that figure was only six per cent”.

Today’s issue of TD is coming to you courtesy of The Travel Corporation, which is hosting

100 Aussie travel agents on the American explorer Mega Famil.

The Trafalgar group travelled north from Los Angeles to Monterey where they enjoyed a Be My Guest experience at Happy Girl Kitchen, an organic sustainable farm-to-table eatery with all items sourced the same day from local farms.

They’ve also taken in the Napa Valley and the hippie atmosphere of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury precinct.

The group now heads for Las Vegas via Santa Barbara.

Trafalgar’s Mega US grouptraveL agents with Trafalgar on the Travel Corporation Mega Famil

have enjoyed a fabulous trip including Trafalgar signature inclusions such as Hidden Treasures, Highlight Dinners, Be My Guest Experiences, Local Specialties and Edible Excursions.

A highlight of the trip was when they rolled their sleeves up for a hands-on cooking lesson at Ramekins Cooking School in the Napa Valley - after bottling their own personal wine blends at Ravenswood Winery.

In San Francisco the itinerary included a personalised tour of the Haight Ashbury district, where the agents learned all about Flower Power and the wild times of the sixties from two local legends, Izu and Sam, who had both lived in the area along with Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead during the “summer of love” and appear to have never left.

The trip continued to Santa Barbara - via Walmart of course for some retail therapy - where they

checked into the Fess Parker beachside hotel and were welcomed to Stella Mare’s Bistro - popular with celebrities such as Oprah, Ellen De Generes and Portia De Rossi for a special Be My Guest experience - lots more pics online at facebook.com/traveldaily.

aBove: Justine Demarchi from Jetset Travel Port Augusta; Kieran Mackenzie, Travelscene Cessnock; and Ashlee Harriss, Flight Centre Busselton admire a spectacular view of Santa Barbara.

BeLoW: Kimberley Reyes enjoyes a “Trafalgar Special” cocktail made by Stella Mare’s gm Larry Nobles.

aBove: Joanna Tink from Flight Centre Rouse Hill; Jessica Yazbeck, Flight Centre Bankstown; and Leya Pearce, Trafalgar Travel Sales Manager sample some tasty treats during an Edible Excursion through Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Markets in San Francisco.

LeFt: Kimberley Reyes of Flight Centre Docklands and Holly Whiting from Flight Centre Sutherland enjoy a Highlight Dinner.

rigHt: More seasoning? Shea Fagan from Helloworld Nerang picks up some culinary tips from Executive Chef Roth at Stella Mare’s Bistro.

rigHt: Aimee Cruickshank from Trafalgar savours some yummy cheese with Alana Granci of Flight Centre Armadale.
