My dear parishioners, I am grateful that so many of you turned out elec-tronically for the Mass for Donald Hausbeck this past Monday. As I write this letter, his Mass on Facebook has over 550 views and his burial with military honors at St. John’s Cemetery has over 630 views. A few of you came out in cars to honor Donald as well. I know many of you wish to have been there, but at least we were able to give him an honorable and prayerful sendoff. I am also very grateful to Msgr. Joe Calise for his beautiful homi-ly. This past week I received notice from the dio-cese in regards to sacramental celebrations. We had hoped to start opening up again around May 15, but that was unrealistic. Many people have been asking me when are we going to open church again. The only an-swer I have is “I don’t know.” People call, stop me in the street or supermarket, message me, etc. and it pains me to say “I don’t know.” The latest directions we have been given by the diocese in regards to first communion and confirmation are that all celebrations are to be post-poned with no future date given. Baptisms are to be postponed, only emergency baptisms are to be celebrat-ed. We have no date for sacraments for those in RCIA. In general, all weddings are to be postponed. Exceptions can be made, but only in extreme circumstances (i.e. soldier going away to serve) and even then, only a cere-mony. Anointing of the Sick is for only in emergency situations and priest have been given protocols to fol-low when doing so. There are to be no public Masses and churches are to remain closed. Confessions should only take place when they are absolutely necessary that is when someone is in mortal sin or in an emergency. If you really need confession, text me at 347-956-7164 and we will make arrangements, making sure you wear a mask and we practice social distancing. When we do open again, it will not be normal for a while. We will have to practice social distancing, meaning some pews will not be used, people will have to spread out. Many people will not want to come back too soon. I may have to add an extra Mass to accommo-date crowds in order to insure we have social distanc-ing. I also want to tell you, due to issues of the pandem-ic, the priest who was supposed to come this summer to assist me will not be able to come. He was approved for a visa, but the embassy is closed and he cannot get his visa until after the summer. I wish I had more good news. Let us keep praying for the end of this pandemic. God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, Estoy muy agradecido que muchos de ustedes estu-vieron electrónicamente para la Misa para Donald Hausbeck el lunes pasado. Mientras les escribo esta carta, su Misa en Facebook tiene más de 550 vistas y su entierro con honores militares en el cementerio St. John tiene más de 630 vistas. Algunos de ustedes vinieron en carros para darle honor a Donald también. Yo se que muchos de ustedes hubieran deseado haber podido estar allí, pero por lo menos nos fue posible darle una despedida honorable y devota. Estoy muy agradecido también con Monseñor Joe Calise por su hermosa homilía. La semana pasada recibí un aviso de la diócesis con respecto a la celebración de los sacramentos. Esperábamos comenzar a abrir nuevamente cerca del 15 de mayo, pero eso era poco realista. Mucha gente me ha estado preguntando cuando vamos a abrir la iglesia otra vez. La única respuesta que tengo es “no sé.” La gente llama, me paran en la calle o en el supermercado, me envían mensajes, etc. y me duele decirles “no sé.” Las ultimas instrucciones que nos ha dado la diócesis en lo que se refiere a Primera Comunión y Confirma-ción son que todas las celebraciones están pospuestas hasta nuevo aviso sin darnos fecha futura. Si ustedes realmente necesitan confesarse, envíenme un texto a 347-956-7164 y haremos arreglos, asegurándonos que ustedes tengan una máscara y se practique el distanciamiento social. Cuando abramos nuevamente, no va a ser normal por cierto tiempo. Tendremos que practicar distanciamiento social, lo que quiere decir que algunas bancas no se usaran, la gente tendrá que estar espaciada. Mucha gente no va a querer regresar demasiado pronto. Quizás tendré que agregar una Misa adicional para acomodar la muchedumbre para asegu-rar que tenemos el distanciamiento social. Además quiero decirles, que debido a cuestiones de la pandemia, el sacerdote que probablemente iba a venir este verano para ayudarme no le va a ser posible venir. Le aprobaron la visa, pero la embaja-da está cerrada y el no puede recoger la visa hasta después del verano. Quisiera tener más noticias buenas. Sigamos orando por el fin de esta pandemia. The Concordat of Worms settle the Investiture Controversy

The most significant clash between the empire and the Church was the Investiture Controversy of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. At stake was who held the rightful power to appoint bishops and abbots of major monaster-ies—the pope or the ruling monarch of the land. This conflict of powers began with Pope St. Gregory VII, who initiated major clerical reforms, and ended in 1122 when Pope Calixtus II met with the Holy Roman emper-or Henry V at the Concordat of Worms where the right-ful division of spiritual from temporal power was agreed upon. Despite inevitable power struggles between mon-arch and pope in subsequent centuries, it was settled that no temporal ruler had the right to control the Church’s elections of bishops and abbots. Canonical elections and consecrations were now squarely under the jurisdiction of the pope and metropolitan bishops.

El más significante choque entre el imperio y la Iglesia fue la Controversia de la Investidura de los siglos once y doce. En juego estaba quien tenía el poder legítimo de asignar obispos y abades de monasterios mayores—el papa o el monarca gobernante de la tierra. Este conflicto de poderes comenzó con el Papa San Gregorio VII, quien inició gran-des reformas clericales y terminó en 1122 cuando el Papa Calixto II se reunió con el Santo emperador Romano Enri-que V en el Concordato de Worms donde se acordó la divi-sión legítima del poder espiritual del temporal. Novena to Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians Our parish feast day is May 24 and this year it falls on a Sun-day. I was hoping to do something different this year with all of you (well, I guess I still am, thank you coronavirus), but I ask you to join me in making a novena to our patroness. I will lead the prayers each night in my Good Night and God bless videos, but you can also do them on your own. Starting on Friday, May 15 to Saturday, May 23rd and then on May 24th we will renew the consecration we did last year. Each day recite: 3 times Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. Then add the Memorare: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Conclude with: Most holy and Immaculate Virgin, Help of Christians, we place our-selves under your motherly protection. Throughout the Church’s histo-ry you have helped Christians in times of trial, temptation and danger. Time and time again, you have proven to be the Refuge of sinners, the Hope of the hopeless, the Consoler of the afflicted, and the Com-forter of the dying. We promise to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, your Son, to proclaim His Good News of God’s love for all people, and to work for peace and justice in our world. Yo esperaba hacer algo diferente este año con todos ustedes (bueno, pienso que todavía lo haré, gracias coronavirus), pero les pido que se unan a mi en hacer la novena a nuestra patro-na.
