Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

Dear Disciples of Prince of Peace,

When you feel more like taking a nap then cranking it out on the computer, maybe you should!

There is a season for… well...summertime fun, rest, changes in schedules, nothing-ness…

For a week in July, I was at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with Janet, our two daughters and spouses, and their dogs, doing nothing but sunbathing, swimming, reading, playing games, watching movies and eating too much. We had not all been together for over a year. It was fun and life-giving.

How are you enjoying the summer, the moment, the lessening of pandemic precautions?

Before we know it, we will be drowning in fall activities. Even if you are an avid planner and this is already true for you, please take a break.

The reality is that many of us are pooped out because we have not had enough, if any, time off.

Setting boundaries is at the heart of a healthy lifestyle and lifegiving relationships.

Even Jesus went away… often, but not always alone.

Enough said.

Peace,

Pastor Paul Lutz

SUMMER READING AND DISCUSSION

There once was a man, who was raising his young son. The mother had passed away in childbirth and he was teaching his son all that he knew. This son, grew up and in time wanted to go to a nearby village and find himself a companion. Many months passed and the young man returned to his home, and with him he had a woman, his wife. They lived in the home of his father. Shortly after, they had a son. And the father, now a grandfather, began teaching this young boy all that he knew: how to respect the forest, the animals and life. The mother, tiring of sharing her home with the old man, told her husband that she wanted the old man out. The father spoke “I cannot; this is his home and he built it for us.” She spoke, “If you do not make him leave then I will take our son and I will leave.” The father agreed and spoke to his son. “My son, tomorrow I want you to take Grandpa out and leave him. Give him this blanket.” The young boy cried. “Why do you do this? Grandpa has been teaching me all that I know. Why do I have to do this to him?” The father spoke. “Son, follow the wishes of your father.” So, the next morning, the father went hunting to the North. The son took Grandpa as far as he could walk to the South. That evening the young boy was sitting on the bed crying when his father came In. He saw the blanket on the bed. “Son, I thought I told you to give Grandpa the blanket?” “I gave Grandpa half of the blanket. The other half, I will give to you some day.” The mother and father understood the message. And they went and brought Grandpa back.

Questions to Explore: What’s the value of gratitude? Why does it even matter? Are older people more grateful than younger people? Or is it the reverse? We all know the value of connections, but where did the barriers com from and what can we do to topple them? Have you lived a life that deserves gratitude from others?

ACOLYTE TRAINING Has your child mentioned to you that he/she would like to be an acolyte and light the candles and hand out offering plates and then receive the offering during the worship service? If not, now is the time to ask him/her. This is an excellent way for your child to begin their service to the church. It also helps them concentrate more on the worship service. Their responsibilities are to light the candles, receive the offering, and ring the big outside bell (call to worship). On Saturday, August 28

th at 10:00 a.m., I will be training children

interested in being an acolyte. Training usually takes about an hour. The requirements are that they must be 7 years of age or older, they must be tall enough to light the candles and you, as a parent, must think they can handle the responsibility. If your child is interested (and you haven’t already contacted me), please give me a call at (203) 775-4657 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Since it has been a while since anyone has been an acolyte, I would like to re-train any child that was an acolyte before. They can even help me train the new ones. I schedule them the month before they are to acolyte and I never schedule them without contacting the parents…too many busy schedules. I usually do this by e-mail. Please let me know if your child will be doing the training and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (203) 775-4657 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Marci Sharp

Making simple dresses for girls has taken on a lot energy with our members. It’s exciting to see you smile and promise to help with this program.

We planned to have a meeting on Wednesday, July 28 in the Green Room. The Ambassador, Liz, planned to be there.

There are three separate patterns of dresses. One is a peasant dress which consists of a bodice, sleeves and gathered skirt with two pockets.

Another is a tee shirt dress which starts with a tee shirt and gathered skirt with two pockets. Many go to Africa, Kenya.

Another is a sun dress, no sleeves but a shift with pockets for girls in the Caribbean.

You might ask, “Why the pockets?” We will send each dress with a new pair of cotton panties in one pocket and a toy or doll in the other pocket. Do you like that?

Dresses are made with stable fabric and strong thread to withstand washing and activity. We have been asked about sending used dresses from our own children.

Again, dresses must be made of stable fabric with strong thread. Are there two pockets on these dresses? Many dresses from years ago were not made with strong thread and may deteriorate after many washes. After looking at my thread supply, I have had to discard old thread.

We’ll have more information after our meeting and I’ll be sure to keep you up to date. We plan to have a sew-a-thon at church in August. We will construct kits of supplies to make a dress for members who like to sew at home. We know that there are tasks beside sewing to get this going. One of our members is dying white tee shirts to avoid the see-though effect of white. Fabric will need pressing and pinning and then sewing. Gathering takes time as well as threading elastic through tunnels to form neckline. Pockets need cutting, sewing and turning and then, sewing on to skirt with label. There’s lots to do, and it’s not all sewing. Interfacing is ironed on to tee shirt waistline to fortify knit fabric. If you want to learn to sew, call me. Please join the fun. There’s something for everyone!

Monetary donations are welcomed by the ambassador as she has purchased many items for the dresses.

Mention this to your neighbors and friends. They may want to participate. Bring them along!

We are blessed with hands to do God’s work. Let’s make this an effort that we can all be proud to be a part of it!

Peace,

Nan Carlson
