Is It Really That Time of Year Again?

As surely as summer turns to fall, thoughts at Millersburg Christian Church (and many other

churches, as well) turn to stewardship and budget planning for the next year. While there is a temptation

for us in the church to dread “stewardship season,” it is God’s intent that we count it as a joy, an

opportunity for assessing our blessings, for deepening our commitment to the work of his kingdom.

Jesus reminds us that “where our treasures are, there will our hearts be also.” The things that matter

most to us are the things to which we make the greatest investment of ourselves.

For me the joy of this time of year is that is gives me the opportunity to reflect upon the

investment that the brothers and sisters of Millersburg Christian Church have made throughout the years

and continue to make to this day to the on-going work of God’s kingdom. Truly it is a blessing to be a

part of the body of Christ as manifest in this community of believers. You are an inspiration and I thank

God for you every day and for the opportunity to serve in your midst.

In preparation for Commitment Sunday on October 12th,

let us all prayerfully consider our

continuing investments of time, talent, and financial resources for the on-going work of God’s kingdom

at Millersburg Christian Church as we give God the glory.

John and I will be taking what has become an annual fall pilgrimage for us to Taos, NM, from

September 23-October 8th

. We will also be visiting family in Kansas City and Colorado on the way.

We are most appreciative of this opportunity for rest and renewal in the mountains and high desert of

Colorado and New Mexico in search of quaking aspens and that special sense of spiritual presence we

encounter there. In my absence, Rev. Jim Gearhart, Chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital will preach on

September 28th

and Rev. Ken Watson, retired Disciples minister and on-line professor at Missouri

School of Religion will preach on October 5th

. Both are fine preachers and will provide a welcome

change of pace during our time for stewardship emphasis. Please show them your support.

While we are gone, you may contact me on my cell phone: 573-353-9210; leave a message on

my home phone: 573-556-8280; or e-mail: [email protected]. We look forward to being back in

Millersburg soon.

Love and blessings,

barb and john

2015 Estimate of Giving In grateful response to God’s love and mercy, I/we estimate my/our giving to Millersburg Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ) during 2015 will be*:

$ __________ per week, or

$ __________ per month, or

$ __________ per year, or

a one-time donation of $__________.

Name(s): ______________________________________________________________

Address: _______________________________________________________________

Phone number: __________________ Email: _____________________________

*I understand that if my circumstances change, my level of giving can be changed by

notifying the church treasurer of my new adjusted estimate of giving.

Sewing Machine Project – Some sewing

machine cabinets have been donated to the

Church Rummage Sale by the Sewing Machine

Project in Columbia MO. (The sewing

machines have been rebuilt and shipped to

Honduras, Zambia, or wherever.) The cabinets

would make great TV or plant stands, desks,

etc. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of

the cabinets will be returned to the Sewing

Machine Project.

Esther (Phillippe) Flaigle, Brenda Rose and

Peggy Rose –

Brenda, Peggy and myself had the pleasure

of visiting Esther September 17. Peggy and Esther

have been friends for many, many years! Esther

asked about everyone at church and said to tell

everyone hi!

Sunday, October 26 – “Bring a Friend to

Church”

Please invite your neighbors and other

friends to join us in church on October 26.

After enjoying worship together, we’ll share

a potluck meal. Membership Committee

members will bring meat dishes. Other

members, please bring a large side dish and

dessert.

REGIONAL ASSEMBLY For more information, click on this link: http://www.mid-americadisciples.org/upcoming-events/2014/10/10/regional-assembly.

After struggling for years with expensive

candles that dripped all over everything, the Worship

committee recently switched over to “liquid”

candles. They burn like real candles without the

mess. Brenda took the wooden candleholders

home and refinished them. Don’t they look nice?

The Tuesday, Oct. 14th MCC Cabinet meeting has been changed to Monday, Oct. 13th. Please make note of this important

change. Thank you!

Members and friends of Millersburg Christian Church: below is the 2015 Church Budget Summary,

Those Who Serve in October

During June, July, August and September, members of MCC have gathered items for Women’s Prison Packs as our Festival of Sharing project. These hygiene packs will be given to the women in Vandalia and the Chillicothe facilities. After church on September 21

st, we

packed together all of the items. While packing these items members of the Missions committee discussed Thanksgiving food baskets and adopting a family as part of the SERVE Adopt-A-Family program. Our goal of prison packs was 35 with a pack value of $9.00 each. Therefore, MCC is contributing $315 worth of items towards Festival of Sharing. The Festival is October 18

th in Sedalia.

Woodhaven celebrated their 50th anniversary in

August. MCC sent $100 in honor of the occasion. We received a very nice thank you note from Jaime Freidrichs, CFRE, Director of Development for our donation and for our commitment to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Our gift played an important part of their celebration. Remembering September 11

th, Beth Haas included

in the September 14th Sunday bulletin, information about

three steps to be ready for an emergency. October 12

th is the Callaway County CROP Walk.

Not only food is provided through the money raised, but providing clean water facilities, see and tools to help a family grow their own food to eat and sell. 25% of the money raised stays in the county to support Senior Food Service. Contact Beth Haas for pledge envelopes. Thank you for your kind attention and consideration. If you do an Internet research on Church World Service, you will be amazed at the depth and breadth of their reach all over the world, and right here in Callaway County. It should be noted that all MCC members and community members who took the food handling class that their card will expire October 23, 2014. The health department has been contacted and MCC will host the refresher course to renew authorization October 6

th at 7:00

p.m.!
