Biological Science BSc (Hons)

The course This degree offers you the opportunity to study a broad range of areas in biological science. Biological Science incorporates the core elements of biology along with more specialised modules. If you are interested in broader aspects of biology, or if you are undecided on which aspects of biology you would like to study, then this degree offers you flexibility. By the end of your first year you will have a solid foundation in several aspects of biological science including biochemistry, human physiology, pharmacology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics and chemistry. At this point you can opt for a more specialised degree, or continue with a range of subject areas.

The range of modules to choose may be related to biochemistry, biomedical science, pharmacology, molecular biology and genetics or pharmaceutical science. These choices also influence your final year options.

Final year will include specialised modules and an individual research project. The project is carried out with the support of a member of the biosciences staff. The range of projects offered is wide, but students normally choose to work on a project related to one of their final year modules.

Work placement/Year abroad You can choose to spend your third year on a supervised work placement, which can give you an extra qualification - the Licentiateship of the City and Guilds Institute. They usually last for a year with recent placements based in government and charity funded research institutions, the biotechnology industry, healthcare companies, agrochemical, pharmaceutical and biosciences companies, environmental agencies, education and the NHS. Placements are mainly based in the UK, but there are sometimes opportunities overseas.

Alternatively, you can choose to spend the year studying at one of our partner universities in Europe or North America. This can help develop your language skills as well as giving you the chance to learn new approaches and techniques, which may differ from the UK.

Career opportunities Graduates can find employment in the pharmaceutical, food and drink, agrochemical and biotechnology industries as well as in industrial, academic and charity funded research. Some graduates also go on to work in health care, clinical trial companies, education and environment agencies.
