February is…...Black History Month, and this year’s theme is
African Americans in the United States Military. Mr. Timothy Creamer
has put together a display which includes new books, DVDs, and VHS
tapes. The posters shown above honor the Buffalo Soldiers, who served
out West, and the Tuskegee Airmen, who served in WWII. For a list of
new books added to the collection, please turn to page 2. To read about
this newsletter’s featured Web site, Black Wings: African American Pio-
neer Aviators, please turn to page 4.
National Library Week will be observed the week of April 2 - 8
this year. First sponsored in 1958, this is a time to promote the use and
support of all types of libraries—school, public, academic, and special.
Library Director, Diane Ambruso, has decided to celebrate this event at
Stevens College by holding a book drive. From now until the first week
of April, you can drop off new and gently used children’s books at the
library. The library staff plans to donate these books to a local chil-
dren’s elementary school.

New Chairs For Computer Lab
Ryan Diehl was recently
added to the slate of students
working at the library. He’s a
freshman in Electronics and
he lives in the dorm during
the week. On the week-ends he drives
home to Perkasie, PA, to work at Cof-
fee Head, a coffee shop owned by his
mother. When he’s not studying or
making blended, iced coffees, Ryan
likes to go bowling.
It felt like Christmas when 20 new
chairs arrived in the library over the winter se-
mester break. Unfortunately, like a lot of Christ-
mas presents, they came with “some assembly
required.” Fortunately, Tim
Creamer volunteered to take on
the project, and within two
days, he had all of the chairs put
together and the old, broken
chairs removed. Once they were
put together, the chairs looked
great, and, with the state of the
art computers that were in-
stalled last summer, the li-
brary’s computer lab has a
whole new look.

Local Author Lecture Series Continues...
The local author series of
lectures continued with Mr. Ken
Munro in December. Mr. Munro
writes the Sammy and Brian mys-
tery series that take place in the
Lancaster area and are geared to-
ward the 9 –12 age group. His latest
book in the series, The Mysterious
Baseball Scorecard, features Lan-
caster’s Clipper Stadium and the
world of baseball memorabilia col-
lecting.
January’s speaker was Ms. Genevieve Wimer, the
author of Honour and Humility, a sequel to Jane Austen’s
Pride and Prejudice. Ms. Wimer opened her talk with an
overview of Jane Austen’s life
and works. She then went on to
tell how she imagined further
adventures for certain of Aus-
ten’s characters, so she began
writing her sequel. An admira-
tion of Austen’s writing and an
appreciation of that time period
led Ms. Wimer to establish the
Jane Austen Society of Lancaster
County.

Items Donated to Archives
The two large posters used at the Fulton Theatre
to advertise Mr. Don Rhoads’s play, Thaddeus Stevens:
The Play, were donated to the library’s archives. In addi-
tion to the posters, several
programs, smaller posters,
and mailers were also do-
nated. A display of these
items is planned for the near
future.
The Alumni Asso-
ciation donated several items
to the archives, including
paintings by James Hartzell.
A decision has not yet been
made as to how to display
these items.

Blacks for War, there is a picture of First Lady
Eleanor Roosevelt at the Tuskegee flying school.
The third section, Tuskegee Airmen
Fight in WWII, describes how the 99th Fighter
Squadron became the first squadron of black pi-
lots to face combat.
The Quest for Equal Op-
portunity, the fourth section, dis-
cusses how the military eventually
became integrated after President
Truman issued an executive order in
1948.
Lastly, a tip when browsing this site:
be sure to click on View Images
From This Section. Then click on
the individual pictures for even
more tidbits of information about
these amazing aviation pioneers.
Created by The National Air and Space
Museum, this Web site provides researchers with
a photo-rich resource on the history of African
American pioneer aviators. The online exhibit is
divided into four sections: The first section, titled
Early Pioneers Inspire Blacks to
Fly, tells how Bessie Coleman, the
first licensed Black pilot in the United
States, had to go to France for her pi-
lot training because no school in the
U.S. would accept her as a student.
Also mentioned in this section is Wil-
liam J. Powell, an “aviation vision-
ary,” who published his book, Black
Wings, in 1934, and who organized
the Bessie Coleman Aero Club in Los
Angeles.
