“Prayer brings Victory,” is an old adage. We Christianssing several hymns on this theme. A prayerless man willbe defeated in life. A prayerless family will go astray. Aprayerless Church will grow cold. A prayerless institutionwill lose its vision. That’s why, more than any otherspiritual exercise, our Lord Jesus Christ taught us to pray(Mt 6:9-13).

Dr. Ida S. Scudder (1870-1960), the Founder of theChristian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore, was a womanof prayer. Born to missionary parents and brought up inthe atmosphere of missionary work, prayerto Aunt Ida was her vital breath! Look atthe following line in one of her letters to afriend at the initial stages of the construc-tion of this Hospital: “We are not primarilybuilding a medical school, but the Kingdomof God.” The vision God gave herconcerning this Institution was: “To be a witness to thehealing ministry of Christ through excellence in education, service and research.” The logo of CMC has these words ofJesus inscribed on it: “Not to be ministered unto, but tominister” (Mt 20:28). The Constituion stresses thateverything must be done “in the Spirit of Christ.”

Unless we repeatedly remind ourselves of these fourfoundational purposes, deviation and weakening will beinevitable. What will happen to the superstructure if cracksdevelop in the foundation?

Satan is the archenemy of God’s purposes and plans. We are not ignorant of his schemes (2 Cor 2:11). God’swork is a spiritual battle. It’s vehemently opposed byspiritual powers of darkness. If we are to overcome them, and go forward in our God-given vision, sustained prayeris the only way (Eph 6:11-20). The opposing spiritualpowers can be confronted only by spiritual strength Godgrants us from above. We may be intelligent and indust-rious; but if we are to escape the traps of the devil, wemust be watchful in prayer (Mt 26:41).

God has been specifically speaking to some of theChristian believers in CMC and in Vellore about the needto mobilize prayer for this Institution. When I shared thiswith God’s Servant, Brother Mohan C. Lazarus, a mightyIntercessor, he said that God had planted a similar burdenin his heart too. When we contemplated on what could bedone, it was decided to gather the Christians in CMC andTamilnadu for a day of Fasting Prayer for CMC. We namedthe programme as, “Bless CMC.” Saturday the 22ndAugust 2015 was fixed as the Day for this Fasting Prayer.

During the days of preparation for this prayer gathering, several of us felt that this should not just be a one-dayaffair, but continue as a prayer movement. It is for thispurpose, this Prayer Guide is released.

The prayer points for CMC are distributed over 30 daysin this Guide. Very often we desire to pray, but we don’tknow what to pray for. What’s the point in shooting anarrow without a target? Use this Prayer Guide daily, monthafter month, year after year, in your personal and familyprayers, and morning devotions in the Wards andDepartments. Pages 37 & 38 are left blank for adding extraprayer points.

Why this Prayer Guide?

The missionaries of yesteryears have establishedMission Hospitals all over India to serve people in the Spiritof Christ and to share His message. Sadly, 900 of the 1200

such Hospitals are closed down. Even among the remaining300, several of them are sick. It’s the sin of prayerlessnessof Indian Christians which is primarily responsible for thisshameful state of affairs. The names of some of theseHospitals are also included here in this Guide.

A Prayer Chain is being organized for this “Bless CMC”prayer movement. Otherwise how can we pray “withoutceasing?” (1 Thess 5:17). Anyone who volunteers to prayfor 15 minutes, weekly or biweekly, can join this PrayerChain. Kindly fill up the Chain Prayer Application Formon page 47 and send it to us. You will be connected as alink in this Chain, and you will receive “Bless CMC PrayerCirculars” from time to time. You can add to the dailyprayer points in this Guide whatever prayer requests thePrayer Circulars shall bring to you. Encourage your friendsalso to join this Prayer Chain.

Come, let’s pray and prevail! R. Stanley

This Body responsible for guiding this Institution shouldnever compromise on the principles of godliness andhigh standards.

The Council members should voice any deviation inthe functioning of the Institution, with politeness andboldness.

To seek the leading of the Holy Spirit in the selection oftop level leadership. Mere knowledge and experiencewon’t suffice (1 Sam 16:7). Waiting before God inworshipful prayer is the preparation to hear God’s voice(Acts 13:1-3).

The team spirit that all employees are of equal importance, whatever be the job, should overrule everything. No one should become a victim for regionalism orcasteism. Everyone should keep in mind that eachDepartment or Unit is part of one family.

The Lord Jesus should bless the services of clinicaldepartments and demonstrate His miracle healingpower (Mt 8:16,17).

To be faithful stewards of all instruments andequipments God has graciously blessed us with. Noproperty of the Hospital should be stolen or used forpersonal purposes.

To be faithful and honest in all money matters. Allworkers to work with the awareness that the all-seeingeyes of God are watching them more than the CCTV

The Staff in this Department to be kind in all theirdealings with the Staff and patients. To avoid harshwords, and to show forth the love of Christ.

Day 9God’s Promise

“The prayer of faith will make the sick person well;the Lord will raise him up” (Js 5:15,16)

We need to pray everyday for the patients who visit us.Let’s specially pray for them today.

Each patient who comes here should experience themiracle-working power of God. Doctors can only “treat”a patient, but it’s God who “heals.”

Doctors to lend a listening ear with patience andconcern when patients express their problems. Patientsnot to be neglected on grounds of heavy workload. Everyindividual is important to God.

The 7500 Indian patients and 150 overseas patientswho visit this Hospital everyday should not only getphysical healing but also peace of mind. Patients toget good Christ-centered Counsel and Comfort fromPastors in the Chaplaincy and from the VoluntaryWorkers. Let’s also pray for the Servants of God whocome here for treatment (Mt 10:40-42).

God to fill the Doctors, the Paramedical Staff, Nursesand other Workers in the Wards, who are in directcontact with the patients, with a joyful spirit.

Patients, relatives and their friends should not fall avictim to contagious diseases, accidents and lossesduring their stay here.

Terminally ill patients to get the assurance of eternallife before death.

Day 10 Day 11God’s Promise

“What great nation is there that has God so near to it,as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason wemay call upon Him?” (Dt 4:7)

Let’s pray today for the Chaplaincy Department.

God to powerfully anoint the Head of Chaplaincy andother Chaplains everyday with His Holy Spirit. God’spresence to be manifest whenever they speak in theChapels, Wards or Retreats (2 Tim 4:17).

Those in this Department to remember that the founda-tional purpose of all service to patients is to glorifyChrist’s Name. The responsibility to preserve the Visionof the Founder rests primarily with this Department.

The Holy Spirit’s gift of prophecy to be revealedwhenever the Pastors and Counselors of this Depart-ment counsel, pray and comfort the patients. All theChaplains to be prayer warriors. Nothing should bedone as a mere duty. There’s no place for casualnessin God’s work.

Differences of opinion between the Chaplains, if any, should not break their unity. It is the oneness amongthe Shepherds that will unite the sheep (Psa 133). Satanalone is our enemy!

The Holy Spirit to work in the minds of patients andvisitors, who read the Bible verses displayed all overthe Hospital, according to their needs. God to kindlethe minds of patients and relatives to carefully readthe pamphlets, books and Bible portions distributedto them.

God’s Servants and Christian Counselors from outside, other than the Hospital Staff, to be courteous topatients. There should be no selfish motives.

God’s Promise

“Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; Youwill strengthen their heart” (Psa 10:17)

Let’s pray today for the last grade employees of CMC.

The term “last grade” is work-related and secular. Butin the sight of God there is nothing lofty or lowly,white-collar or ordinary, educated or uneducated. TheGod of the Bible is a God of the poor! So everyone mustwork without any superiority or inferiority complex.

Those in authority should not despise the last gradeworkers but treat them as brothers and sisters (Eph6:9; Col 4:1). Though their work looks very ordinary, yetit is of vital importance. Without them the entire Hospitalwill stink!

The last grade employees should respect authority andobey them wholeheartedly (Eph 6:5-8). To opposeauthority is to oppose God. They should cooperate withthe medical team and thus bless the patients.

God’s power of deliverance to work on their familiesaffected by poverty, debts, drinks and family discord.

The last grade workers to be prudent enough to keepthemselves away from self-interested evil men who playupon their ignorance, and prompt them to strike, andcreate problems in the Hospital. The senior Christiansmust teach godly principles to these employees.

God to prosper their children’s future. He will neverforget the toil they render, that goes mostly withoutany appreciation, for long years (Heb 6:10).

God’s Word: “Do you see a man who excels in his work?He will stand before kings, and not before mean men”(Prov 22:29).

Day 14 Day 15God’s Promise

“Everyone who is godly shall pray to You in a timewhen You may be found; surely in a flood of greatwaters they shall not come near him” (Psa 32:6)

Let’s pray today for our Pharmacy Department.

Most patients get cured thro’ medicine, whether it’smedical or surgical treatment. It’s God who gavehumanity herbs as food (Gen 1:29). If so, how muchshould the hand of God rest on this Department!

All employees to preserve cordiality amongst them. When workload increases, they must not murmur buthave a mindset that it is service rendered to God.

While dispensing medicines, the Staff must remindthemselves of God’s Word, “Anoint the sick with oiland pray,” and wish the patients, with a smile, to getwell soon. Patients who have come to Vellore indesperation should be encouraged.

“You, O Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding inlove to all who call to You” (Psa 86:5)

The Christian Missionaries of yesteryears have esta-blished lot of Hospitals, Schools and Colleges acrossthe country and served people in the Spirit of Christ. In the last 5 decades around 900 such ChristianHospitals are either closed or dysfunctional. When wepray for CMC, it is our bounden duty to pray for theseHospitals also.

Let’s pray for these Hospitals in Karnataka: LeprosyHospital, Hindalga; Baptist Hospital, Seventh DayAdventist Medical Centre, Bengaluru; Mitra AshramHospital, Ankola.

Let’s pray for these Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh:Leprosy Hospital, Ramachandrapuram; Salur; Parvathi-puram; Giffard Memorial Hospital, Nuzvid.

Let’s pray for these Hospitals in Maharashtra: WFPM

Hospital, Wai; Clayson Memorial Hospital, Sirvoncha;Mission Hospital, Jalna; N.M. Wadia Hospital, PuneAdventist Hospital, Pune; Leprosy Mission Hospital,Paratwada; Miraj; Poladpur; Mary Wanless Hospital,Kolhapur; Mure Memorial Hospital, Nagpur.

Let’s pray for these peripheral units of CMC: RUHSA,

CHAD, LCECU, Schell Eye Hospital, Rehab Institute,Mental Health Centre, and other extension projects atChittoor and at Shalom Family Centre. God’s glory tomanifest and the grace of God to rest on all theiractivities.

All extension projects planned time to time by CMC tobe guided by God. Should not forget the Biblicalprinciple: “Strengthen as you lengthen” (Isa 54:2).

Day 18 Day 19God’s Promise:

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all whocall on Him in truth” (Psa 145:18)

Let’s pray for the various Prayer Fellowships andMinisterial Groups functioning in our Hospital.

God in His infinite wisdom has raised several PrayerFellowships and Ministerial Groups in Church history. In the same way let’s praise God for raising suchFellowships and Groups for the blessing of CMC.

Let’s pray for the Union of Evangelical Students of India,Tuesday Fellowship (English), Wednesday Fellowship(Telugu), Thursday Fellowship (Tamil), and FridayFellowship (Bengali).

The participants to be open to the Holy Spirit’s leadingin all such Fellowship meetings. Each one to definitelyexperience the touch of God’s Spirit in the meetings.

Song leaders should work with a holy desire of liftingup the Lord of lords and challenging people to get closerto God rather than exhibiting their talents. “He mustincrease and we must decrease” (Jn 3:30).

Those bringing God’s message in these meetings toprovide strong meat from God’s Word. No beatingaround the bush and materialistic motives.

The non-Christian patients who attend these meetingsto be convicted in their hearts. God’s Word to workdeeply in them. They must become mature enough intheir faith to share the Gospel with others by the timethey return to their native places.

There may be so many Fellowships not mentioned here.God who hears in secret the prayerful cries of thesepeople for CMC to reward them openly. Let there be asprout of hundreds of prayer groups in houses, hostels, offices, and wards. This alone will bring forth Revival.

Day 20 Day 21God’s Promise:

“The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but theprayer of the upright pleases Him” (Prov 15:8)

Let’s pray today for all the Schools and Training Centresconnected to CMC, and for the health of all Staff andtheir families.

“What cannot be bent at five cannot be bent at fifty!” —goes a Tamil proverb. Children educated at Ida ScudderSchool, Vidyalayam, Balavihar and the creche to growin the knowledge of the Lord from their young age. “Thefear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov 1:7).

Each child is precious in God’s sight. The Principalsand Teachers to always work being mindful of thisresponsibility. Mere academic knowledge will notsuffice; students should mature in the areas of duty, dignity and discipline. Children spend more than eighthours each day in the Schools. Teachers to give addedattention to children from poor socio-economic statusand to below-average performers.

The Teachers and the Staff to be role models to theseyoung hearts and never be a stumbling block to anychild. This is our Lord’s stern teaching (Mt 18:1-6).The relationship between Teachers and Studentsshould be like “Guru-Shishya.”

For oneness among Teachers. Similar to how parentaldiscord affects the children, bitterness amongstTeachers will demoralise the students.

Students to be given practical counsel for escaping thetraps of the commercial world to enslave them in drugs, pornography and other evils. It’s no more, “Today’syouth are tomorrow’s leaders;” It’s “Today’s youth aretoday’s leaders.”

God’s Promise:

“They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bringthem back. I will lead them beside streams of water ona level path where they will not stumble” (Jer 31:9)

Let’s pray today for all our Contractors.

As growth of the organization goes upswing and work-flow also increases, it’s common today to entrustspecific responsibilities to Contractors instead ofrecruiting salaried staff. All those who have such tieswith CMC should embrace the ethos of our Institutionthough they may have business motives.

The 500+ Security Personnel in the Security Depart-ment to work diligently, conscientiously keeping thewelfare of the Institution in mind. Should not causeany problem by giving false allegations. Should extendfriendly hand to patients and relatives. In the guise ofstrictness they should not turn arrogant.

Carelessness of contract workers in the DietaryDepartment will adversely affect the health of patients. The Dietary kitchen to be treated just like their ownkitchens at home. Let’s claim God’s promise in Dt 28:5,“Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.”

Contract workers engaged for A-Block and other GuestHouses to behave with dignity with patients and guests.

The contract workers who are predominantly non-Christians should come to the knowledge of Christduring the course of their contract period andexperience God’s gift of salvation. It’s our responsibilityto pray for their families.

Contract workers should avoid getting too close to theregular Staff of CMC. Ours is a family. Unwanted inter-ferences should be avoided.

Day 22 Day 23God’s Promise:

“Consecrate a fast ... Gather the people ... Sanctify the

congregation ... Then the Lord will pity His people”

(Joel 2:15,18)

Let’s pray today for all the research work going on inCMC.

CMC’s Vision Statement says, “We seek to be a witnessto the healing ministry of Christ, through excellence ineducation, service and research.”

The Omniscient God to bless the nearly 500 researchprojects undertaken by various Departments. Let’s callunto God who bestowed more knowledge and wisdomon Joseph at Egypt and Daniel at Babylon, over theircontemporaries (Gen 41:38-41; Dan 1:17,20).

All Researchers to primarily depend on God rather thantheir own intelligence. God to give them good healthand steady mind during research. Challenges in theirown lives should not slow them down.

God to honor them when they submit their researchfindings in our country or abroad. These should bringglory to God and add pride to our Institution throughtheir findings.

Smooth relationship when dealing with ResearchInstitutions inland and overseas. In the field of research,God to make us head and shoulder above others. Thosecoming from other Institutions should get a chance tolisten to the Gospel.

God to bless the work of Dodd and Gault library,Wellcome Building, Office of the Vice-Principal(Research), Ethics Committee, Institutional ReviewBoard, Winter Symposium, etc.

God’s Promise:

“Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that

you receive them, and you will have them” (Mk 11:24)

Let’s pray today for some of the medical Departmentsin CMC. When we pray for a Department, let’s rememberthe Doctors, Nurses, Paramedical Staff and all otherworkers.

All treatment to be effective by God’s power, and thepatients to return not only with physical healing butalso the mental peace that Jesus gives.

(Heb 4:16) Today also let’s pray for some of the Departments and

Units doing general service.

Let’s pray for the Blood Bank. Let there be plenty ofblood donors. Let’s pray that the blood in the Bankshould be well-preserved, and there be no error orconfusion in blood transfusion.

The Materials Department. Good quality materials tobe purchased and kept safe for use. The Authoritiesand Staff not to fail in their stewardship responsibility.God to protect us from being cheated by businessmen.

Day 28God’s Promise

Last two days we prayed for some of the Departmentsand Units of general services. Let’s continue the sametoday. No Department should develop superiority orinferiority complex. All are of equal importance in God’swork. This attitude should prevail all across ourHospital.

Let’s pray for the Central Sterile Supply Department. However skilled the Physicians and Surgeons may be,all their efforts will go futile if things go wrong in thisDepartment. The Staff here to work with good con-science and utmost care.

The Hospital Management Studies. God to shower Hisgrace abundantly on this Department which trainsquality managers for our Hospital and other Hospitals. It’s our pride that those trained here shine all over theworld!

Day 29 Day 30God’s Promise

“This is impossible with man; but with God all thingsare possible” (Mt 19:26)

Let’s pray today for the extensions of our Hospital.

We now have 2789 beds; 7796 outpatients; 2077inpatients; 162 surgeries daily; 52 births daily; 42,000tests daily. As these figures are on the increase yearafter year, expansion is a must. Let’s pray for theabsolute necessity of God’s guidance in this matter.

A small Hospital is already started in Chittoor. Let’spray for the problems encountered while bringing thisto a good shape.

A vacant land of 80 acres is purchased in Kanniga-puram, about 15 km from Vellore. The work is delayedbecause we are not able to buy certain patches of landwithin this area, and to fix a suitable Contractor. If itworks out well, this will be a 1500 bedded Hospital.Unless God prospers this Project, nothing can happen. There are also differences of opinion among seniorDoctors whether or not to go ahead with this Project. Inthis situation, the Holy Spirit must bring all to onenessof mind. God’s work without oneness will not succeed.

We need lot of funds for any expansion. This Hospitalstarted by Aunt Ida with just one bed has become abanyan tree just because of faith on God and ferventprayers. Without faith it’s impossible to do anythingthat pleases God. God is the Source!

Whatever efforts we take for expansion must be mainlyfor the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden. Towhat extent we care for the poor, only to that extentGod’s miracle healing power will be manifested in ourtreatment (Psa 41:1-3).

We prayed for so many things concerning CMC duringthe last 29 days. Today let’s thank and praise God foreverything!

Give thanks to God who brought Aunt Ida to India andenabled her to establish this Hospital; His mercyendures forever!

Give thanks to God for the Doctors and all the workerswho cooperated with Dr. Ida from the inception for thegrowth of this Hospital; His mercy endures forever!

Give thanks to God who spread the fame of this Hospitalall over the world for the glory of His Name; His mercyendures forever!

Give thanks to God for the innumerable patients whocame to this Hospital, those who got well, and thosewho found Christ; His mercy endures forever!

Give thanks to God for all those who studied and weretrained here, and gone all over the world to serve people; His mercy endures forever!

Give thanks to God for Churches, individuals, groups, organisations, Friends of Vellore, and the like who givefinancial and other support to CMC, in India and fromoverseas; His mercy endures forever!

Give thanks to God who has plentifully given us skilledDoctors and dedicated workers; His mercy enduresforever!

Give thanks to God who defeats and destroys the evilforces which keep working against CMC, from insideand outside; His mercy endures forever!

Give thanks to the God of Heaven who holds the futureof CMC in His hands; His mercy endures forever!

Great things He has taught us;Great things He has done!

A General Prayer for CMC

“Our God, who hears our prayers,

“We come to You in the Name of Your Son and our SaviourChrist Jesus.

“We thank You for the Christian Medical College Hospitalwhich is named after Christ Your Son.

“We thank You for using this Hospital as a blessing tomillions of patients over a century.

“Father, none of us is worthy that You have given us theblessing of such a great Institution. But You have countedus faithful and trusted us with this exceptional gift. Wekiss Your feet.

“O God, help us never to forget that this Hospital wasfounded primarily for building Your Kingdom.

“Remind us always, O God, through Your Holy Spirit, thateducation, service and research here must be mainly to bea witness for the healing ministry of Christ Your Son.

“Dear Lord, help us carry out all our works and activities inthe Spirit of Christ, that is, ‘Not to be served but to serve.’

“We pray for all the Doctors, Nurses and other medical andnon-medical Staff of this Hospital. Let them never deviatefrom their commitment, integrity and compassion, whetherthey are Christians or non-Christians.

“O Lord, let all the Administrators and the Staff check alltheir decisions and deeds whether Christ would approveof it.

“We pray for the outpatients and the inpatients. We pleadbefore You on their behalf to fulfill Your promise, ‘I am the

Lord who heals you!’ O Lord, let there be miracle healings

everyday in this Hospital which cannot be explained byDoctors and science. Are You not the unchanging God? DidYou not say, ‘I am the Lord God of all men and women;and nothing is too hard for You?’

“Let every Christian in this Hospital share the Gospel ofChrist to non-Christians. Let not the words and the lives ofChristians contradict one another. Let Your Name beglorified this way. Because India itself comes here, helpus, O Lord, to work with the realisation and a sense ofresponsibility that this is a Mission Field.

“We pray for all the Chaplains who preach Your Word to usand the patients, in the Chapels, Bible Studies, Prayergatherings and the Wards. Let them always stay anointedwith the power of Your Holy Spirit.

“Father, grant to us that beginning with the topadministrators to the lowest level workers no one shoulddo anything with strife or ego, but consider others betterthan themselves, and maintain harmony in all situations.

“We pray that everyone who is trained here and goes outwill maintain the spirit of service for Your glory whereverthey are placed.

“O Lord, You have hitherto kept us from so many dangers, accidents, strikes, and the like. Give us the same angelicprotection in future also. Keep all our families safe underYour wings. Give us new grace and new strength everyday.

“O God, who keeps the future of this Hospital safe in Yourhands, O God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we praiseYou, worship You, exalt You, and fall prostrate before You.

“Our Father, we offer these praises and prayers to You inthe Name of our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen!”
