August 12, 2013 Shining Star Recognition Hornung Elementary – Maureen Strachan, 4th grader teacher was nominated to receive “Shining Star recognition for obtaining a $3,700 grant from Fuel Up to Play 60 (United Dairy Council) to initiate a program for students. Her intent was to provide teacher opportunities to help students move more throughout the day and give them material to educate them on healthy options for snacks and lunches. She utilized the money to purchase playground equipment, fund an oatmeal breakfast after our Turkey Run, Fruits and Vegetables to try, yogurt parfaits, clean hot dogs (which are organic, nitrate free hot dogs), Motor Mom/VMI equipment and field day activities. She arranged for the United Dairy Council and Simply Fresh market to come educate the children about healthy options and how fruits, vegetables and dairy help our brains. Both of these provided educational programming for free on that day. For reading month we had a theme “Book and a Bowl” and they provided incentives for the kids reading. After obtaining the grant, she recruited Kara Fribley, Sandy Cavallaro and Tamara Rollins to help her in planning and implementation of various activities.
