B I K E M O B I L I T Y

We want to know what you think! Help the City design safer, more connected north-south bike routes west of I-5.

Through the 2016 Westside Mobility Strategy, community members made clear that the Fruit Valley, Northwest, Lincoln, Shumway, Carter Park, Hough, Arnada, and Esther Short neighborhoods need better bike routes to downtown Vancouver. Now it's time to implement the bikeway recommendations from that strategy.

In fall 2018, the City heard from many people who need safer, more connected bike routes to feel comfortable biking on the west side of Vancouver. Public input and technical analysis have helped the City identify possible streets for north-south “all ages and abilities” bike routes west of I-5, and what those bike facilities could look like.

STREETSBased on input and analysis, the City identified three streets with potential for better north-south bike routes: Columbia, Daniels-Franklin-Esther, and Lincoln-Kauffman-Jefferson.

These potential bike routes were analyzed for how well they could meet four groups of criteria: access and connectivity; safety; multimodal improvements (better for biking and driving and more); and community context and impact (reaching places people need or want to go).

BIKEWAY TYPESColumbia was identified for protected bike lanes, in which a physical barrier separates people biking from motor vehicle traffic.

Daniels-Franklin-Esther was identified for a neighborhood greenway, in which signs and markings designate a lower-speed, lower-volume street as preferred for biking and walking.

Lincoln-Kauffman-Jefferson was identified for protected bike lanes to serve the westernmost reaches of the study area.

NEXT STEPSCommunity input will inform any changes to the proposed designs, with design complete in March. If the bike routes move forward, the City will start developing plans and notifications for construction.

Construction could occur as soon as summer 2019, when the section of Columbia from Mill Plain to Fourth Plain is scheduled to be repaved. The proposed design concepts could guide future road changes as well.
