Biotechnology Research Institute

The Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) is one of the fastest growing institutes at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Being one of the three Centers of Excellence (COE) in UMS, the BRI is tasked to undertake high impact strategic biotechnology research in key areas relevant to the geographical location of the university.

Establish since 2011, BRI strives to be at the forefront of biological research by giving our students and community the opportunity to carry out high-impact research project using state-of-the-art research instruments and facilities such as the next generation sequencers, genome analyzer, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, spectroscopy and analytical instruments, large scale bio-reactors among others. A majority of our scientific research activities are undertaken in collaboration with researchers from various universities and institutions in Malaysia and abroad.

We encourage enthusiastic and highly motivated researchers from Malaysia and abroad to work with us as we offer an opportunity to translate the objectives of your scientific research into reality.

Our commitment is to translate research from bench-to-market for the benefit of society.

technologies, coupled with the development of genetic maps linking genes to diseases has underscored the need for augmenting research projects with genomic data. We offer a complete range of sequencing services including de novo genome sequencing, metagenomics and transcriptomic profiling at out state of the art genomic facility at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Analytical chemistry has a wide-range applications including in environmental and materials analysis, clinical analysis, forensic science, as well as bio-analysis. Furthermore, the biologically diverse ecosystems of Malaysia offer a wealth of naturally occurring biological and chemical compounds which can be isolated and identified using chemical fingerprinting techniques. Thus, the emerging of analytical chemistry laboratory services was crucial.

Our containment facility has been certified to be compliant with the WHO, BMBL and NIH guidelines. It offers researchers and companies the opportunity to carry out research within a Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL3) laboratory.

The institute also houses the first Biosafety Level 3 containment facilities within the locality of Borneo. Two facilities namely Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3) are containment laboratories designed for safe

working of class 3 pathogens that are either indigenous or exotic, and can cause serious or potentially lethal disease through inhalation.

The unit contains six suites and a fully operational animal biosafety level 3 (ABSL3) facility.
