BISHOP BURTON NEWS
SEPTEMBER 2015
Bishop Burton Village Hall on One Saturday Evening a Month
[2]
Two Hundred And Seventy Seventh Edition
As you will see from our front cover we are once again entering our
film season with one film a month for the next three months. You
will find all the details further on in this newsletter. Such an easy
way to see a good film right here in the heart of the village. Our
Village Hall Committee work hard on our behalf as we also have a
live show together with supper in November – all not to be missed.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking those who have very
kindly sent us donations to help keep us going. We get a grant from
the Parish Council which is our mainstay but we do need to top it up
to cover our expenses which we try to keep as low as possible.
May we please have your articles for the November edition before
the 23rd
October. Thank you.

HEDGES IN THE VILLAGE
It has been noticed that the recent weather has resulted in many
hedges becoming overgrown. Unfortunately there are some next to
footpaths and close to roads where this growth restricts the ability of
pedestrians, especially those with pushchairs/buggies/wheelchairs etc
to use the pavements and restricts the ability of pedestrians and
motorists to see around corners before crossing. If you own one of
these hedges the Parish Council respectfully request that you ensure
that your hedge is kept trimmed such that all pavement users are able
to access the pavements and all road users have clear visibility
around corners. Many thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

HELEN HURST
We have just heard the sad news of Helen's death and send our
sincere condolences to her family.
Helen and Dennis became involved in all village activities when he
was made deputy to Peter Buckler and plans were made to found a
college of agriculture in Bishop Burton, way back in 1953. They
moved into the Principal's house when Dennis became Principal in
1964.
Helen supported her husband wonderfully as he developed the
embryo college into a larger, highly regarded establishment. She also
joined in and helped with village functions, despite having four
young children to care for at home.
Dennis and Helen moved away from the college to Cherry Burton
where Dennis suddenly and unexpectedly died in 1985. The family
had all 'flown the nest' so Helen downsized in Cherry Burton.
Her heart had always been in Bishop Burton and we were delighted
when she was able to move back here in the late 1990's. After a few
happy years her general health started to deteriorate and she was
diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Helen bravely fought this
debilitating illness and after many spells in care homes (but always
returning home,) she eventually had to stay in a nursing home full
time.
We all miss her and share fond memories of her.
Joan Pillmoor
A GRATEFUL GRANNY
I had a telephone call the other day from Anne Overfield. She had
had her grandchildren staying with her so off they went to discover
[5]
the new playground. They had a wonderful time exploring and
playing there and it was a job to get them home again!
So, Anne is very grateful for all the time and effort that went into
making the playground a reality and wishes to thank all those
involved who helped to make her visiting grandchildren have so
much fun.

and during the interval. It would be great to see you there.
Saturday 12th September - Dark Horse
Louise Osmond's documentary is the inspirational true story of a
group of friends from a working men's club who take on the elite
'sport of kings' and breed themselves a racehorse
[8]
“…. its sheer warmth and likability, this good-natured documentary
won my heart – a real-life The Full Monty or Billy Elliot or Pride.
In 2000, Jan Vokes was a barmaid and part-time Asda cleaner in the
Welsh village of Cefn Fforest, a place depressed both economically
and emotionally. Jan conceived the idea of organising a syndicate to
breed a racehorse: drinkers in the bar would get a share in return
for a weekly £10 sub. When Jan and her fellow owners cheerfully
rocked up at posh racing meets, toffee-nosed types would mock. But
their horse, Dream Alliance…..” The Guardian.
Saturday 10th October - Testament Of Youth This is the screen play of Vera Brittain’s bestselling memoir of love,
loss and desolation in the first world war.
As Vera Brittain, Alicia Vikander has beauty and presence: her Vera
is a brilliant young woman who, in 1914, is just going up to read
English at Somerville College, Oxford, although women were still
not permitted to take a university degree. Vera’s story is governed by
the unbearable paradox of sacrifice. For too long, women had been
expected to sacrifice their lives and identities to men. But with the
outbreak of war, men were rushing to sacrifice themselves on the
altar of combat, and proto-feminist Vera has the uncomfortable
feeling that to compete with men in terms of social usefulness at this
key moment, she too must sacrifice herself: abandon her hard-won
Oxford place and take up a nursing post either in England or France.
And so the agony of political identity goes on….
Director: James Kent
Writers:Vera Brittain (autobiography), Juliette Towhidi(screenplay)
Stars: Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Taron Egerton
Saturday 21st November - The Imitation Game
In 1939, newly created British intelligence agency MI6 recruits
Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing (Benedict
[9]
Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma -- which
cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing's team, including Joan
Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyse Enigma messages while he builds
a machine to decipher them. Turing and team finally succeed and
become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgrace
when authorities reveal he is gay and send him to prison.
Director: Morten Tyldum
Writers: Graham Moore, Andrew Hodges (book)
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode |

lights and curtains.
DRAINS IN THE VILLAGE
You may have noticed ERYC in the Village recently digging up
verges etc. and wondered what they were doing. They are looking to
rectify a number of problems with the drains, hopefully once the
work is complete the flooding issues we have along Bryan Mere and
Dalegate will be a thing of the past. They have already been working
outside 11 Bryan Mere and significantly improved the situation
there, and have increased the depth of the ditch along Dalegate.
They have still to carry out the work at the junction of Dalegate and
the road up to Cold Harbour Farm. Hopefully this combination will
stop water coming down Dalegate into the village, and the rain that
does fall in the village will be taken away by the new drainage
configuration. The latter part certainly seemed to work in last week
heavy rain – so here’s hoping.

RATHLIN – CRAWBERRY HILL – OIL EXPLORATION
You should all have received a flyer from Rathlin with the news that
the decision has been taken NOT to carry out further exploratory
work on the Crawberry Hill site. The well site is to be abandoned
and the site restored. The works will be carried out in line with the
timescale laid out in the planning permission.
A liaison meeting is planned for September when further details will
become available.

WIND FARM APPEAL
The Planning Inspector has dismissed the following appeal:
[11]
Cold Harbour Farm, Bishop Burton, Beverley, HU17 8QA, erection
of single turbine. (Ref APP/E2001/W/14/30001772).
PLAYGROUND
Since the Playground opened it has been great to see young children
playing whilst the adults get a well-earned rest supervising!
Unfortunately recently it has been noticed that older children have
begun to congregate in the playground and have been on the
equipment. The Parish Council respectfully reminds all parents that
the equipment and the Playground is specifically designed for those 8
years and under and requests that they remind their children of this
fact and encourage them to play in more suitable locations such as on
the village green
Many thanks for your understanding and co-operation in this matter.

NEWS FROM ALL SAINTS CHURCH
We propose to establish a “Friends of All Saints Church” Group
putting on events and activities to bring the community together and
to raise funds to support the fabric of the church building.
Our lovely church has played an important part in the lives of many
villagers and their families over generations from births,
christenings, weddings and funerals. Sadly if we do not use the
church as an integral part of village life and the wider community, it
will inevitably fall into disrepair, and its closure will be
inevitable. We believe there is scope to expand its use imaginatively
as a community asset for the benefit of the whole village.
We are planning a relaxed and informal meeting in the autumn over
cheese and wine to share ideas on how to renew the part our historic
and beautiful church building can play in the life of our village.
[12]
Further information and date/venue for this gathering will be popping
through your letterbox shortly! So do look out for it, and hope to see
you there.
Enjoy the last of the Summer!

CHURCH MONTHLY
John Dunning recently lent me four copies of The Church Monthly
dating back to the turn of the century – 1900 not 2000. Each bound
volume spans a year and comprises articles that are published
nationally together with snippets from parish magazines from a
particular area. John’s copies contain items from the East Riding
parishes that formed the Parish Magazine Union. It started in 1878
and our parish joined in 1896 when Rev W A Pearman was vicar.
The Church Monthly section contains illustrated articles of social
commentary, theology, history and curiosities – general and church,
worthy short stories, songs and hymns, puzzles and domestic advice.
[13]
A page opened at random reveals: a short account of Church
Musicians, Missionary Gleanings, Homely Cookery (recipes),
Gardening notes, A hint to Sons and Daughters (write to your father
and mother) and a feature on the status and duties of church wardens
written by a barrister. The parish magazine items are an even more
eclectic mix. Again opening a volume at random reveals cricket
match results, parish accounts, services during lent at Burton Agnes,
interments in Walkington – including the startling observation that in
1900 corpses from the East Riding Lunatic Asylum (located at
Broadgates) absorbed more than sixteen times as much room as those
from the parish! The original includes the exclamation mark!
The entries in the Parish Magazine section for Bishop Burton contain
several items of interest. There are regular mentions of contributions
to a fund that paid for a District Nurse who visited the village from
time to time. There are also several references to the construction of
the cross in memory of Queen Victoria who died in 1901. The most
rewarding items are a series of letters to Rev Pearman from John
Dunning – our John’s uncle – who writes of his experiences in the
2nd
Boer War that lasted from 1899 to 1902 and took place in South
Africa. His letters are full of insight and are very well written.
I am in the process of creating digital copies of the parts of the
Church Monthly volumes that refer to Bishop Burton. I will post
these on the village web site when done (probably late September)
but will also create some mini-features which I will include in future
editions of the Bishop Burton News (subject to the editor’s approval,
of course!). The volumes that John lent me are for 1899, 1901, 1902
and 1903. If you happen to have volumes for other years, please let
me know.

BISHOP BURTON COUNTRY FRIENDS
Our 2014-15 year has been a great success with our last two events
being well supported by the village and friends. The French evening
“Allo Allo” was enjoyed by all who attended and raised £280,
enough, along with the money raised by the Christmas meal to pay
for the coach for the annual outing with no extra cost for members.
The outing to Helmsley and Nunnington Hall took place on Tuesday
14th
July. The weather was mostly cloudy but dry and perfect for
sightseeing! It was a tranquil and relaxing day, rounded off with a
traditional Fish and Chip supper at Stuarts of Driffield.
The 2015-16 year is nearly upon us, it starts on:-
Monday 14th
September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, when John
Bailey will describe his experience as a volunteer on the North
Yorkshire Moors Railway. Following this we have:
12th
October “Pets and Therapy” – Jill Shilaker and her dog
9th
November “Mercy Ship” – Dr Chris Blackburn will tell us about
the incredible work of the floating hospital that delivers lifesaving
medical care to some of the world’s poorest people.
14th
December -“Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands in
Shackleton’s footsteps” – Slide show and stories from the end of the
earth.
11th
Jan – Festive Meal.
New members are always welcome (£8.50 for the year), or turn up at
the meetings that you fancy for a small charge.
Sue Brooks - Programme Secretary.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
What Makes Your Home Attractive To Burglars?
A high front boundary
Low side and rear boundaries
Accessible wheelie bins
No visible intruder alarms
No security lighting
Valuables on display
Open or unsecured windows
Unsecured garage or shed door
Unlocked back or side gate
Paved drive or driveway
TOP TEN TIPS FOR SECURING YOUR HOME
Do not leave keys or ID documents within easy reach of
doors, letterboxes, windows.
Close and lock all doors and windows. If you have multi-
locking door handles, lift the handle, lock with key and
remove it.
LIFT - LOCK - REMOVE! Put the key in a safe place out of
sight in case of fire.
Lock garages and sheds so garden tools and ladders cannot be
used to break into your home.
Keep side gates locked and bins stored behind them.
[16]
Use timer switches linked to lights and a radio so it appears
that someone is at home
Invest in a safe for valuables and sentimental items and
securely fix it to a solid surface
Install a visible intruder alarm system. Burglars don't want to
be seen or heard.
Install low level "dusk to dawn" lighting to increase visibility
and deter burglars
Keep side and rear boundaries high to restrict access and
front boundaries low to remove hiding places.
Photograph and mark valuables with your post code and house
number then register items with serial numbers at immobilise.com
You can register your property on the secure property register
immobilise.com. It is easy to do and recommended by the Police

RECYCLE YOUR GLASS AND HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR
THE VILLAGE HALL.
I am conscious that a lot of new people have moved into the village
recently – welcome to you all. You may have noticed that there is a
bottle bank in the Altisidora Car Park and wondered why it is there
given that you can put glass in your blue bin. It is there as the glass
deposited in the bottle bank helps raise funds for the village hall. So
if you are able it would be appreciated if you could put your glass
into the bottle bank in the Altisidora car park.
[17]
Last year the efforts of the villagers raised over £100 for the Village
Hall. This helps to keep the charges for the village hall low and the
quality high. So a BIG THANK YOU to all those who use the Bottle
Bank in the Altisidora car park.
Also it would be great to see you at events in the Village Hall. The
Autumn season of films is coming up as is the first of the live Acts -
Maziaka on November. Chris has described these elsewhere in the
newsletter so I’ll say no more. As part of this you will also be
contributing to the bottle bank as naturally that’s where all the
empties go.
Be assured the bottle bank takes all glass colours – irrespective of
what the actual container may say. If you find it is getting full please
give me a call and I will arrange for it to be emptied.

also to those who provided the food and raffle prizes.
With grateful thanks to all those present.

d) Parking in village- Clerk informed the meeting that she had not had a response to her latest e:mail asking for an update and querying the timescales and procedures. Resolved: Clerk to forward correspondence to Cllr Pollard to chase.
e) Dalegate – 1. jetting out of drains- ERYC believe that the “drains” in the village
need review to ensure fit for purpose, and understand what drains into what. ERYC counselled against just using the pit as believed it will continue to block up due to position and debris from road. Resolved: Cllr D.Oxtoby and Cllr Gray to look at the position in the pit to understand work required to enable water to flow easily and report back to next meeting. Clerk to contact ERYC to arrange meeting in respect of drains in village.
2. passing places - ERYC have confirmed that “single track road with passing places” will be erected at either end of Dalegate; “passing place” signs at the two “official” passing places at the top of the hill, tidying up unofficial passing places with road planings. Expected timescale – by the end of June.

e) Financial Regulations – the financial regulations were circulated prior to the meeting. Resolved no amendments required. Proposed Cllr Thomas seconded Cllr Ellerington. The chairman duly signed the declaration.
05.800 Lambing Sunday – Jeanette Dawson (principal Bishop Burton College) joined the meeting. It was noted that during Lambing Sunday this year there had been chaos in the village with cars being parked down all the roads, on the green and even 18 up Low Balk Lane. It was unacceptable as it made it impossible for any emergency vehicle to get through and for any farm traffic. It was questioned whether there was adequate parking at the college and how could a re-occurrence be prevented in 2016. It was believed that one of the reasons was that the college car parks were full. Cllr Wray had visited the entrance in the village and seen a car park full sign and seen the security personal directing them away from the entrance but not directly them to another car park. On discussion with the security personnel he indicated that the car parks were full. Mrs Dawson commented that she would look into this as the main college car park (entrance on York road out of the village) was nowhere near full and could have taken many more cars. The village entrance is only for disabled parking and thus others will be turned away, there should however not of been a car park full sign and the security personnel should of been directing them to the main car park. Indeed there was a park and ride and this was not fully utilised either. It was requested that in future the police be asked to cone the village off for local use only. Resolved: Mrs Dawson to provide date for next year’s event; Clerk to inform police and ask that they cone off the village for village use only; Mrs Dawson to ensure that there are adequate signs in the village directing visitors to the main entrance; Mrs Dawson to ensure adequate training of staff to direct any overflow traffic to the correct car parks and not into the village.
05.801 April ASBO report –It was noted that Bishop had two ASBO’s in April – the same as Leconfield and Leven. It is not possible to get these broken down between the college and the village. Mrs Dawson commented that she is not aware of any at the college but she is not routinely informed. No-one was aware of anyone with ASBO’S. Resolved: matter is noted.
05.802 Councillor training – The ERNLLCA training programme had been circulated. Resolved: No training required at present.
05.803 Playground
a) update on progress – The playground installation is due to start w/c 25 May. The opening is currently scheduled for the 13th June.
b) risk assessments – The risk assessment is due to be completed by David Jolliffe once the playground has been completed.
c) weekly inspections – David Jolliffe will complete the weekly inspections when available. Resolved: Cllr Ellerington will be responsible for standing in for David Jolliffe when he is not available
[21]
or for finding a replacement. The completed inspection documents need to be filled with the clerk.
05.804 Insurance renewal – The quotes of Aon (£2,295.04)and Zurich(£1463.84 -1 yr; £1,332.03 – 3 yr), previously circulated, were compared. It was unanimously Resolved to take up Zurich’s Insurance on the three year option.
05.805 Planning ERYC have approved the following applications: none
Applications received: - none It has been brought to the attention of the Parish Council that the building work on a house located in a narrow cul-de-sac has been causing significant inconvenience to other residents and users of the road. This has been caused by inconsiderate parking and use of the road by the builders/suppliers etc. Resolved: to consider applying conditions to future planning applications where access is difficult and may significantly inconvenience other residents.
05.806 Any projects for East Riding Voluntary Action Services? – No 05.807 Matters around the village:
a) Railings – cold harbour view/Mere. ERYC have painted the railings around Cold Harbour view. It has been noted that some of the posts/railings are unsafe. Resolved: Clerk to contact ERYC to report. XII Toast and water
Take a slice of stale bread and toast it nicely on both sides. Pour over
