Mrs Arabin 3‐6 News English In our wri ng unit we are focusing on narra ve and descrip ve wri ng and using Harry Po er and the Philosopher's Stone as a descrip ve example. When choosing and deciding on literature to use as a model text, it helps students to read quality material to help when wri ng a descrip on of a se ng or character. The Harry Po er series by J.K Rowling is amazing literature that most children enjoy reading. To share this descrip ve wri ng with the students is a great way to get them excited about literacy and wri ng. J.K Rowling uses visual imagery techniques that allows readers to visualise what is being described. For example, Harry seeing Hogwarts for the first me is using imagery wri ng techniques to create a picture in the reader’s mind. (P83 from Harry Po er and the Philosophers Stone): "The narrow path had opened suddenly on to the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high
mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers. "No more 'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called, poin ng to a fleet of li le boats si ng in the water by the shore. Harry and Ron were followed into their boat by Nevlille and Hermione. "Everyone in?" shouted Hagrid, who had a boat to himself, "Right then ‐ FORWARD!" And the fleet of li le boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood" (P83 from Harry Po er and the Philosophers Stone). Using literature of this type allows students to be able to unpack paragraphs and iden fy the different wri ng techniques and develop a deeper understanding of how to write quality and descrip ve texts, whilst extending their vocabulary and comprehension. We have been comparing the books to the film by reading a paragraph, for example, Harry seeing Hogwarts for the first me and watching the clip from the film and then comparing the two. On Thursday, 3‐6 will watch the film Harry Po er and the Philosopher's Stone and dress up as their favourite character from the film. Please bring a gold coin dona on for the SRC if your child is dressing up on the day. Due to the film being rated PG a permission slip must be returned to be able to par cipate in the day. If you require another note, please see Mrs Ferry in the office. Ms King K‐2 News We celebrated Easter week with morning cra rota ons. K‐2 we will be con nuing learning about length and area in mathema cs. Please encourage your child to discuss their learning at home and expand their use of their skills. They will be learning about tallest, longest through to smallest and shortest, and similar vocabulary related to measuring any item using informal units. Measuring objects with handspans or their feet, a piece of string or paperclips joined together may create a new ways of entertaining them, whilst deepening their understanding of measurement. All of the students are busily learning their sight words, prac cing their handwri ng skills and learning how to construct interes ng sentences, and Kindergarten con nue to become more proficient with their wri ng skills. The Year 2 students are finishing off their recounts by publishing and adding photos. Science We are s ll wai ng for that beau ful tree in our courtyard to change, but with this hot weather we may not see too many changes before the holidays. Geography The students will con nue to deepen their
understanding of accessing and iden fying how to locate and plot their loca on on a map. Home Learning Most of the students have now achieved mul ple nights of home learning and reading, which has given them a choice of the K‐2 prize box. Please keep the great work in suppor ng your child's home learning. Thursday As a reward to all of K‐2 and to support their understanding of our Geography unit, we will be watching the movie “Paddington” on Thursday. K‐2 have been learning about where they are in the world and discovering their connec ons to other places in the world through food and travel. Students may come dressed as their favourite character from Paddington. We look forward to seeing you all at assembly this week, on Friday at 2.15pm.
