Andressa Rodrigues, 30, grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Jeff Kershaw, 29, in Rhode Island. They met three summers ago on Block Island at Yellow Kittens tavern and were married at the Sullivan House on June 1. Their 100 guests included a number who flew in from Brazil, among them pastor Eric Thompson who performed half the ceremony in Portuguese. The other half was performed in English by island resident and popular officiant André Boudreau. Andressa and Jeff have worked summers on Block Island for more than a decade. Both have worked in the hospitality business. Jeff, in fact, worked at Ballard’s Inn helping other couples plan their weddings.

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:

1. Take pictures at a few different locations around the island after the ceremony to make the most of the beautiful landscapes.

2. Use local vendors to save on transportation headaches.

3. Choose a venue that can somehow cater to poor weather, just in case.

We are still talking about…… watching several of the children at the wedding who had such a blast playing, dancing, running around, all while not being able to speak the same language.

1. Our first dance. John Brazile provided our reception music.2, 3. We were able to bring a Brazilian wedding tradition to Block Island, with favors of mini bottles of caracha liquor and bem casados marriage cakes, which are two soft, sponge-like cakes stuck together with dulce de leche and wrapped in beautiful paper and bows like a little present. The significance of the cake is that it’s two parts sealed through complicity and mutual respect. Each guest gets one

as a gift — tradition says that brings lots of luck and happiness to this union.4. My bridesmaids will wear their dresses again. My dress is by Maggie Sotero.5. One of my favorite moments was having my brother walk me down the aisle and seeing Jeff waiting for me with a big smile. Jeff: I thought I was prepared for the way she was going to look in her dress walking down the isle, but when I saw her, well, it will be a memory I will never forget.

6. Among our favorite pictures is one of Jeff’s niece and the Brazilian pastor’s daughters playing like they have been friends for years and they actually could not even speak the same language.

It was New Year’s Eve on the Brooklyn Bridge and 10 minutes to ball drop. A German studying in Canada and visiting New York City for the evening’s merriment and a Rhode Islander living in New York and showing her under-21 cousins a night in the big city find each other. The next fall she heads to grad school in London, he to grad school in Austria, which puts them on the same continent and close enough for love. Jessica Scholl, 30, and Christian Bews, 29, were married September 13 at the Sullivan House before 140 guests. Having grown up in Rhode Island, Jessica had visited Block Island often and brought Christian here first chance she got. On a subsequent trip to the island, he proposed. The couple lives in Munich now but wanted to show their guests, who came from Europe, Australia, Africa, Canada and across the United States, “a unique part of the U.S. We really enjoyed being able to spend the whole weekend on the island with friends and family. We loved riding our bikes down Corn Neck Road or into town and always passing or bumping into our guests. The atmosphere is so unique that it makes everything special,” says Jessica.

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:1. Hire local vendors. 2. Get a group discount rate for bike rentals for your guests. It’s the best way

to see the island.3. Make a weekend out of it! We had a welcome party at Ballard’s Inn the

day before the wedding when most of the guests started arriving on the ferry. This way they were able to throw their bags in a van we had parked and come straight to meet us.

4. A minor but important detail: Be prepared for poor internet speed. The virtual remoteness of Block Island is certainly one of the island’s charms, but has its drawbacks too.

5. We wish we had gotten a videographer. As the bride and groom, you are absent for so much of your guests’ experience. We thought we could delegate this task to guests, but they were too busy dancing and having a good time to take on this responsibility.

Jessica & Christian: Bringing the World to Block Island

1. I loved the signs my dad painted on the driftwood that Jessica’s mom had collected.2. My bridesmaids made my bouquet (and their own) out of shells and fallen foliage. They were beautiful and free (besides the ribbon and hot glue).3. We had two photographers. Lesley Helterline shot the ceremony and photos around the island. Michael Benson took photos at the reception.4. The traditional Bavarian Gstanzl, or song mocking the bridal couple, performed by Christian’s groomsmen complete with accordion, guitar and trumpet was probably the most unique aspect of the wedding.5. My favorite parts were the Gstanzl performance, by my groomsmen and a surprise performance by my wife, who rapped a rendition of Ice, Ice, Baby (to Bews,

Bews, Baby). Jonathan O’Neill, our DJ, did a great job keeping everyone on the dance floor.6. On the expansive Sullivan House lawn were games including croquet, corn hole, and horseshoes. Inside the tent we had each table compete over how well they knew us by distributing a quiz during dinner. The intention was for this to be a conversation starter for some of the less familiar tables. We think it worked fairly well, and we got some pretty funny answers. 7. Jessica made photo holders by filling a small jar with sea glass (collected by her and her mother) and securing a wrapped wire in the cork. We then took polaroid photos with each of our guests and gave them the polaroid and photo holder as a favor. This gave us a chance to have a quick personal moment

with each of our guests and ensure we got a photo with everyone. And it gave Jessica an excuse to engage in her favorite hobby: collecting sea glass. We also had a beach-themed photo booth by stringing lights and shells over a white canvas backdrop and using the ipad ‘incredibooth’ app.

They met on match.com, but it was their first trip away together to Block Island that solidified the relationship for this couple from western Massachusetts. “I brought Pete [Peter Houser, 31] to the island for his birthday a few years back after a couple months of dating,” says Jessica Petit, 29, “and we really connected there. We loved the different environments; beach to farm.” For their wedding on June 14, she and Peter found that perfect combo with a marriage ceremony on Mansion Beach followed by a reception for 60 at the Rose Farm Inn. “We feel like we had the best of both worlds,” says Jessica.


Use Catering by Kimberly. The food is out of this world! Our entire menu was made custom to what we wanted and everything was beyond fabulous.

Jessica & Peter: The Best of Both Worlds

1. Moped rides and visits to Mohegan Bluffs were a highlight for us and for our guests over the wedding weekend. 2. Pete’s Uncle John Benoit officiated the ceremony, he had everyone involved and it was extremely heartfelt and intimate. We loved the ceremony site made of DIY driftwood walls.3. We had a great time at Poor People’s Pub. Everyone on the island knows each other and is friendly and helps everyone out. 4. Pete and I asked Alicia at Block Island Cakes to make a jumbo cupcake as our cake. We didn’t realize how huge it was going to be until we were told to go cut our cake. We couldn’t stop laughing, but it was so

delicious!5. Mason jars served as our favors and as the glassware during the reception. We had just finished putting the details on all the mason jars when I realized that I never washed them, admits Jessica. No one else knew until now! Sorry!6, 7. The Rose Farm Inn is on a beautiful farm overlooking the ocean and the staff was phenomenal.

Kathleen Wittels, 37, met Alex Dulavitz, 31, when she traveled to Bonaire to complete her open water dive for scuba certification and he turned out to be one of the trip leaders. The two knew they wanted to get married outside overlooking the water and say that the moment they saw the views from The Sullivan House they knew it was their perfect location. They hosted 130 guests there on September 27 and say it was, indeed, perfect. “Everyone kept commenting on how beautiful it was,” says Kathleen. “It was also really nice that the island is small enough that we kept running into friends outside of the organized events. The end of September is a perfect time because the crowds are gone. It felt like it was our island.”


1. Use as many local vendors as possible to minimize the stress of organizing transportation and accommodations for people.

2. Have a website with Block Island and wedding information.

3. Relax and have fun! Block Island is a perfect place to get married. We didn’t get stressed about the details once we were there and we were able to just enjoy our time with our family and friends.

Everybody is still talking about...... the weather. 75 and sunny on the last weekend of September — we couldn’t have asked for a better day. We had been keeping our fingers crossed for no hurricanes.

1. We loved that everything was in one place at the Sullivan House. After the ceremony, people could start enjoying cocktails on the lawn, and then we moved into the tent for dinner and dancing.2. Alex’s best friend Nick Fazah was the officiant. It was really special to have a friend marry us. We were able to construct the ceremony just as we wanted.3. The bridesmaid dresses were simple and elegant in a really beautiful deep purple. Jamie Rose did the flowers — she creates beautiful designs. 4. The time we had together before the ceremony was really special. We went to the Southeast Lighthouse and Charlestown Beach for pre-wedding photos.5. The seafood was particularly popular.6. We had a poster of Block Island matted for all our guests to sign. It’s a really nice souvenir from the day.

7. We used sand dollars and wrote our guests’ names on them for our escort cards.8. We had cupcakes made by Block Island Gourmet — red velvet (bride’s favorite), chocolate with vanilla frosting (groom’s favorite), and lemon-raspberry.

have an indoor area with tables that was completely open to the patio and beach (where we had our personalized corn hole boards). The night ended with a bonfire on the beach with s’mores, which was a huge hit.

“When we first visited Block Island, it just felt like home,” says Mary Elizabeth Gange, 28 of Long Island of the trip she took with fiancé Eric Rizzo, 33, of Buffalo, New York. Then, “when we went to the wedding show at The Sullivan House and saw the tent all dressed up, we were certain that this was where we wanted to begin our new life together.” The two, who met while working at the New York State Summer School of the Arts in Fredonia, New York, say they wanted not just a wedding but a wedding weekend. “We wanted to spend quality time with everyone and not feel rushed. We wanted an escape from everyday life.”


1. A Block Island wedding is a little more effort for the bride and groom and guests alike. However, when you invite someone to a Block Island wedding, you are inviting them to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Just do it. You won’t be sorry!

2. We provided our guests with an itinerary and island map at each of their hotels.

3. I didn’t realize I needed help on the beach with my dress for photos. At the last second, my little cousin jumped in our van on our way to the beach and, if she hadn’t come along, most of our beach pictures wouldn’t have been possible. She held my dress up in between photos and while changing locations. I had no idea how much work it was to walk on the sand in a huge wedding gown!

Everybody is still talking about…… the bagpipes that played at the conclusion of our mass and also at sunset at our reception.

Mary & Eric: An Escape from Everyday Life

1, 2, 3. We had a cocktail party on Friday night at The National Hotel. It was a great and fun way to see everyone and get them excited for our wedding. 4. Our friend Raf sang ‘Ave Maria’ at the church accompanied by our friend Shane on the violin. It was gorgeous, and a cherished memory.5. Some of our most beautiful memories of the day are from taking photos at Charlestown Beach before the ceremony. 6. Flowers by La Bella Rose made the day even more beautiful.

7. We named our tables with nautical themes, and placed the names in sailor knots.8. Sugar Rush made an amazing array of treats and cakes.9. At sunset, we had Eric’s cousin Rod, a professional bagpiper, play as the sun went down. Everyone came out from the tent and listened. We tried our best attempt at an Irish jig!

Emily & James: From London with Love Emily Epstein, 28, and James Rouse, 39, met in England, where James is from and where Emily was studying in London for a semester. First chance she got, Emily brought James to her grandparents house on Block Island. Just as she had, says Emily, “He fell in love with the natural beauty and relaxed feel of this special place.” After James proposed on Fred Benson Town Beach, “we both knew getting married here was the only option,” says Emily. On September 7 at the Spring House hotel, they tied the knot in front of 80 friends and family members who had spent the prior few days falling in love with the island as well. “The natural beauty and laid back feel of the island made for the perfect setting,” says Emily. “There was something for all of our guests to do, whether it was biking around the island, visiting the various shops and restaurants in town or relaxing on the beach with a drink, everyone really enjoyed their time on B.I.”


1. If your budget allows, have an inclusive rehearsal dinner or welcome drinks for all wedding guests before the big day. We were so glad we did this, as it allowed us to spend more time with our guests over the weekend and everyone had a great time getting to know one another, which was especially nice since we had many guests from the U.K.

2. Use local vendors as much as possible. All the local vendors we worked with were fantastic and incredibly professional. They know the island and how things work, so you can put your trust in them and just relax.

3. Enjoy every moment and don’t fret about the small details. The beauty of the island provides the perfect setting, and everything else will just flow from this.

1, 2, 3.The Spring House is a really special setting, we had many comments from guests on how beautiful it was. 4. Will her bridesmaids wear their dresses again? I hope so. They all looked so beautiful. Jamie at La Bella Rose did our flowers. She is very talented and a pleasure to work with. She was very patient with me and captured my vision perfectly.5. All the food the Spring House catered was terrific. A signature cocktail, English Pimms, was the most popular drink!

Marc Scortino, of Island Entertainment, kept guests dancing all night and even inadvertently sent the groom to the medical center. Reports Emily: James split his chin open while breakdancing at the reception; he had to get 15 stitches the next morning!

Erin & Michael: The Wedding of our Dreams

Ignoring the fact that the couple at the table next to them seemed to be breaking up, Michael Kennedy, 36, popped the question to Erin Broughton, 31, at a favorite restaurant in the west village. She said yes and on September 13 the two, along with 100 close friends, tied the knot at the Atlantic Inn. “Michael’s family has vacationed on Block Island every summer for the last 20 years,” says Erin. “I joined the adventure when we started dating about 6 years ago. The island became so ‘us’ over those years. My family is all from California, so the chances that they’d ever visit Block Island on their own were slim. We thought it would be so fun and unique to have a mini destination wedding. And it was.” Erin and her mom spent the week leading up to the wedding together on the island and, in addition to getting all the details squared away, says Erin, it was “a special time for my mom and I to spend together, one I will cherish forever.” The weather gods smiled on this couple. Rain was forecast for the morning, so they were sure their outdoor ceremony would have to move to the tent. But the rain held off and, says Erin, “we had a perfect morning of pictures and an even more gorgeous wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. Then, when all guests had been seated for dinner and were enjoying their appetizer, the sky opened up and it poured. But the rain actually made everything so cozy — all of the California people loved it for sure. It was also kind of perfect since our first dance song was John Hiatt’s ‘Feels Like Rain.”’ They credit the Atlantic Inn, its owners Brad and Anne Marthens and staff for throwing what they describe as the wedding of their dreams. “Brad Marthens is the man. He covered all details – even ones I hadn’t thought of. I am so impressed and thankful for him running the show because everything was perfect. At our after-party, one guest was telling someone she was jonesing for a slice of pizza. Not more than 15 seconds after she said that, servers came out of the kitchen with an array of mini-sandwiches, pizzas, and pastries for the guests. She was blown away, saying, ‘What is this magical place?’”

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:1. Have a beach bonfire for at least one of your events. We did ours as our welcome/

rehearsal dinner for all guests. It was a really fun and casual way for everyone to kick off the weekend and get to know each other.

2. Take your formal photos before the ceremony and give your photographer at least two hours of photo time for just the bride and groom. The island is so beautiful and you’ll want to get at least two locations in to take advantage of the beauty. Being around all the beauty and having that quiet time in the car also relaxed us and made us feel ready for the ceremony to start. And getting formal photos done before the wedding allows you to attend (and enjoy) your cocktail hour!

3. Have an after-party following the reception and surprise your guests with late night snacks – the island shuts down by 10 and you will be their hero if you feed them again before bed.

4. Designate someone to film the toasts at the reception. We opted not to have a videographer but would have loved to at least have the toasts recorded on a smartphone.

5. Hire a shuttle from the train to the ferry. Having a professional company, Rock Star Limo, chauffeur our guests from the train station gave us peace of mind that everyone was getting to the ferry. We even had a few people miss their train but they were able to contact the driver (rather than the bride) to reschedule.

Everybody is still talking about…... brunch at the Atlantic Inn on Sunday morning. The food was so delicious and it was really fun to see everyone again and reminisce about the wedding day.

1. We decided not to have a traditional bridal party due to the fact that there were so many people we wanted to honor (we both have big families). So we just had a Maid of Honor and Best Man stand up with us. For the others, we let them know they were our ‘bridal party’ but they could wear whatever formalwear they wanted. We still had them take photos with us before the ceremony and invited them to all the pre-events so they were still honored apart from the other guests. It made the wedding processional less stressful since we didn’t have to herd a bunch of people. 2. The food was out of this world. Brad and the Atlantic Inn team catered the reception and they were such pros. People are still talking about the tequila shrimp, lamb lollipops and the entire raw bar at the cocktail hour. The staff at the Atlantic Inn blew me away. The entire reception was orchestrated beautifully where everyone was served at the same time and the food was delicious and hot when it arrived. That is a hard combination to successfully manage especially when it’s happening outside in a tent. It was really impressive. 3. A favorite photo is us laughing because Michael started to repeat the vows when it was my turn!

4. Walking up the hill to attend our cocktail hour was special because it was a full view of all of our family and friends hanging out on the front porch. We both stopped just to take it in.5. We chose Blocks of Fudge for favors. We heard they were the best and it was true! People were eating their fudge before their appetizers arrived! My mom’s friend made these cool centerpieces out of beachwood from a Ventura, Calif., beach. Everything had a nautical touch to it.6. Erin’s grandmother wasn’t able to make it to the wedding due to her health so we set up a live Skype feed of the whole wedding so she could watch in real time from California. 7. We had a crazy good live band, The New York Funk Exchange, that played a different type of music for each event (classical for the ceremony, jazz trio for cocktail hour, funk for the reception, and the band leader DJ’d for the after party).8. The Atlantic Inn property is very spread out so the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception felt like different locations but really they were all across the lawn from one another and no transportation was needed. And everywhere you turn is another spectacular view.

“Every aspect of our wedding was done by someone we knew, every aspect,” marvels Felicia Cinquegrana, 29, a jewelry designer who lives on Block Island year round. “It reminds me of the old days when a townsperson would get married and the town would come together and bring their skills and goods to create a special day. This community full of amazing people came together to help us throw the wedding of our dreams, a wedding we could never have had anywhere else. Everybody here has a special skill, craft, or connection, and they all so generously donated their time and talents to make our wedding a dream.” Felicia married woodworker and boatbuilder John Puckett, 38, on September 28 at the Sullivan House with food catered by their friends at Poor People’s Pub. Their story is Block Island all the way: They met at Captain Nicks in the summer of 2010 and John proposed last summer at Winfield’s restaurant. “It was the night before my birthday,” says Felicia. “He got down on one knee at the table and asked. The whole restaurant cheered. He said he wanted to make a big spectacle out of it which, if you know him, really isn’t his style. I loved it.” To make their at-home wedding feel more like a destination wedding they rented a separate house for the bride and bridesmaids. “The night before the wedding all the boys went and slept at John’s and my house, leaving the girls to create flower arrangements, get mani-pedis, and have a wedding eve surrounded by women. In the morning we were all able to get ready at the house together. It also allowed John and I to uphold the tradition of not seeing each other before the wedding,” says Felicia. Meanwhile other friends were busy decorating the tent at the Sullivan House and preparing the food. “The food from Poor People’s Pub was outstanding,” says Felicia, “ We had passed hot apps, and a smoked fish and cheese table during cocktail hour. Dinner was a traditional Italian antipasto, jerk chicken, pepper crusted sirloin, mashed potatoes, veggies, and pesto pasta primavera. All of it was delicious!”

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:1. Use local vendors and artisans to create your perfect day —there

are many amazing resources on the island. 2. Consider an early welcome event. We had a clam bake on the

beach for our rehearsal dinner. We held it two nights before the wedding, as to not put ourselves in a bad position the day of. It was beautiful, we cooked lobsters and clams in the ground, we had a huge beachfire, and lit floating lanterns. Everybody from both sides got to meet and know each other in a relaxed, true Block Island setting.

3. Give yourselves enough time for taking photos. I wish I had gotten myself and the bridesmaids dressed earlier, so that we could have had more time to take pictures before the ceremony.

Everybody is still talking about…… how much they danced. And how it was a great exclamation point to our busy summer.

1, 2. A highlight for the bride was time set aside to spend with her bridesmaids, for whom she designed and made one-of-a-kind necklaces.3. John handmade a beautiful arbor from island driftwood for us to stand under. He even carved an Irish infinity knot onto it. His sister Catherine was the officiant. The moment wasn’t without incident for John. As he describes it: I started reading my vows on the wrong side of the paper. I realized as I was finishing the first paragraph that this was not the beginning but the middle, and had a small panic attack in my own head. I finished the sentence, and calmly turned to the crowd and said ‘So… I started on the wrong side of the paper...I’m gonna start over.’ This got a pretty big laugh from everyone, which calmed me down and everything went smoothly from there.4, 5. Says Felicia: My idea for decor was to create a sort of enchanted forest in the tent. We decorated the inside of the tent with hanging glass terrariums filled with string lights, flowers, and moss, which doubled as

the favors. We had a few on a table with a sign and some scissors. At the end of the night everybody got to cut one down and take it home. 6. During cocktail hour, Barnacle, a small sea shanty band, played beautiful salty songs to set the tone of the wedding. We set up wicker outdoor furniture outside the tent for cocktail hour decorated with string lights in mason jars to look like fireflies.7. Marc Scortino was our DJ, and he started off with great Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and big band during dinner which both of our large Italian families loved. Our friends, Block Island’s own 007’s played at the end of the night and that really got us all up on the dance floor. 8. My father passed away five years ago, and in lieu of a father daughter dance, and to acknowledge him, we had the entire wedding get up and do the “Bunny Hop,” a favorite of my dad and I from father daughter dance days. 9. All of the men in the wedding had matching argyle socks on and at the end of the night all of them had

their pants tucked in to their socks, they all looked like jockeys. 10. The day was so calm and beautiful and we were surrounded by the most amazing views on the island. Everywhere you turned was a wedding postcard. And then, cue the most amazing sunset...ever.

Jenna McCann, 26, grew up spending summers on Block Island with her family. She says she had dreamed about getting married on Block Island, and at the Sullivan House in particular, since she was a little girl. Jenna met her future husband James (Gil) Messer, 27,when they were students at the College of William and Mary, and he made those dreams come true. Gil actually booked the Sullivan House with Jenna’s parents in August 2013, a couple months before he proposed. “The night we got engaged he told me the date,” says Jenna. “We both love the island and so we knew we wanted to get married there and share it with our family and friends. It is the place on earth where we are most relaxed and happy. We love being away from reality and wanted our guests to experience that for our wedding weekend.” “Weekend” is a bit of an understatement. The extended Messer and McCann clans made it their summer vacations, spending the week before the wedding with beach bashes, backyard barbecues and dance nights at Yellow Kittens. “It was an amazing week and it was only possible on Block Island,” says Jenna. More guests arrived in time for a welcome bonfire on Scotch Beach, a rehearsal dinner at the Surf Hotel, the ceremony at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, the reception at the Sullivan House, an after party at Captain Nick’s, and finally a Farewell Brunch at the Manisses Hotel. A constant across the venues? Fabulous flowers! Jenna’s family owns 1-800-Flowers and was able to help achieve her vision of “bringing the natural beauty of Block Island inside.”

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:1. Book the Sullivan House for a week in the summer. It was the

best decision we could have made because we got to spend a week there before, and our guests fell in love with the island.

2. We had a variety of table sizes and shapes so we could have diversity in the centerpieces and so close groups of friends could sit together.

3. Just remember that the reason Block Island is so special is because it is a more relaxed and simple way of life. That can be frustrating at times during wedding planning and coordinating with people, but it all comes together in the end.

Everybody is still talking about...… the flowers. Our flowers were so unique and beautiful. They were done by an incredible team at 1-800-Flowers Carle Place and they really listened to what we wanted. We wanted bright, natural colors that accented the views of the island from the Sullivan House. We really wanted hanging wreaths, which came out beautifully and added a lot of dimension to our tent.

1. Gil: My most clueless groom moment was when I expected Jenna to walk down the aisle at exactly 1:30pm on the dot. She was five minutes late and I actually thought she wasn’t coming! Jenna: My dad and I drove to the church in an old white convertible my mom arranged for us and I wanted to take the long way around Spring Street. Gil didn’t need to be worried.2. The ceremony at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church was co-officiated by Gil’s sister, an Episcopalian priest, and Jenna’s great-uncle, a Catholic priest. 3. A bagpiper played on the Sullivan House porch. 4. Our guests loved the view from the Sullivan House, playing corn hole and enjoying the raw bar and then going into the tent for a night of wild dancing.We brought the shape of the island into everything including our welcome bags, welcome notes, and

handmade corn hole games the guests had a lot of fun playing. We had a wooden-paneled wall along one side of the tent designed by Ryan Designs and they painted a J&G but with the ampersand as a Block Island shape. It was so cool. Sean Kivlehan of Block Island Gourmet did an amazing job with the food, the most popular items were the raw bar and the short rib entree.5. The incredible flowers inside the tent.6. We displayed our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos on an old wooden window pane we borrowed from an island friend.7. A rowboat full of pashminas to take the chill off.8. The Boston Common Band was incredible and had people on their feet all night. They played a great mix of oldies and new songs.9. Scotch Beach was the site of a bonfire meet and greet.

10. The rehearsal dinner was held on the patio of the grand Surf Hotel with its amazing views of Old Harbor and incoming ferries.11. Brunch at the Hotel Manisses proved a perfect way for everyone to say goodbye.

“Zach proposed the best and only way I would find acceptable: with a cake,” says Lily Pike, 29. “I had gone home for the weekend and Zach was stuck in New York for work. He figured that was his best chance to pull off a surprise and spent the whole weekend figuring out how to make a Funfetti cake from scratch. When I walked in from my weekend, he was there at the door with a cake and a ring.” Zachary Harnett, 30, grew up in Brookline, Mass. Lily is from Block Island, she attended all 13 years at the K-12 school here. The two hung out with the same group of friends throughout their undergraduate careers at Brown University, finally making a romantic connection senior year. Both are now doctors. “Block Island is home,” says Lily. “We couldn’t have imagined getting married anywhere else! Since it also just happens to be the most beautiful place in the world, it worked out nicely.” Zach came to love the island over the eight years the couple dated before their wedding. “Everything about Block Island is special and wonderful and better than everywhere else,” says Lily. “All the people are better and more wonderful than any other people. It was so amazing to be able to have my whole island family with us on our special day and to show Zach’s family this wonderful, special place.” The ceremony was held on Lily’s great grandfather’s farm, a nature preserve just beyond the yard of the house she grew up in, where they pitched a tent for the reception. “I think the deep Block Island heritage of my family and that connection to the island made having our wedding there feel very special,” says Lily. Zach’s family heritage came into play in a number of ways, too, including a private Ketubah signing with the families and the wedding party before the ceremony. This Jewish tradition of signing a marriage license before the public wedding ceremony “really took the pressure off the ceremony itself and gave us all a special time to come together as a family and celebrate our wedding in a meaningful way,” says Lily.

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:1. Use all on-island resources. People on the island are great and

they understand island weather and logistics the best. Also, if the boats don’t run, you’ll still have a wedding.

2. Pick a spot on the island that’s meaningful to you for the ceremony, just make sure it’s somewhere where you can get electrical hooked up!

3. Be flexible. You’re on Block Island! Your wedding will be amazing no matter what.

We are still talking about...… this conversation I had with my GrandmaGrandma: Lily, who were those young people wildly dancing in the corner of the dance floor all night?Lily: Those were my residency classmates, Grandma.Grandma: No the really young ones, they were like 16 or something like that.Lily: Yep, those were my residency classmates. All doctors, all over 30.Grandma: Oh.

1, 2. Zach’s parents held an excellent rehearsal dinner with the help of Rita and Elizabeth at the 1661 Inn. Brunch the morning after the wedding was also held at the 1661.3. Instead of favors, we did gift bags for the out-of-towners with fudge from Blocks of Fudge, salt water taffy and Koozies with a cute little clam logo that Zach and I designed. I got to spend an entire afternoon DIYing gift bags with my grandma, which was wonderful. 4. I got to spend the morning hanging around my house drinking iced coffee with my mom and my best friends. It was so relaxing and wonderful. I had Jackie Brown do our make up and Kinga Kaminska do our hair and it just felt so comfortable. I kept wondering who was actually getting married, because it couldn’t be me, I was way too relaxed. 5. Zach and I had a First Look at Second Bluffs before

the wedding started, which was so sweet. I started weeping immediately. Happy weeping was the theme of the day. 6, 7, 8. We held the ceremony in the Win Dodge Preserve up on the hill above my house on the West Side. Our rabbi did an outstanding job. She really got to know us and I think that really came through in the ceremony. A favorite memory is running down the hill to the reception in the rain to the sea of happy, if drenched, faces in the tent during cocktail hour.9. We held the reception in a tent in my back yard. Mary Anderson did the flowers — the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen.10. Kimberly and her crew [Catering by Kimberly] did an amazing job with the food.The raw bar was out of control. I still hear about it. All the passed appetizers were delicious. Also the lobster and the quinoa salad. 11. Will my bridesmaids wear their dresses again? I

hope so! Those gals looked so lovely in them, I would highly recommend that they wear them regularly.12. Dancing with my dad, another occasion for happy weeping!13. Delicious cake by Block Island Cakes. 14. Making our getaway through a sea of sparklers at the end of the night.

Zahavah Williams, 35, and Brian Hartman, 38, say it’s only natural that they would have a destination wedding, “because we live a destination life,” says Zahavah. The two spend summers working in the restaurant industry on Block Island, winters they head to Aspen to do the same. It was in Colorado last winter that Zahavah found herself being whisked away from work with no idea what to expect. She was buckled into the front seat of a glider plane headed for Telluride, where she found herself looking down onto a snow-covered valley floor on which Brian had used snowshoes to write a 500-foot-across marriage proposal in the snow. When she got off the plane at the Telluride Airport, Brian was waiting on one knee holding a family heirloom diamond. The two were married on September 7 at Scotch Beach and then they threw a party at the Manisses, where Brian has been the longtime chef. The two designed a menu together and all the food was prepared by the groom and his team on the premises. “I did ban him from entering the kitchen on that day,” says Zahavah, who herself was busy handling most of the decor, painting flower vases and wooden signs. The couple says one of their favorite parts of the day was the after-party, a beach bonfire at sunset. “The best part,” says Zahavah, “was releasing 50 Thai prayer lanterns into the beautiful sky. Brian insisted on having them as he has traveled to Thailand seven times. They were a big hit.”

Their advice for other couples planning a wedding on Block Island:

Follow your intuition and make it as special as you can by partaking in as much planning as possible.

We are still talking about...… the fact that the whole day went by so fast and we wish we had more time with each and every guest.

1, 2. We wanted the wedding to be very personal so we created most everything ourselves. Brian built a ceremony altar from island driftwood. Each bridesmaid chose their own dress within a color range. We even had a friend, Rob Closter, marry us.3. I painted all the flower vases and signs, island resident Melissa Sitbon of Painted Rock Designs did the flower arrangements.4, 5, 6. The reception at the Hotel Manisses was a garden party complete with lawn games and visits to the animals at the adjacent Abrams Animal Farm.7. A highlight was the photo booth. It was such a

blast and the pictures are classic.8, 9, 10. Brian and I wrote the menu lying on the beach earlier that summer. He and his crew at the Manisses cooked and prepared all the food, including the cake.11. As a surprise, Brian made the wedding cake from scratch and wrapped it in gold leaf as a gift to represent the Hebrew translation of “Zahavah,” which is “gold.”12. Guests loved the intimacy of the beach ceremony and what we created for the Manisses garden reception.

Back in 1993, Sue Tsokris, 51, and Dave Norton, 59, worked together briefly. Nearly 20 years later, they reconnected on LinkedIn, fell in love, and got married July 26 on Block Island. If you were one of their 110 guests, you were lucky indeed. “Our goal was to have people feel like they had a weekend-long party, and that we happened to get married in the middle of it,” says Sue. The couple achieved that by hosting six events at four different island venues, including a concert by Kenny Loggins. They had all the events photographed. “Some of the best pictures are from the day before with people dressed casually,” says Sue. “Spreading out the picture-taking put less pressure on the wedding day photos when it was a little windy and everyone had ‘island hair.’”


Plan as much as you can in advance, so you can relax when the party comes… and don’t forget to have fun – before you know it, it’s over!

1. We are in our fifties and have six grown children between us. These are our kids after painting the rock for us. 2, 3. Thursday we had a cocktail party at our home on the island. It was very casual — lots of finger food, a full bar, and Bryan Twohey playing guitar and singing. Everyone had a great time hanging out in the backyard, looking at the ocean and getting to know one another. 4, 5, 6. The back patio of the Spring House was the setting Friday of a Rehearsal Dinner bash and again Sunday for a Farewell Brunch. Both of us are lifelong music-lovers and we wanted to do something special for our guests so we had a raw bar and Texas BBQ the night before the wedding — and hired the Blue Sky Riders, featuring Kenny Loggins, Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman, to perform a private concert for our guests outside after dinner. They were

amazing! The warm night air, great friends and family, breathtaking views, and terrific music made for a magical night.7. Our wedding was on the grassy hill outside the Sullivan House. It was a sunny day with some periodic winds that kept it from being too hot — in other words, a typical B.I. day! Rich Tretheway, a longtime friend of ours, performed the ceremony. 8. John Brazile played guitar and sang during our ceremony and entertained our guests during the cocktail hour. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. We held the reception in the tent at the Sullivan House, with Sean Kivlehan and the Block Island Gourmet team working their magic with fabulous food. Our guests danced into the evening to the Bernadettes playing great Motown. We surprised everyone with a fireworks show we had arranged through Jason Leone. We were all like a bunch of

kids lighting sparklers and watching the fireworks. We wrapped up the night with s’mores and a bonfire on the beach, thanks to Ray Ordway.

Julie & Mikey: A Beach, a Lighthouse, and a Tavern Transformed

Mikey Kiley, 32, and his family own and operate the Yellow Kittens tavern and Winfield’s Restaurant on Block Island. He and Julie Garosshen, 28, met eight years ago when Mikey was walking his dog, Grace, on the beach. He proposed six years later in the lantern of the North Light. All four island elements, the beach, lighthouse, bar and restaurant played integral roles in the couple’s wedding celebration October 4. They had a First Look ceremony with their wedding party at the North Light, went to Mansion Beach for a marriage ceremony, then headed to a reception catered by Winfield’s at the Yellow Kittens. It was an almost unrecognizable Yellow Kittens, magically transformed for the evening. And Grace’s succesor, Doris, was with them every step of the way.

1. Blustery October weather did not get in the way of beach plans and the rain held out at all key points. 2, 3. The single most successful part of the day was having the entire wedding party drive out to the North Light for the First Look and seeing Mikey for the first time out on that beach.4,5. The stormy weather provided an amazing backdrop for photos, our favorites of which were taken at friend Adrian Mitchell’s farm. 6. The sky cleared up just as we were walking down the aisle and the sun finally shined on our day. We really loved the arbor that Mikey constructed of island driftwood and one of my bridesmaids made a

hydrangea garland to hang around it. It was beautiful! 7, 14. Our guests couldn’t believe the transformation of Yellow Kittens, thanks to Blue Lane Events Wedding Planning and our amazing family and friends, including Danielle Duffy who did the flowers. 8. Jessie Edwards provided us with an incredible North Light drawing that we used to make notepads for favors. 9. Berke and the crew at Winfields did an amazing job with the food. Everything was delicious — lobster mac and cheese, crab cakes, the oyster shucking station provided by Block Island Oyster Company, and the late night sandwich bar provided by Three Sisters.

Monica Dancu, 32, is a design director in the Home division at Ralph Lauren, and Jacob Simmons, 35, is a design director in the Men’s Design division. Jacob grew up in Charlestown, R.I., and his family used to go day tripping to Block Island, so he’s always loved it here. Monica fell in love with the island the first time she came out, for Jacob’s parent’s 40th wedding anniversary. It was the perfect place for their destination wedding on June 8 with 150 people, says Monica, “since it is only a ferry ride away.” Block Island made their wedding special for many reasons, she says. “First there is the natural rustic New England charm it offers. Our location at the Cushman House on Mansion Beach was so special: The ceremony was on an isolated stretch of beach surrounded by tons of stones that had washed ashore during Hurricane Sandy. Then cocktail hour was on the deck, overlooking the ocean. We also had a lot of fun at our after party at Yellow Kittens, which was a nice contrast to the wedding. Everyone sort of let their hair down, and danced all night.”


1. Get beach access for the ceremony if you can. You are on Block Island after all!

2. Try doing family-style dining; it feels more personal, gets people mingling at the table, and you can keep your centerpieces small.

3. Plan an after wedding party at Yellow Kittens to continue the celebration.

Monica & Jacob: Designed to Dazzle

1,2,3. I didn’t have bridesmaids! I was one so many times, and I didn’t want the drama. I just had a maid of honor, my best friend Michael Miller and Jacob had his brother as his best man. We have a lot of nieces and nephews, so we had nine flower girls and two ring bearers. Painted Rock Flowers did the arrangements that we used as bouquets and centerpieces — orange peonies, green hydrangeas, peach garden roses, hypericum berries, and dusty miller. 4. We spent a few hours every morning for the five days before the wedding clearing rocks to create a standing area. Then we used rocks to frame the aisle. Jacob’s brother in law is a woodworker and he made the arbor we were married under.

5. Some of our favorite pictures were taken on the beach right after the ceremony. 6. I had a crazy moment on the morning of the wedding when I went into the tent and saw how long the grass had grown in just two days; I grabbed a pair of scissors from the kitchen and started trimming the grass between the tables! I spent 15 minutes doing this until one of my friends found me and made me snap out of it. Jacob didn’t know this until I just wrote it, and he is questioning my sanity right now.7. Block Island is such a beautiful place so we wanted to keep the décor simple — mason jar flower arrangements and votive holders, hand-painted beach stones to number the tables.

8. My gown was an Elizabeth Filmore, with Jimmy Choo shoes.

Melissa Silver, 32, and Branden Watson, 31, grew up two hours from each other, he in East Freetown, Mass., she in Sunapee, New Hampshire. But it was in Denver that they met and fell in love — the first year each had moved out there! How did Block Island enter the picture? Ever since high school Melissa and her mother have been making a birthday trip to Block Island. “You can’t help falling in love with the island as soon as you step foot off the ferry,” says Melissa. You feel this immediate sense of calm and relaxation.” Branden fell in love with the island on his first trip out, too. “From the moment that we started planning until the actual day of our wedding, our vendors as well as the Block Island locals were so warm and inviting,” says Melissa. They say they couldn’t have been happier with their ceremony and reception, both at Ballard’s Inn. To top the night off, “the crew at Ballard’s built a bonfire for us and it was a truly perfect ending to our evening,” says Melissa.

Their advice to other couples planning a wedding on the island:

Create a wedding website as a centralized location for all info related to travel and hotel accommodations.

Everybody is still talking about...… the swim after the reception ended. Some of the guests jumped into the ocean fully clothed and proceeded to dry off in front of the bonfire.

1. First Look at the Southeast Lighthouse. 2. Our good friend, Pete, designed our wedding programs in the shape of starfish. We glued the programs onto popsicle sticks to use as fans in case it was warm at the ceremony.3. Our wedding guests are still raving about Alicia Martin’s [Block Island Cakes] delicious cupcakes and they were completely polished off by the end of the evening. 4. Flowers by Elaine at Weedweavers were spectacular and exactly what we had hoped for.5 Good family friend, Bob Roy, officiated the ceremony, he really tailored it to us.

6 My bridesmaids said they would definitely wear their dresses again. The Nordstrom dress was a long, navy, strapless gown, perfect for fall weather. They all looked absolutely stunning in them.7. Ballard’s Inn hosted the ceremony, reception, and post-reception beach bonfire. 8 Our favorite photograph from the wedding is when Branden dipped me on the beach. We had been practicing for weeks leading up to the wedding and it usually ended with me falling over. We decided to give it another try in the post-ceremony pictures. We knew that if I fell it would make for a good picture and my landing would be soft. Our photographer captured the

moment beautifully and the best part was I was able to maintain my balance!9. We highly recommend the DJs from Arpeggios.

“My parents stumbled on this little island over 30 years ago after their vacation plans to Nantucket fell through, and they’ve returned every summer since,” says Kristin Brennan, 28, from Katonah, New York. “My sister and I grew up knowing that perfect days exist only on Scotch Beach. In 2005, I worked the summer season at The Spring House and Captain Nicks. When my now-hubby came to visit me that summer, he was hooked on the island’s vibe and it became part of our tradition as a couple.” After a decade of dating she and now-hubby Nicholas Lamplough, 31, from Chelmsford, Mass., were married on the beach below the Cushman House on September 6. “The week leading up to the wedding was a vacation for our families and close friends, many of whom had never been to the island. Block delivered on cue with five days of hot sun and warm ocean temps to go along with the beaches, bikes and beers,” says Kristin, who kept her plans simple by design. “We wanted to honor the island for its natural beauty and its ability to make summer seem endless, which meant we would keep things relaxed. After all, no three-piece-suit or expensive flower arrangements would be able to compete with that ocean view or impress guests more than visiting this place in late summer.”

1, 2. We chose a circular seating arrangement so we were literally surrounded by our family and friends. 3, 4. I held a single King Protea flower from South Africa as my bouquet and it was the only cut flower used at the wedding. Cathy, the garden specialist at Wildwood Nursery near Point Judith worked with us to choose a variety of plants and containers from the nursery that we could rent for the wedding — I wanted something that would live after the event was over. We used 80 pineapples and hundreds of candles as centerpieces.5, 6. Nick and I are major foodies so we wanted a completely custom menu that was seasonally light

and coastal. Block Island Gourmet was able to fulfill all of our requests.John at Aldo’s Bakery was willing to take a huge risk on our dream cake: We wanted it to be built on-site, layer-by-layer, in front of all of our guests. Despite being more nervous than I on the big day, John did an amazing job and took immense pride in the experience and the results were flawless!7, 8. We took advantage of the separate areas of the Cushman House property to keep people moving and the scenery changing. Cocktail hour was on the back deck overlooking the ocean, dinner was in the field and the party was in the barn area. We also used a

second, small dance floor outside so that our guests could dance into the night under the stars (ahem… the grey fog).

Sara Schroeder, 28, and Joe Mariani, 28, tied the knot this summer at the Narragansett Inn, where they had had their first date five years ago. “We both grew up vacationing on the island as kids with our families,” says Sara. But they didn’t meet until senior year at U.R.I., where both were Marine Studies majors. “Block Island is a special place for us. We love New Harbor, and try to find our way there on our boat every week we can during the summer,” says Sara. They both were happy to share the island with friends and family, many of whom spent the wedding week here. “We tried to provide them a true Block Island experience,” says Sara, “from having everyone at Mahogany Shoals to hear Walter play and watching the famous docking show at Paynes Dock to having fun at the Yellow Kittens.”

Their advice for others planning a wedding on Block Island:1. Keep it simple and do as much as you can before the wedding so you can enjoy your time on Block Island with family and friends. 2. Use on-island vendors There are amazing resources right on Block Island. From the tent and entertainment, to the hair and flowers, everything you need is right there. The vendors all know each other and work together so it makes coordinating everything very easy.

1. We had our welcome party at the Upstairs Room at Payne’s Dock, with catering done by Rebecca’s Seafood. Both were excellent and exceeded expectations.2, 3, 4. The ceremony and reception were both at the Narragansett Inn. We had Block Island Rentals provide the tent and dance floor. We wanted to make sure everything was fun and easy for guests. We received the most compliments about the laid back atmosphere of the wedding. 5. During the middle of Joe’s brother Pete delivering his best man speech a dog came cruising in the tent and onto the dance floor with him. Pete paused mid

sentence and observed “and that is a dog...”. It turned out to be our friends Mikey and Julie Kiley’s dog Doris crashing the wedding. (See page 26.)6. A big highlight was the food provided by the Narragansett Inn and their chef Alan. Our friends are still talking about the huge bacon-wrapped scallops.7. Having a smaller wedding of around 85 guests allowed us to spend a lot of time together with everyone. It was amazing to have nearly the entire wedding together on the dance floor having fun.8. Desserts came from Whole Foods.9. The view of New Harbor was a highlight, particularly the sunset.
