Welcome to the Sanford Black Hills Pediatric Symposium

Stephen John Cico, MD, MEdDr. Cico was recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine to serve as the inaugural director of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program through the Department of Emergency Medicine at Riley Hospital for Children. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Cico is an Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education for Statewide GME Expansion and Faculty Development at the IUSM. He is involved in efforts to expand IUSM residency programs throughout the state, as well as providing faculty development opportunities for Volunteer Faculty at all of the IUSM Campuses. He is a Decision Editor of Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training Journal, and is the online pediatric editor of Access Emergency Medicine/Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine. He is also active on several national committees, including the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Emergency Medicine Fellowship Directors Committee and the Work-Hour and Clinical Requirements Subcommittees.

Dr. Cico completed his undergraduate degree in Honors Biology at Wright State University and the obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He did a dual residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, and then completed his fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. While an attending physician in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University, he started work on his Master’s in Medical Education (MEd) through the University of Cincinnati Colleges of Medicine and Education, completing his degree in 2012. He lectures nationally on educational topics and ways to improve your teaching strategies. He is board certified in pediatric emergency medicine and general pediatrics.

When he isn’t working, Dr. Cico enjoys running, playing tennis, hiking, traveling (especially to Hawaii and Europe), and amateur wine-tasting.

This two-day conference is designed to provide an update of current or emerging pediatric health care issues. The lecture format of the conference is designed to address a nursing and care provider audience ranging from inpatient to out-of-hospital care settings.

The conference will focus on new and changing diagnosis and treatment technologies including the challenges and rewards of providing nursing care to pediatric patients and their families. We will feature premier speakers discussing medical and surgical related topics across the broad spectrum of pediatric specialty care.

Conference ObjectivesThis education offering will enable the pediatric healthcare provider to:

• Examine educational issues in pediatric health care• Summarize emerging best practice approaches and treatment technologies in the delivery of pediatric health care• Discuss common concerns related to pediatric nursing and the care of children and families• Exchange ideas and resources with other pediatric health care providers

Guest Speaker:

Call for Abstracts:Attendees are invited to submit original abstracts focusing on improving pediatric health care on the following topics: innovative research, education, quality improvement, or health promotion. Posters may have been presented at other conferences within the past year or planned to be presented at future conferences over the next year.

• Abstracts are limited to 300 words and must include: Title, Author(s)/Affiliations, Purpose/Background, Design/Methods, Findings/Results, Implications for Practice/Discussion/Conclusions

• Abstracts will be peer reviewed for outstanding quality and timely content. Posters must be educational and must not promote any commercial product or service.

• Abstracts should be submitted to Ms. Tammi Miller at [email protected] by April 30, 2019. The first 20 acceptable abstracts will be included in the program – submit your abstracts early!
