COMPANY PROFILEBlack Sheep Interior Design Pty Ltd

Black Sheep stands out from the flock by daring to be different.

We think that sometimes less is a bore…

That form doesn’t always follow function…

And that occasionally, the Golden Ratio is a little bit rusty

Mission Australia is a non-denominational Christian charity that has been helping vulnerable Australians move towards independence for more than 155 years.

The brief required us to refurbish existing office accommodation at their Sydney headquarters in George Street.

The challenge was to design a functional space that would provide the non-profit organisation with

contemporary accommodation without ostentation. Throughout the design process we were concerned to ensure every design decision protected the organisations’ Christian beliefs, core values and budget limitations.

A key driver was to maximise the heavily used meeting rooms and incorporate a shift in culture.which allows for open, multi purpose areas that can accommodate a number of work modes, thereby relieving the pressure on traditional meeting rooms.

Significant elements of the existing built environment were kept in-tact and re-purposed to suit the new designin order to minimise project expenditure. A simple, fresh finishes palette served to brighten the back of house work areas. Subtle brand touch points were alluded to by using environmental graphics and magenta highlights.

Furniture was locally sourced with a number of recycled and refurbished pieces being kindly donated.

Adyen is a global payment technology business founded in 2006 and based in the Netherlands, that has offices in San Francisco, Amsterdam, London, Manchester, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Singapore, São Paulo, Stockholm, Madrid, Shanghai, New York, Mexico and Sydney.

Rapid growth within the Australian sector meant the “Unicorn” tech firm was seeking to relocate into a purpose-built office. The fantastic light filled, warehouse space that was successfully secured required a tailored design

solution. We were asked to reflect Adyen’s start-up origins, and embrace the natural architecture and in-situ ironbark flooring of the tenancy.

The young, typically millennial workforce drove the need to design an array of complementary work modesincluding smaller individual phone booths, a formal boardroom and an open plan lounge area.

We tapped into the global professional services quality of the brand and reflected this by minimising the

ADYEN

detailing and paring back the selection of finishes resulting in a focus on whites and bleached timbers.

The open, communal workspace, which encourages a much more socially active work community, is a feature of Adyen’s culture that ‘people are our greatest asset’... and that states ‘we believe in teamwork, and don’t likeegos and hierarchy”.

Artazan Property Group (APG) is a project management group focused on the property market with in-depthknowledge of the entire development and construction process.

It was made clear very early on in the briefing process that APG saw some benefits of moving to an Agile workplace and this decision helped form the planning strategy for the new tenancy. A shift to a more compact, bench style workstation allowed us to maximize numbers across the floor

plate and accommodate projected growth. Staff members typically work from laptops that enables them to take advantage of the various work modes offered within the design. Two meeting rooms flank the small waiting area with a third, more informal space adjacent to it. A large communal bench is located in the café that facilitates impromptu team meetings and a banquette has been installed along the facade where staff can enjoy access to natural light and city views.

The project was an opportunity to celebrate the construction industry and a number of architectural motifs were employed to do this. A feature wall reminiscent of concrete panels lines the main entry and leads the eye into the meeting rooms whilst a timber form work privacy screen separates the workplace from the waiting area. Joinery elements are simple with crisp white carcasses set against plywood bench tops and a custom city scape graphic film is another nod to APG’s market.

Kinexus ( formerly Kinetic Recruitment) is an information analysis and knowledge broking group. They are experts in the management and movement of workforces, with a focus on complex and high risk industries.

The tenancy is located on the second floor of a heritage building. The design is a direct reflection of the work culture of Kinetic; dynamic, energetic and fun. Kinetic operates in the competitive world of corporate recruitment and requested a workplace that was

both engaging and lively for staff, yet maintained a professional image for clients.

A key rationale for the design was communication and interaction. The space is configured by locating the majority of employees in an open plan environment flanked by offices, designed with over-sized sliding doors to maintain sight lines between Directors and team members.

An intentionally “urban” material

palette was developed consisting of concrete, brick and black steel. The appearance of the space is raw and contrasted by a geometric feature carpet in the more polished, client facing areas.

A large portion of the tenancy was devoted to a cafe area where staff can retreat from a fast-paced work environment to relax, have a coffee and enjoy a round or two of Pac-Man.

Founded in 1958 by brothers Frank and Dan Carney in Wichita USA, Pizza Hut is now the largest pizza chain in the world with more than 12,000 Pizza Hut Restaurants and Delivery Units operating worldwide. Approximately 270 stores are located in Australia.

An aggressive F&B market has seen Pizza Hut fall behind its competitors with an influx of artisan options flooding the fast food sector. They felt a fresh approach to store design would enable the brand to reconnect

with its core millennial customer base and help deliver a contemporary and market relevant dining experience.

The concept is based on the brands strong history and with a minimal, paired back finishes palette we introduced “slices” of brand heritage with a modern twist.

Concrete rendered walls and exposed services give the space an edgy feel with timber accents in menu boards and furniture adding warmth to the design. The chequerboard red

and white table cloths have been re-imagined as rectangular tiles in communal areas and the open kitchen wall and red neon signage adds to the 50’s nostalgia.

The new design has been embraced by customers, staff and senior management and will be used as a template for the development of all future stores across Australia.

15 Sheets is a menswear store with a small Malaysian cafe attached to it, a concept that blurs the boundaries between retail and hospitality and originated in the fast paced cities of Asia. The owners spend their time between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney and wanted to bring the unique retail experience to the local Australian market.

The aesthetic brief required us to acknowledge the existing look and feel of the Malaysian store but respond

with something that was on brand and “distinctively Sydney”.

The 2 storey terraced tenancy has some fantastic quirky features and wherever possible the inherent architecture was not only kept in-tact but exposed and celebrated as part of the fit out.

White brick walls provide a neutral backdrop for warm plywood feature displays and herringbone detailed panels that draw inspiration from

traditional fabric weaves. Vintage cream tiles wrap around the POS counter and the food service counter with high ceilings that give the store a light and airy feel.

The food offering, Cafe Rumah is separately branded but flows seamlessly with the store design creating a holistic retail experience for the everyday man about town.

Triglav, is a Community Club that was first established in 1971 by the Slovenian Australian community and opened by Gough Whitlam in 1972.

In a move to increase trade and capitalise on the increase in betting apps Triglav RSL engaged Black Sheep to design a new sports bar within their existing premises.

The brief required us to create a contemporary lounge that is relevant to the tech savvy, predominantly

male sports betting market without alienating the clubs existing older clientele.

Heritage Grey timber panels line the walls and are used to frame numerous LCD screens where live racing or the latest football match are continuously played. The existing bar, sitting opposite, has been refurbished with navy blue tiles and brass detailing, a subtle nod to the classic Boca Juniors football kit.

The strong geometric patterns of Jockeys sashes gave us a narrative to work with and have been manifested in a feature rug, wall murals and a timber ceiling plane.

As well as the new lounge a cocktail menu and improved bar menu has been launched to give customers a unique match day experience.

Monsterthreads is an eclectic art infused gift and lifestyle store. The products and brands they represent mix folk art, character illustration, street art and contemporary graphic design presented in an exciting yet highly relatable way.

Black Sheep was engaged to create a store that allowed for a huge variety of differing merchandise in a playful way that remained true to brand personality.

The challenge was to provide some

containment and reasoning throughout a store that sells everything from apparel, smaller gift items and funky pieces of jewellery.

The design solution played on the artistic whimsy of the brand and was developed in conjunction with a newon-line marketing strategy. Timber elements and soft, subtle tones provide the backdrop for this apparelbrand. Consistency and symmetry was achieved primarily with horizontal shelving that snakes around the store

creating strong datum lines and a visual sense of order, despite the variety of products.

The Monsterthreads theme is manifested in the multicoloured woven signage detail and permeates into thestore as a ceiling plane.

Other brand touch points include “knitted” light bulb holders and a bountiful mural painted onto the rearchanging room walls.

The Cosmetic Avenue group approached Black Sheep to come up with an Interior Design concept for their new brand which offers a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures at an affordable price point. Given the nature of the service, the brief was to deliver an interior that portrays strength and confidence whilst appealing to a predominantly female target market.

The plan delineates between the concierge and waiting areas upon entry and the 4 consultant rooms at

the rear of the tenancy with continuous materials facilitating the transition between front and back of house.

A curved entry wall embellished with warm vertical oak battens immediately greets customers and draws them into the space where they are met by the concierge desk, a strong bold statement finished in square edged marble cladding. Signature blue panelled walls provide a backdrop to the waiting area that is softened by gold detailing, velvets and effeminate

pendant lights.

Consulting rooms are defined by a more clinical, minimal feel with marble details and velvet upholstery continuing through from the concierge area. The brand is further re-enforced by the use of panelled joinery doors and gold hardware.

Located in the Brutalist, concrete podium of the St James Shopping Centre in Sydney’s CBD Mizz Bz’s offers innovative, contemporary cuisine with Asian flair.

Inspired by the classic French training of Executive Chef Masahiko Yomoda the space captures traditional motifs, setting them against a blend of contemporary finishes and textures.

An elegant cocktail bar is the centre piece, greeting patrons on arrival with

its lustrous copper bar top. The bustling semi-open kitchen sits adjacent whilst more formal dining settings are spread throughout the restaurant floor made up of two and four-person settings.

The design outcome features and captures traditional motifs, setting them against a blend of contemporaryfinishes and textures. Handmade Wenge furniture and velvet plums are contrasted with a blonde herringbone tiled floor and raw concrete walls whilst a basket weave effect tile pays
