Pre- Questions from TA’s

1.Where do I start with my students?

You need to develop confidence and clarity in your students first. Start with talk, games and

repetition, then slowly build. Use your expressions to ‘give away’ the right answer to model.

2. How much can I support during the Big Write?

Honestly, as much is required, but of course the goal is to develop independence so don’t step in

to quickly. The big write is a completely supported session- if you have to scribe a few lines,

reduce the paper size, give spelling words etc, do it. But note it down for the teacher.

3. How do I turn the talk into writing?

If the child has the physical writing ability, then once they are talking and sharing, celebrate and

encourage them to put those words down on the paper. This can be a slow process- you write a

word, you write a sentence, child writes a word, child writes a sentence, you scribe for 2mins=

10 lines – child writes for 10mins= 3 lines and build up

4. How do I help with editing and up-levelling?

They need to understand the process first, so lots of modelling. Use the I do, We do, You do approach.

Don’t try and edit large chunks, just sections for a specific purpose. Use games to help with

uplevelling- chatterboxes, up-level it.

5. What if a child has limited talk skills?

Then we are talking any form of communication. If the verbal language isn’t available, but we have

assessed the mental age, then we can work from there. This will require a lot of flash cards, drawing

and if/when possible, writing.

6. Can we use a laptop or device?

Technology is an important part of the student’s current world. It would do no good to eliminate the

usage. But we do have to moderate and make sure we are using for the right purposes- not just busy

time.

There are great apps or language support tools like speech to text programs to help a child get their

thoughts down. There are also a lot of great games to play for language and fine motor skill

development as well. Typing your story every now and again might also be an option.

You could verbally

construct the story with the

student/s, prompting with

the questions, or set it up

as an independent task.

It’s very supportive in

layout, but I suggest it’s

modelled first.
