Mass Intentions for the Week Dear Parishioners, This weekend we begin the new Liturgical Year and Advent season. It’s a time of devout and joyful expectation. In Latin "Adventus" means “coming”. We recall the cry of the early Christians: Maranatha!: “Come, Lord Jesus”; it is a time of vigilant waiting, that prepares us to welcome the mystery of the Word Incarnate, who enters the world through the immaculate womb of Blessed Virgin Mary. Advent has two fold character: as a season to prepare for Christ’s second coming to us at the end of time, and as a season to pre-pare for Christmas. The first period includes the time of Advent from the first Sunday until December 16. The readings of the Masses at this time prepare us for the second coming of Christ, the Judge of the living and dead. The second part of Advent, from December 17 to Dec. 24, is the time of our spiritual immediate preparation to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord. Advent 2018 is marked with a special liturgical event. This Sunday we will use for the very first time the first-ever Spanish language Roman Missal created and approved for use in the U.S. Church. This new Missal replaces the Missal from Mexico, which was being used for Spanish Masses, and incorporates U.S. feast days and popular feast days from south of the border. This new Missal uses language that the average Spanish speaker in the United States speaks and understands. For example, rarely do we use the pronoun “vosotros”. This pronoun will be permanently replaced by “ustedes”. This Missal closely mirrors the third edition of the English language Roman Missal, which was released in 2011, and for that reason it is something very important for liturgi-cal uniformity. The Advent Season always seems to go by very fast; therefore from the very beginning let us take the opportunity to deepen our faith and prepare ourselves for Christmas. Blessed John Henry Newman in his homily for the Advent Season said: “Advent is a time of waiting, it is a time of joy because the coming of Christ is not only a gift of grace and salvation, but it is also a time of com-mitment because it motivates us to live the present as a time of responsibility and vigilance. This ‘vigilance’ means the necessity, the urgency of an industrious, living ‘wait’. To make all this hap-pen, then we need to wake up, as we are warned by the apostle to the Gentiles: ‘Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.” (Rm 13:11). We have to remember, that there is no good preparation for the Nativity of the Lord without the Sacramental Confession. There-fore, as it has been in the past, we will have our annual Advent Penance Service, on Thursday, December 13 from 6 p.m. through 7 p.m. with several priests available to hear our Confes-sions. Please make plans to receive this Sacrament. May the Lord bless us during this holy season and the Blessed Virgin Mary lead us to Her Son Jesus.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Wojciech

The Solemnity of The Immaculate Conception Saturday, December 8, 2018

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most important Marian feasts celebrat-ed in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, the patronal feast day of the United States. Because it is such an

important feast for the U.S. Church, it is the only holy day of obligation (besides Christmas) in the U.S. that remains a holy day of obligation even if December 8 falls on a Saturday or Monday and takes precedence be-fore other celebrations (such as First Friday). Our Holy Mass Schedule is: Friday, December 7th (Vigil Mass) at 6:00 PM; Saturday, December 8th 9:00 AM (Spanish) and 11 AM (English). Please note that while evening Mass on Saturday, December 8th at 6 PM will be celebrated as the Vigil of the Second Sunday of Advent a person who didn’t attend the Immaculate Conception Mass can satisfy the obliga-tion by attending this Mass but must attend Mass again the following day, on Sunday. Two days of obligation means two Masses attended.
