2011 Block Island Race Week News FRIDAY JUNE 24, 2011 There was palpable excitement on the docks yesterday morning as word spread among the 134 crews at Block island Race Week XXIV presented by Rolex: We’re going around the island! After long postponements on Monday and Tuesday and no racing at all on Wednesday, and a forecast for 8 to 12 out of the East/Northeast, this was going to be a great day. By 1025, the Race Committee had set what appeared to be a very square starting line for a clockwise circumnavigation of the Bermuda of the North, and signals commenced at 1030. The combined IRC 1 and 2 classes were off first. Jim Swartz’s TP 52 Vesper (Park City, UT), the points leader in IRC 1 going into Thursday, incurred a costly foul at the start. After completing her penalty turns, the striking neon green and black boat headed toward shore for current relief. In the second start, for the Farr One-Design and Swan 42 classes, Preben Os- tberg, Todd Olds and Bud Dailey’s class-leading Farr 40 Tsunami (Annapolis, MD), was over early, as was Paul Hewitt’s Beneteau 36.7 Panacea (Fort Lee, NJ) in IRC4. As the sequence continued, most of the fleet stayed close to shore for the beat to the first mark, “1BI.” At North Light, Vesper rock-hopped alarmingly close to the beach, perhaps for an up-close view of the seals in the surf. Gwen & Austin Fragomen’s J/V 52 Interlodge (Newport, RI) was first around 1BI, with Richard Oland’s Southern Cross 52 Vela Veloce (St. John, NB) nip- ping at her heels. As the only IRC 1 boat to have sailed the outside of the first beat, the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron’s J/V 52 Anema & Core’s (An- napolis) gamble paid off and they rounded 1BI in third. Tripp 41 After Midnight (Stuart, FL) had an outstanding upwind leg, roundedfirst, hoisted their kite and let it all hang out for the reach past North Bluffs.

Charging up the starboard layline, Cool Breeze, John Cooper’s Mills 43(Springfield, MO) tacked right at 1BI, just inside Heidi & Steve Benjamin’sCustom 41 High Noon (Norwalk, CT). During their set, they lost the guy – andmomentum – and were overtaken by High Noon and Lawrence Dickie’s Ker43 Ptarmigan (Greenwich, CT).

The seven 52s were almost evenly spread apart as they passed old Harbor, with Interlodge out front and Sandra & David Askew’s TP 52 Flying Jenny 7(Annapolis) bringing up the rear in hot pursuit of U.S. Naval Academy SailingSquadron’s TP 52 Invictus (Annapolis). In the ensuing jibing duel in the vicin-ity of Southeast Light, Interlodge stretched her lead and headed up the westside. Not far behind, Ptarmigan had assumed the IRC 2 lead and was takingflight. As the breeze freshened, there were some good-sized Atlantic rollerson the east side of the island as the PHRF 3 and 4 boats approached South-east Light.

As with the first beat, right was right for the second – it was essential to getin close to the beach. Winds had increased to 15 knots by th second upwindleg, and a few sails were damaged. Dave Guglielmo enjoyed his day onRalph DiMattia’s N/M 40 Shamrock Sensation (Quincy, MA). “It was a perfectday. We had a great start and we did well,” said Dave, who reported seeinga competitor’s mainsail rent in two. “I didn’t see the name of the boat be-cause I was doing my job,” he explained. “I was a grinder, and I ground andground all day.”

Never relinquishing her lead, Interlodge was first across the finish line toclaim the Rolex Oyster Submariner timepiece. “Good teamwork was thekey,” said crewman Hugh Piggin. “We had the right calls coming from theback of the boat and we didn’t make any mistakes. After the start, we hadbeen swapping positions with the other 52s tacking up the shoreline andthere were a few rocks and depth issues that came into play. Brad Read, ourtactician, did a great job, and Austin did a great job driving the boat.”

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY) had a fantastic day inthe Swan 42 class, finishing 3rd in the 18-boat class. “We’ve been sailingTiburon since last fall, but have not had much opportunity to sail in one-de-sign events,” said Midshipman Derrick Cherico. “This week has been great –we’re starting to mesh as a crew. We finally got a good start and played thecurrent line pretty well on the beat to 1BI, rounded second, and the entirecrew was monumental in keeping their cool and going fast on the reach. Thetop four 42s had a real battle going, and we finished just a boatlength aheadof Better Than... [Gosia Rojek; Brooklyn, NY].”

With an unbroken string of bullets, Ptarmigan is looking good for the US-IRCEast Coast Championship. Vesper has posted a 1-1-1-5 to lead IRC 1 by 2points, while Craig Albrecht’s Farr 395 Avalanche (Sea Cliff, NY) has a 3-pointlead in IRC 3 and Tom Rich’s Peterson 42 Settler (Middletown, RI) has wontwo races to lead IRC 4 by 5 points. In the standings for the J/122 NationalChampionship, Mike Bruno, Tom Boyle and Jim Callahan’s Wings (Irvington,NY) has 13 points, 5 ahead of Andrew Skibo’s Plum Crazy II (Ocean City, NJ).With a scoreline of 2-1-1-2, Bill Sweetser’s Rush (Annapolis) has a 7-pointlead in the J/109 East Coast Championship.

Bruce Stone and Julian Croxall’s Jouster (San Francisco, CA) did a horizonjob in the J/105 class, and they’re trailing Damian Emery’s Eclipse (Shore-ham, NY) who, until yesterday, had an unbroken string of bullets.

The final results in many classes will depend on today’sweather. “We’re going to try to get two races in on Friday, although the weather forecast doesn’t look good,” said On-the-Water Co-Chairman Dick Neville. “We’ll just have to hope forthe best.”

The unofficial WindCheck “Battle Flag of the Week” is awardedto Bill Ketcham’s J/44 Maxine (Greenwich, CT). This artfully ren-dered, billowing beauty drew countless admiring glances. The“Prank of the Week” trophy goes to the crew of the U.S. CoastGuard Academy’s J/44 Glory. After being defeated by the U.S.Naval Academy in an Ultimate Frisbee game on the lawn at TheNarragansett, the cadets retaliated by covering their rivals’Navy 44 Swift’s boom, lifelines and winches with what appearedto be an entire industrial sized roll of Saran Wrap. (See the ReedTrophy story on page 14.)

Looking ahead, 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of thefounding of the Storm Trysail Club, as well as the 25th anniver-sary of Block Island Race Week. With preliminary planning forthis momentous occasion already underway, the Storm TrysailClub hopes to increase participation by Non-Spinnaker classboats…and you can bet that they’ll be pulling out all the stopsto make Block Island Race Week XXV presented by Rolex anevent to remember.

As always, the WindCheck crew has had a terrific time bringingthe Race Week News to you and we hope you’ve enjoyed read-ing it. Best of luck to all crews today…we’ll see you in 2013. A

Charlie Terry has been coming to BlockIsland Race Week – either as competitoror volunteer – for longer than most sailorsat this week’s regatta have been alive.Charlie did his first Race Week on awooden Alberg 35, and this year he drovefrom his home in St. Petersburg Beach, FLto be captain of the Rolex media boat.

Relishing every aspect of Race Week,Charlie regaled journalists with stories from the early years of the event, askingphotographers where they’d like to be for their best shot, and alerting them toimpending action on the racecourse. Delighted with Charlie’s maneuvering intothe best vantage points, freelance shooter Rod Harris exclaimed! “Charlie, Iowe you a million bucks!”

Charlie is a close friend of the Storck family, whose J/80 Rumor (Hunting-ton, NY) is leading in PHRF 4. “Charlie used to sail with us on our Ericson 39Jonrob,” said Colette Storck. “He’s lived on his Hatteras 50 Tonic for the 30years that I’ve known him. He’d bring Tonic up here when we sailed Jonrob atRace Week. We’d tie up together at Payne’s Dock and eat all our meals andsleep aboard Tonic. Two years ago, he brought her to Coral Reef Yacht Club sothat two of my kids and their crews could stay aboard for the Rolex Miami OCR.He’s very capable, and always willing to help anybody…he’s just a great guy.”

It’s possible that Charlie’s love for Race Week runs deeper than anyone else’s.As he says, “They’ll have to put me in an ashbox before I stop coming here!

Tee It Up for the Storm Trysail FoundationGolf TourneyThe Storm Trysail Foundation’s Second Annual Fundraiser Golf Tourney willbe held on Monday, August 29 at the Newport National Golf Club in Middle-town, RI.

“We were looking for a fundraising vehicle, and [Foundation Chairman]John Fisher and I came up with the idea for this event because a number ofpeople in the club also play golf,” said Tournament Chairman Steve Prime ofNewport, RI. “The first one last year was a tremendous success. We had 120people play and we raised money to support our Junior Safety-at-Sea initia-tives and the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, which is held every Octoberat Larchmont Yacht Club in Larchmont, NY. Forty-four college teams fromaround the country are expected to compete, and there’s no entry fee.”

“We hope to have at least 120 players again,” Prime continued. “We’llhave a silent auction, a raffle, a dinner, and a contest to see who can hit a lif-eraft in a pond with a golf ball. Players can come up for a long weekend to

enjoy Newport on Saturday and Sundayand play golf on Monday. It’s going tobe a lot of fun.

Who will win the Reed Trophy?

No battle at Race Week is harder fought than the one for the John AldenReed Perpetual Trophy, which is awarded to the best performance by a serv-ice academy yacht.

The U.S. Naval Academy’s Navy 44 Swift won the Reed Trophy in 2009.This year, the contenders include the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s J/29Renegade (Kings Point, NY; skippered by Midshipman Tim Weber in PHRF 3),the USMMA’s Swan 42 Tiburon (skippered by Midshipman Derrick Cherico),the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Sailing Club’s J/44 Glory (New London, CT;skippered by Jack Neades), and the U.S. Naval Academy’s two IRC 1 52-foot-

ers, the J/V 52 Anema& Core, skippered byEnnio Staffini, and In-victus, a TP 52 skip-pered by Louis Henry.

The serviceacademies have cer-tainly had their handsfull with the top talentthey’ve been pittedagainst. With a verystrong showing in theultra-competitiveSwan 42 class, the

Midshipmen aboard Tiburon clinched a 3rd place podium position in theRound the Island Race. Way to go Tiburon!

With a good showing today in the PHRF 2 class, the sailors aboard theNavy 44, Swift, skippered by Graham Tyson are strong contenders to take the

prize, as they are currently ‘clinging’ to 3rd place. The competition, however,in the IRC 1, Swan 42 and PHRF 3 classes will certainly play a part in the com-mittee’s decision.

As the service academy rivalry is friendly but fierce, it’s nice to see thatthe cadets aboard Glory, even in Ultimate (Frisbee) defeat, still thoughtenough of their comrades to wrap Swift ‘to-go’ and help the Navy achievetheir all-important 4th place PHRF 2 finish in the Round the Island Race yesterday! It’s this chumminess that makes Race Week so special.

Whoever wins the Reed Trophy this year, 2011 will certainly definitely godown as one of the best yet for inter-service academy ribbing, competitionand fun. Congratulations to every service academy sailor – you make us allproud!

New Record for Marion Bermuda RaceBy Colin Thompson, Bermuda Sun

The last thing the crew of Lilla might have expected headinginto this year’s Marion to Bermuda Race Cruising Yacht racewas completing the 645-mile ocean crossing in less than threedays on elapsed time. But that’s exactly what Simon DePietro’s Briand 76 accomplished, shattering the race record bymore than three hours, to claim overall line honours at the firstattempt in the biennial race.

“We weren’t thinking about breaking any records beforewe left. But as we got like two days in we were looking good,”De Pietro told the Bermuda Sun. “The weather forecast waslooking pretty good, we had 25-30 knots winds and we were inthe right place – which is what you need. But regardlesswhether we were here first or not I really like the 68 hours. TheGulf Stream was a little lumpy. It was okay for us because weare reasonably heavy, but I feel for the guys in the 40-footers.”

De Pietro said his yacht could not have arrived in Bermuda in record timehad it not been for the combined efforts of a well-drilled crew that included wifeNancy. “I may be the skipper, but she is the real skipper,” he smiled. “We had agreat crew. We have some really enthusiastic guys who are serious and reallywant to make it work. We are not like a full professional team. But we have somereally good sailors with really good skills who like each other and all like to win.”

De Pietro’s Class ‘A’ entry started the race at 1330 EDT from Marion, MA lastFriday and officially crossed the finish line at St David’s Head, Bermuda at 1128on Monday, June 20. Having arrived perhaps far earlier than expected, De Pietroand crew had the luxury of sipping champagne at a cocktail reception at StDavid’s Lighthouse as the second yacht (Brigand) to finish crossed the finish linein fading light.

Racecourse Warrior, Knight of the RoadAs the final edition of the 2011 Race Week News was going to press, twovery grateful Block Islanders stopped by the Race Week News trailer toexpress their thanks for the chivalrous action of Alec Snyder, a fleet cap-tain at Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, NY who is competing in thisweek’s regatta.

During last night’s thunderstorm, the couple’s neighbor’s car got stuck in aroadside ditch. Alec stopped to pull the car out, getting soaked in theprocess. Well done, Alec.
