Babes and Rickys Inn DocumentaryB abe's and Ricky's Inn, Award winning blues documentary produced and directed by Ramin Niami, chronicles the last days of one of the most unique and vibrant blues clubs in the world. For over fifty years, Laura Mae "Mama" Gross, an African Americanwoman from Mississippi, brought musicians together, regardless of race, age, or gender, in a place where only the music mattered. The club wasoriginally located on legendary Central Avenue in South Central LA. "Mama" created a place where people such as John Lee Hooker, B.B.King, Albert King and others shared the stage with newcomers in an open, creative, and safe environment. The film shows many musicians at theirhomes and on stage. They share their life experiences, their music andtheir memories of "Mama." She acted as a teacher of the blues who'scharm and forceful character served as the reason why Babe's and Ricky'sInn became one of the most successful clubs in the world. The film features original music by some of the most important bluesartists alive and showcases some of the most unique blues clubs in LA.Stunning guitar performances and personal stories about the hard blueslife come together in a film about what it means to devote your life to music. What is remarkable about Babe's and Ricky's Inn isthat it attracted generations of young people who listened, learned, and enjoyed. • WAITING ONDAYLIGHTBart WalkerRuf Records

Not only did Bart Walkerwin the Gibson BestGuitarist award at the2012 International BluesChallenge in Memphis, his performance drewthe attention of ThomasRuf, of Ruf Records.

Recognizing his talent, Ruf immediately signed Walker to arecording contract, and paired him with producer Jim Gaines tocreate this powerful album, Waiting on Daylight. Hes been playing the guitar since the age of six, mastering itand sharpening his blues skills along the way. Among the artistswho influenced him, he cites SRV, Albert King, Buddy Guy, DuaneAllman, Dereck Trucks and Warren Haynes. Hes also got rootsin bluegrass, rock, country and other styles of music. Despitewinning a scholarship to Vanderbilt University in operatic signing, his love of the blues pulled him down a different path. If youve ever wondered whether a vocalist with classic operatictraining can transition successfully to a blues singer, heres youranswer. Mr. Walkers vocal style is a perfect match for his music. He has an agenda that is clear from his performance on thisalbum. In his own words, the blues is where the heart of allthe music I love lies, and Im hoping Waiting on Daylight canlead people who love rock and songwriting back into the blues. For years its been my dream that I can play a role in making theblues popular again. All eleven songs on the cd are winners, demonstrating Walker'svaried expertise in guitar techniques, from powerful blues-rocksolos to finger picking, slide, and moving rhythms, closing with apleasant surprise a delicate, keyboard/guitar interpretation ofthe Allman Brothers classic Whipping Post. With the airplay that the album is getting, Bart Walker stands agood chance of bringing his dream to reality. ~ DM

CD Reviews.... IF THE RIVER WAS WHISKEYSpin DoctorsRuf RecordsAnother winner from RufRecords. Legendary alt-rock stars, the SpinDoctors, have returned totheir blues roots with thissincere contribution tothe genre. With theirpoetic lyrics andengaging rhythms, theypresent us with a multi-course menu of bluestracks that has clearly been carefully crafted, not just slappedtogether and served up like a fast-food drive-through meal. While pushing the edges of tradition, they maintain a firmstance in the strong blues core of the album. Part of keeping theblues alive is letting it grow out into new corners of the mind, touching on the common experiences that resonate with acontemporary audience, yet maintaining that familiar essencethat rings true as the blues. You can trust this album to rouseyou up and bring you on home. The lyrics are dead honest, ironic and amusing. Take a look atthe video for If the River Was Whiskey on the Ruf Recordswebsite, and youll know what I mean. But beware once youhear that title track, with its Hound Dog Taylor uncercurrent, its not going to leave your head. The Drop echoes the poly-rhythmic roots of the blues in itssyncopated rhythm, behind the lyrics flowing from life-learnedexperience Its not the fall that kills you, but that suddenstop. For myself, Id buy the album just to hear pterodactyl beingrhymed with fractal. Id be delighted to get If its a day goneby, then its three hundred and sixty-five, on top of that, backedup by world-class instrumentals. With Chris Baron, vocals, Erick Schenkman on guitar, AaronComes on drums, and Mark White on bass, there are plenty ofinteresting musical moments to catch your attention and makethis an album worth multiple re-plays. ~ DM

  • BLUSD Member Appreciation Party RecapWe want to thank those of you that came out to partake in our annual FREE member appreciation party. The music was greatand people enjoyed the patio (with heaters) and hanging inside with us. The youth band featuring Leilani Kilgore, TylerRay Davidson (BlueFrog Band), Randon Davitt (Chase Walker Band), Nate Hess and special guest Jesse Stull did a greatjob and had some really powerful and skillful interaction going! Ben Powell never ceases to amaze, not only with his extraordinaryplaying, feel and insights, but his down-to-earth demeanor... a real pleasure! The Bayou Brothers played a rollicking set of Zydecoand Blues with special guests Lance Dieckmann on harp and some vocals and Jessica Evans, Ric Lees daughter, on rubboard. Theirmusic and stage presence was colorful and was really lite up even more with that cool House of Blues stage backdrop. Wrapping upthe day was the groovin, drivin, in-the-pocket band, the 44s featuring Johnny Main, Mike Hightower, JR Lozano, Denis Depoitreand special guest Bubba McCoy blowing some mean harp. These guys were drivin it home and it was a fun cruise! Heres somephoto moments from photographer Jon Naugle. Find more great ones on his Facebook page and also BLUSD Prez Janine Hartyspage.
