CD Review....A DAY IN NASHVILLERobben FordProvogueRobben Fords distinctive guitar toneand style are instantly recognizable asthe sound of the musicians musicianthat he is. While his technicalproficiency is legendary, he alsoknows how to speak directly to his audience at the gutlevel. You feel his music - and it feels great! There aremany moments in this albums free-flowing progressionwhen youll find yourself completely captured under itsspell. Midnight Comes Too Soon, for example, is asuperb piece, a classic display of Fords casual virtuosity. Seven of the nine tracks on the album were written byFord, demonstrating his clever talents as a lyricist andinstrumental composer. Aint Drinkin Beer No More, onthe one hand, will give you a good laugh, while DifferentPeople, is a tale of resignation to the changes in a couples

relationship. The are two blues standards: Asmooth, jazzy remake of Cut You Loose, originally made famous by Junior Wells, and anartful interpretation of Maceo MerriwethersPoor Kelly Blues, interlaced with guitar, trombone, and organ. This recording is a one-day collaboration of sixwell-seasoned musicians captured live at theSound Kitchen studio in Nashville, Tennessee. They groove and jive together perfectly. Despite

the title, this album belongs on the blues shelf nocountry music here. Most surprising is the inclusion of trombonist BarryGreen. Not often heard in your standard blues song, thetrombone licks fit right in and add flavor to the jam. Asin Thump and Bump, a funky instrumental, withAudley Freed on second guitar, Brian Allen on uprightbass, Ricky Peterson on organ and Wes Little on drums, these guys are having a great time together, eachcontributing a solid infrastructure behind the others asthey solo and then join together. ~ DM
