A lot happened in 2015 in our industry – a few long expected, but spectacular mergers and acquisitions. There are still lots of comments on these and rumour about further transactions is in the air. Does the fact that some sharks turned into whales actually mean anything? Does this make any significant change on the mar-ketplace? Not to my understanding. The suc-cessors appear immediately. No one is able to take the entirety and the changes have various roots.

Canon has been threatening people with his patents for a very long time, but last year he managed to intimidate even large remanufacturers in Europe. The aftermarket drum makers respond to this challenge by creating new design drum-gears. The customers are impatient to get a “patent-free” solution, lots of declara-tions from them, but at the end of the day, as usually, the majority follows the price. Very unfairly, because patents and law regulations should be respected all the time. Do those players who had always claimed to sup-port the recyclers, but who launch the finished product as a super-solution today, continue to be ecological? I doubt it. Compatible, brand new cartridge has little in common with the recovery of materials and green market. It is simply a substitute commodity, cheaper than the original. It is a pity that Canon always makes life difficult especially for those who reuse his own, Canon’s plastics, and recklessly turns a blind eye to the clones.

We would like to present to you the „green pages” where we focus on the influence of used cartridges influence on the environment and our health. We often wonder in what words to describe our industry, which arguments to use to convince the customer to remanufactured product and how to highlight the offer. We hope that the topic we touched on the following pages will help you convince customers that the choice of consumables should lean on argu-ments other than price only.

Certainly our industry is matured, developed and educated. As a result of positive or negative experiences we have got enemies and allies.

Who we are?Environment friendly. Companies faithful to the idea of remanufacturing will operate pro – eco. Mainly this means to collect used cartridges, recover the maximum amount of parts, and not allow to waste thick plastic shells. Depending on the type of plastic, the decomposition process takes from 100 to 1 000 years!

Professional. Year after year we can observe a growing number of companies investing in quality management systems. Companies train employees, adapt processes, follow market trends and plan actions. This allows to maintain the flexibility and adapt the offer to the customer’s requirements, ever more individual. Remanufactured products need to defend themselves, therefore manufacturers of components often have to meet high standards. Companies certify their products according to ISO, but also apply for more specific certificates like Nordic Swan, Blue Angel, LGA.

Added value.Can you offer your customer something more than just a product? Personalized approach and unique treatment make customers willing to pay higher price and to come back to you rather than to the company that sells „only” product.It is important to educate the customer, demonstrate real savings that the remanufactured product can bring. Rema-nufactured product can be adapted to individual customer needs. It also meets quality requirements - in many cases performance and print quality do not differ from the original and sometimes even surpass them in quality.Why public tenders’ requirements continue to call for new, non-recycled, containing only new parts? Well, it may be a result of a bad experience in the past or lack of expertise of those responsible for writing tender criteria. Let’s make sure that indeed the customer is able to distinguish between the various „compatible” products? I encourage you to use „Guide to the clones” prepared by the European association ETIRA, who lobby for the industry.

It’s impossible to print live trees, mead-ows or flowers, but it is easy to destroy our environment with cartridges. Only in Poland companies buy different kinds of printers and multifunctional devices for the amount of several billion zlotys per year. It is quite easy to imagine what must the number of empty cartridges amount to. However, the most alarming fact is less than half of the purchased products are disposed of. Most of used cartridges go to trash - just like that!We print a lot and probably the next few years will bring little change in this behav-iour, that is why we must realize as soon as possible that cartridges and their con-tents are also harmful to our environment.

We have become accustomed to segre-gate our garbage whenever possible, but this applies to the most common goods like glass, paper, plastic, metal and bio-degradable products only. Waste sites are full of unsorted products which threaten our planet including tens of thousands of empty cartridges that could have been re-cycled! This is because, in many European countries, including Poland, the companies responsible for waste management to date have not implemented regulations related to the disposal of so-called residual waste. The attention was devoted exclusively to batteries. Even public and communal insti-tutions have been involved to promote and organize the collection of these products.



Now it’s time for similar actions in the field of the recycling of toner cartridges.

Why is it so important?

Of course, apart from the strict pro-eco ap-proach one should realize how much used cartridges and their content threaten en-vironment and also our health. A common toner cartridge consists of:

• cartridge mold (plastic)• OPC drum (aluminium) – this is an ex-

pensive and popular raw material, recy-clable

• rubber rollers (made of metal and rub-ber)

• blades (mainly metal with a touch of rubber)

• magnetic roller (metal covered with flint)

• magnetic blade (metal and plastic rub-ber)

• screws (metal)• powder (toner)

All those elements should be the centre of our attention. Most of the original cartridge components can be reused. Why don’t we re-use cartridges instead of throwing them away?

By re-using we can save money, give work to people, protect environment and our health.

The used toner should be collected in contain-ers, or be subjected to recycling to prevent pollution.

How to prevent the above-described phe-nomena?

First of all, companies must be aware of all those threats and show willingness to im-plement special processes, which will deal with this problem and minimize its adverse effects. Ordinary trash bin is not enough, we need dedicated containers. Instead of throwing away used ink or toner cartridges, hand them over to dedicated companies specializing in recycling of those products. Usually, these are the same companies

which we had bought the cartridges from. But here we come across another problem. It turns out that not every company wants and can afford proper disposal of used prod-ucts because it involves additional costs of storage and recycling and the obligation to apply for a special license. Also not all com-panies want to buy empty cartridges, be-cause not every model is suitable for reuse. The manufacturers of cartridges should re-gard the environmental aspects already at the stage of product design. By introducing your company’s policy of empty cartridges

collection for them to be recycled we not only reduce the direct threat to ourselves and to our shared environment, but we also contribute to the full recycling of materials used for their production. Empty cartridges go then not to waste site, where they af-fect the soil with toxic substances, but to recycling plants.

There they will be dismounted, cleaned and refilled. Recycled cartridges are often 100% reused as the only replaced elements are the photoconductor (being made from aluminum it hits the scrap and is re-melted) and toner filling. The solution is therefore very ecological.

What’s all the fuss about?

Only the Poles consume annually more than 9 million inkjet printer cartridges. If we assume that the average cartridge weighs 100 grams, all of them together would weigh as much as 153 elephants! Up to 90% of the used cartridges hit the Polish landfills today. Consider how much we could help ourselves and our planet, if every tenth company had set for recycling. Take advantage of adopted and applicable regulations. First find a company dedicat-ed to purchasing and recycling of empty toner and ink cartridges. Secondly, start using a Waste Disposal Card – many com-panies do not realize that empty toners and inkjet cartridges are, according to the law a hazardous waste. It also turns out that used cartridges are the essential ele-ment for regeneration of toners and inks sold later as alternative consumable for printers. As a result of huge pro-environ-mental pressures even OEM suppliers are now collecting and buying used toners and

inks. It is worth noting that some parts are reused even for the production of original materials. Furthermore, each manufacturer of consumables repurchases used prod-ucts. You only need to pack them up and return to the manufacturer. In general, the information regarding such an option can be found at manufacturers’ websites. Even the farthest journey begins with first step. This first step is really changing our habits. Thousands tons of garbage can be radically reduced by cartridge segregation, instead of throwing them to the waste. Organic recycling of toner cartridge in the landfill lasts up to 450 years. Let’s stimulate our imagination and get into the new and eco-logical habit. In such an easy way you can realistically help to protect our nature and environment.

And what about other compatible products other than recycled?

All described above problems also affect a very disputable question for domestic market industry. Namely, the change in the law regulations allowing remanufactu-red products into the public tenders. The current status indeed promotes Chinese „Clones” and disturb even more the al-ready low ecological awareness of Polish companies. Worldwide there are dozens of remanufacturing associations, which suc-cessfully promote and protect their own market against Chinese competitors and help affiliated members to protect the environment. It is high time to seriously and in accordance with EU guidelines nor-malize this case also in Poland. Time to jo-intly engage in promotion of green public tenders. Examples of good practices in this area already exist.

undeveloped market, no one even in the wildest

imagination didn’t expect such a drastic turn of events.

The need of one of our key customers for printing quality led us to seek the toner with very high

requirements. The Sales Representative of BIUROMAX recommended the toner LBM06 dedicated to

Lexmark T630/632/634/640/642/644/650; E260/360/460. We decided to conduct necessary tests

and found very high quality of this product. The consistency and the ease at which we obtained

expected results convinced us to use this toner. Since we have been using this product we have

eliminated problems such as difficulties in obtaining appropriate black printouts, overfilling the waste

box, excessive wrapping components of the cartridges (e.g. recovery blade) with toner particles.

Hotel Selection in the city centre seemed to be the best, as the places where my clients are located were scattered in neighbourhoods periph-erals with convenient access. Moreo-ver, the location next to campus, in the vicinity of the Technical Univer-sity, surrounded by numerous pubs and clubs assured me that this nice place will be just ideal after all day full of, often difficult, meetings and negotiations with customers.On the second evening, after the meetings walking back from the centre to the hotel I was initially surprised when noticing the barriers and tapes blocking entrances to the side streets.I thought that was prepared for manifestation. As I approached the hotel could hear strange sounds, something like explosions of firecrack-ers at the New Year Eve. Shortly thereafter, I felt smoke. Getting to the street leading to the hotel I saw a picture reminding me the time of “Solidarność” demonstrations and student protests in Poland. Burned garbage cans, cars, a cordon of police blocking the street, and on the other side hooded figures with molotov cocktails in their hands. I have found myself in the middle of the action. In the suit, with a lap-top I did not fit in this picture. I retreated and after a detour of two kilometres I got to the hotel at which police had arranged the staff. Shields, armours, radios ... it looked scary. At night I could not sleep because of the explo-sions, sirens, noise speakers and commands. In the morning I walked to the subway station expecting the picture after the battle. To my surprise, traces of the night incidents practically disappeared. I decided to look into a side street,

where last night I saw a burning car. The wreck was still standing and later in the evening, when I was coming back to the hotel it already hang down from a crane. During the day some street artists painted it in all colours of the rainbow…Among other things, for such an approach to life and leeway I love the Greeks!

I put a layer of glue inside and out-side the bag, on a cloth and waited for it to dry. After assembling several layers of tape I could continue my journey. I was lucky not to have to put on everything that was inside. My suitcase is now resistant to pressure, hard like a stone (although I haven’t yet tried to jump on it!) but what is most important –
