As you can see by the cover of this Connection magazine, this issue focuses on Connecting Members. Since the Boca Chamber was established in 1952 we have been creating connections. By connecting your business to the

Boca Chamber, you immediately multiply your connections to your target audience and build long-term relationships to grow your business.

On page 5 you will read about the signature event for the Boca Chamber Festival Days, Wine & All That Jazz. Boca Chamber Festival Days, held during the month of August, is a series of events where non-profit and for profit companies connect to Enhance our Community.

Starting in September our Chamber will be connecting you to a series of business development sessions lead by Annette Gray, President/CEO, Global Business Development Center. This series, titled IMPACT, provides the tools you need to effectively connect your business with your market. Annette’s article, on page 7, provides some great tips for networking effectively.

Leadership Boca 2013, which was successfully completed in June, connects business leaders with the issues that affect our community and businesses. These business leaders also form strong connections with each other which builds a strong network of business leaders in our community. This enables them to contribute their resources to enhancing South Palm Beach County.

The Boca Chamber committees represent a broad cross section of the industries and professional leadership of Boca Raton. These committees work constantly for you to ensure you can connect with community leaders and elected officials, stay informed of advances in the healthcare industry, learn about technologies that will help your business succeed, and bring year-round tourism to the greater Boca Raton area. You can learn more about our committees on pages 14 and 15. If you are interested in hearing more about them, please contact Sarah Pearson at [email protected].

Business is about connecting. Whether it’s to other businesses, community leaders that influence the way you work, or technologies that will improve your business and your reach, the Boca Chamber has you covered!

To your success,

By Troy m . mclellancce, fccP

Networking effectively is a great way to build your business. By taking the time to meet with other business people and discovering Synergies you can

develop relationships that will provide great rewards for you in the future. Undoubtedly, networking is one of the proven methods for growing a business. Networking is not now, nor never has been, a quantifiable process. Although there are academics who study social networks who are mathematicians, behaviorists and even physicists, the reality is that day to day treatment of others, support and exchanges we call networking is an ART... the art of communication. Below are a few tips for preparing for and making your networking activities meaningful.DefineyourpurposeforattendingmeetingsBefore going to a meeting, decide the goal you have for attending. Is it to gain new leads, develop relationships with other people at the meeting, or present a new product or service? Having a purpose in mind will help you be effective in your efforts.Beontimeformeetings, anddon’tleaveearlyWhen you go to a meeting, respect the other attendees and the host. If you arrive late, you disrupt the flow of the meeting. If you leave early, people who have heard your presentation will not be able to find you to ask questions or offer assistance.WearyournametagontherightBy placing your name tag on the right, people you shake hands with will easily be able to see it, making it more likely that they will remember you later on.HaveaneffectivehandshakeYour handshake is the first impression that many people will have of you when you meet them. Your handshake should be firm, but not bone-crushing. Nor should your hand flop around like a limp fish. Practice your handshake with a partner until you have it down right.SpeakClearlyandConciselyWhen you have your opportunity to speak at a meeting, make sure that everyone can understand what you are saying, and that you get your message across. If you are given a microphone, make sure to use it so people on the far side of the room can hear your message. Respect the other people in the room by limiting your speech to the allotted time.MakeeyecontactAs you give your introduction to the group, look around the room and try to catch the eyes of those listening to you. Don’t just stare at an empty wall, or at one person. Make each person in the room feel like you are addressing them personally.

Work the room with small talk first; don’tstay in one place too long and plan yourconversationgenerators.Plan how you are going to meet and engage people at the event. Rather than jumping into conversations with a sales pitch, think of a few pieces of small talk that you can use to get started. (Topics like the weather and sports results are OK, while politics and religion are probably not). Also, have some conversation starters that reflect your purpose for attending the meeting. Finally, don’t take up all your time talking to one person. Start a conversation, and if there is mutual interest, plan on coffee or lunch to get into depth. Your goal should be to meet several people.BuildrelationshipsofsupportandrespectThink of networking as a long-term process, where you develop a list of contacts that you can refer business to, and who can refer business to you. The best way to accomplish this is to create lasting relationships.Be a resource to others and genuinely careaboutpeoplePeople you meet will be much more likely to provide you with referrals if they know that you care about them and their business. After all, they will be referring their clients and friends, and don’t want to be embarrassed by a bad experience.Behelpful, andgotheextramileWhile you’re building your reputation and expanding your referral base, nothing will get you further faster than offering a helping hand that over-delivers on expectations. In today’s active and busy environment the question becomes what does one do after mastering the tips above. The answer is not a simple one; but, technology can be used quickly and effortlessly to convert those business cards into a system that can be used to begin a conversation.NetworkingdoesnotmeanglobalemailingBy the end of the event, you will probably have obtained several business cards. Don’t go back to your office and send an email to everybody reminding them that you attended the meeting and what you have to offer. That is spam, and a sure way NOT to get business. Instead, try some of the current ways of sharing information via your smart phone. It is easy, efficient, and reduces the clutter of business cards on your desk.

Bump [iOS, Android] A great way to connect in business environments, Bump acts the same way a paper business card does: it stores and exchanges contact information when tapped against another Bump-enabled

device. However, this can at times be a limitation because contacts must be Bump users. https://bu.mp/

WorldCard Mobile [iOS, Android, Windows Mobile] Strictly a business card reader and scanner, WorldCard Mobile scans paper business cards and stores the information in a digital format. This app can also be linked to iCloud and Dropbox accounts

for universal access. http://worldcard.penpowerinc.com/product.asp?sn=158

CardFlick [iOS, Android]Perhaps one of the simplest card reading apps out there, CardFlick users merely “flick” their business cards to each other. A highlight of this app is that for contacts who are not CardFlick users, business cards can be emailed. http://cardflick.co/

CardMunch [iOS]An innovative concept from LinkedIn, this app gathers information after scanning paper business cards and then transfers it into LinkedIn user profiles. One of its drawbacks however, is that it is

only available for iPhone users. http://www.cardmunch.com/

CamCard [iOS, Android]Fast, efficient, and easy to use, this app scans entire sets of business cards that are then cropped to form individual cards. Contact information can also be converted into QR codes. https://www.camcard.com/

Protecting Business

Government Affairs Update

By placing the long-term interests of Florida over short-term fixes, elected leaders and the business community continue working

together to help ensure Florida’s economy is coming back strong. Leading by example during the 2013 Legislative Session, lawmakers helped make Florida more competitive by passing more than 25 business-backed bills. Florida continues to adopt policies that will help small businesses and families by standing up for free enterprise and growing the private sector.

The following key state initiatives endorsed by the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors bills passed are:

• Protection From Mandated Leave – Protecting Florida businesses and jobs from union mandates by creating a single statewide leave standard.

• Protecting Growth Management – Clarification that an initiative or referendum process in regard to any local comprehensive plan amendment or map amendment is prohibited.

• Supporting a Change in Worker’s Compensation Reimbursement – Revises requirements for determining amount of reimbursement for repackaged or relabeled prescription medication to lower business insurance cost.

Reinstating the 2012-2013 reduction of $300 million in the 2013-2014 higher education budget was also a priority for the Boca Chamber. The FY2013-14 Budget allocates approximately $4 billion for the State University System and fully restores the $300 million that was removed from last year’s budget. This represents over a $24 million restoration to FAU.

The 2013 Florida Legislative Session was a win for job creation. There were 27 business backed bills passed by the legislature that moves the dashboard in the positive direction for business.

Enhancing Community

Leadership Boca 2013 Participants Enhance Our Community

LeadershipBoca is an annual program developed by the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce for top executives and business leaders to gain in depth knowledge about South

Palm Beach County. Participants apply for this exclusive program, which is only offered once a year. This year, the 40 participants in the Leadership Boca class of 2013 represented small business owners and corporate executives in the areas of law, banking, education, health care and more.

Throughout the program, participants had the

opportunity to interact with leaders of our business community. The class visited the corporate headquarters of ADT, Office Depot, NCCI, and 3Cinteractive where participants were able to speak directly with top executives about the business and their commitment to Palm Beach County. In addition, participants met and spoke with leaders such as executive directors of non-profit organizations, local schools and government officials.

During the program participants were able to network with one another and build relationships that will be beneficial both personally and professionally for years to come. The professional bonds that were created go beyond the traditional business card exchange which creates a meaningful network of business leaders in the community, thus enhancing South Palm Beach County.

The class of 2013 graduated in June after completing nine full days of the program, in addition to a unique

program called SIMSOC, which takes participants through a simulated society experience.
