Given how quickly everything is changing, that is a lot of pressure on us as educators. Our schools are great, but they are going to need to be even better to serve young people by preparing them for that world. We need to think carefully about how we attract the best candidates into teaching and develop them to be excellent teachers. We need to consider what we teach and how we teach to ensure every child makes expected progress in every classroom and during every year at school. And we need to ensure that each child in our schools is cared for and supported. These are formidable challenges. It is what we all want – our schools providing a foundation for a purposeful, rewarding and fulfilling life for each child in our care. We will do this by committing to the improvement of every child, every teacher, every leader and every school.

SCHOOL AND STUDENT SECURITY Our new electronic gate system is finally fully operational. Last week’s serious incident at Bonnyrigg H.S. served to highlight the importance of ensuring that in case of an emergency in the community that we are able to respond and secure the school accordingly. I extend my respect to all the staff, students and community of Bonnyrigg H.S. for their tremendous response that ensured this incident was dealt with appropriately and sensitively. On that note I would like to bring to your attention that the school pedestrian gate will NOT be opening until 8:30am which is the official school start time. Please do not buzz the intercom to be let in before this time unless there is a specific reason to do so eg. a prescheduled meeting. I also ask once again for your cooperation and understanding in not sending your children to school prior to this time. The pedestrian gate will open again at 2:45pm to allow parents in to collect their children. This includes our preschool parents who I ask respectfully to not arrive prior to 2:45pm to wait for their children. This still allows plenty of time for parents of preschool students to collect their older children from the assembly area. A reminder of these times will be included each fortnight in the newsletter.

BEST START The Best Start initiative provides support to our youngest students with literacy and numeracy during the first year of school. This week all our Kindergarten students took part in this. State wide assessment that helps teachers identify the literacy and numeracy skills of each student at the beginning of Kindergarten. Children start school with a range of early literacy knowledge, skills and understandings. Best Start Kindergarten Assessment: Literacy involves teachers finding out about each student’s early literacy knowledge, skills and understandings by using a series of specially designed assessment tasks. The assessment, which will be conducted in English, will help teachers develop effective learning programs that build upon what students know and can do when they start Kindergarten.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL The swimming carnival which was scheduled for this week has been cancelled for the whole school due to a number of risk factors. These include the high number of non-swimmers across the school, the extreme weather conditions and the time constraints for compliance with the new management system. A note will be sent home with eligible students inviting them to participate at a carnival with another local school. This would be for the purpose of registering an official time for Zone. Please note that should you accept this invitation it will be the responsibility of parents to take them to this carnival.

UPDATED INFORMATION On many occasions we try to contact parents/carers due to a child being sick or injured and parents have not been able to be contacted on the numbers provided. This causes much distress to the children. If you have changed your mobile or moved please inform the office.

NRL VISIT This Thursday 9th February the NRL Parramatta Eels will be visiting our school to promote the sport to our children. They will be bringing some players and have some giveaways to give the students. They have given us the heads up that photos may be taken! If you do not wish your child to be photographed please ensure that the correct permissions are updated
