Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are:

• 13 times more likely to die in accidents overall.

• 21 times more likely to die as pedestrians on the roads.

• 38 times as likely to die in a house fire.

In A&E visits and emergency admissions, childhood accidents cost the NHS over £375m per year. Subsequent treatment, which can last a lifetime costs £millions more.

“An absolutely great experience for all children (and staff). Very well organised and each group were extremely informative. Thank you!” St John’s Primary School

Introduction

Dear Reader,

Crucial Crew is a multi-agency safety event aimed at Year 6 primary school children (10 to 11 year olds). It has been designed to provide children with life skills that will, in the future, help to keep themselves and others safe.

It is generally accepted that children start to become more independent at this age and are often expected to cope increasingly on their own, dealing with changes in their lives - such as a move to secondary school.

The aim of the Crucial Crew event is to raise each participant’s awareness of potential threats and dangers, in a fun and interactive way.

This evaluation report relates to the Bolton Crucial Crew child safety event that ran from Monday 11th January to Friday 22nd January 2016. Over this period, 1,600 children attended.

The event was co-ordinated by Child Safety Media and schools across central Bolton were invited to attend.

The Army Reserve Centre hosted the event and provided a safe learning environment. The presentations took place in areas that were clearly segregated, allowing the children to concentrate and absorb the instructions and advice that is given to them.

The agencies continually assess their presentations and question whether their messages need to change, in order to reflect current dangers to children. We know that children learn by ‘doing’ rather than being ‘told’, so all agencies were encouraged to make their presentations as interactive as possible.

They learn by experience to:

• React correctly to dangerous and threatening situations.

• Avoid becoming a victim of an accident or crime.

• Understand the role that the emergency and support services play, how and when to contact them.

• Gain life skills that will help them, and others, to be safe.

• Be aware of the consequences of their own actions and how they may impact on others.

“Lots of new, important information given to the children. Very engaging and enjoyable. Invaluable! Thank you!” Masefield Primary School

Many schools embrace Crucial Crew and see it as an integral part of PSHE. In some instances, they create safety posters and collages for their corridors, re-enact what they have learned in school assemblies and teach their families about safety and accident prevention at home.

The event would not have happened without the support of the team at the Army Reserve Centre once again, and the agency staff who have made this event so successful. Visiting teachers and guests agree that Crucial Crew is essential and none of them would want the children in their schools to miss it, which is testament in itself to its value.

We look forward to seeing you all again in January 2017.

Best wishes,

Jacqui HoggEvent Co-ordinatorChild Safety Media

“Excellent! Fast paced to keep children engaged, lots of information at an appropriate level. Thank you once again.” Beaumont Primary School

Do you remember getting safety tips from the Crucial Crew? Well they’re still going strong More than 1,500 youngsters will be given “crucial” lessons in how to stay safe over the next 10 days.

For the Crucial Crew — police, Bolton Lads and Girls Club, a road safety team and Bolton Wanderers FC —will reunite to help primary school pupils become streetwise.

The “hands-on” event is designed to teach young people about important issues that are often overlooked in the curriculum, including anti-social behaviour, personal safety and road safety.

Pupils are given the unique opportunity to learn valuable skills from the professionals, through practical demonstrations and discussions in real-life situations — all within a safe environment.

Child Safety Media’s event coordinator, Jacqui Hogg said: “It’s essential that young people learn about safety by experiencing risk in controlled conditions.

“By taking part in the Crucial Crew workshops, pupils were able to explore difficult topics in a fun and interactive environment, with real safety professionals.

“This makes the lessons much more real and therefore, more likely to make a difference.”

As part of the event, Bolton Lads and Girls Club has been delivering sessions on Internet safety and cyber bullying.

Claire Stabler, the Clubs Mentoring Manager, said: “keeping young people safe is a priority for us at the Club, we run many educational sessions on issues and topics such as internet safety within the youth club so we are delighted to be supporting this event. It is a great opportunity for us to reach more young people across the town to ensure they are as safe as possible on and offline.”
