Big West Conference

• The Big West Conference is sending Cal State Fullerton to the 64-team NCAA Base-ball Championship. The Titans earned the conference’s automatic qualifier into the postseason for their 27th straight appear-ance, 40th all time. Cal State Fullerton’s dominance continues with the 2018 trophy in possession. Since 1999, the Titans have captured 14 of the 20 championships (12 outright, 2 shared).

• Cal State Fullerton returns to the post-season after advancing to its 18th College World Series a season ago. It marked the fourth consecutive year the conference has sent a team to Omaha - UC Irvine (2014), Cal State Fullerton (2015), UC Santa Bar-bara (2016) and Cal State Fullerton (2017).

• The Big West has sent at least one team to the Super Regionals 14 out of the last 15 years. The 2012 season was the lone year where the Big West was not represented at the Super Regionals.

• Since 2000 the Big West Conference has posted a 142-98 (.592) record in the NCAA Tournament, which includes 20 Super Re-gional appearances, nine College World Series participants and one national cham-pion (Cal State Fullerton, 2004).

• The Big West has had two baseball National Championships, with both of them claimed by the Cal State Fullerton Titans (1995, 2004). The other two titles the Titans earned in 1979 and 1984 were when they were competing in the Southern California Baseball Association (SCBA). In all, the conference has sent five different teams to the College World Series - Cal State Fullerton, former member Fresno State (1988, 1991), Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.

NCAA Tournament

• The Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads the way with 10 teams selected, while the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has six participants in the field. The Big 12 Conference have five participants in the field followed by the American Ath-letic Conference, Big Ten Conference and Pac-12 Conference with four each in the field. The other multiple bid conferences: Atlantic Sun, Colonial Athletic Association, Conference USA, Missouri Valley Confer-ence, Ohio Valley Conference and Sun Belt Conference, all have two teams each.

• Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination for-mat. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4 (if necessary). Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on www.NCAA.com/cws, Tuesday, June 5 at approximately 5:00 a.m. (PT).

• There are 31 Division I conferences which will receive an automatic berth in the field of 64, along with 33 at-large selec-tions. The 72nd Men’s College World Se-ries begins play Saturday, June 16, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Neb.

• The Big West has enjoyed a tradition of representation at the College World Se-ries. In fact, at least one Big West school has reached Omaha 19 times. Fullerton brought home the Big West’s first national title in 1995 and then brought home a sec-ond in 2004.

Cal State Fullerton

• The 2018 season marks the 40th year the Titans have competed in the NCAA Region-als - 32nd as a Big West member. It was also the 27th consecutive year Cal State Fullerton has received a postseason berth, marking the second-longest active consec-utive streak in the nation behind and Florida State (41 years).

• For the season straight year, Cal State Fullerton is headed to Stanford for Region-al action. This year, as the No. 3 seed, the Titans join host and No. 1-seeded Stanford, No. 2 Baylor and No. 4 Wright State. It marks the fourth time the Titans will have played a regional at Stanford. The Titans (32-23) open the Regional against Baylor (36-19) Friday, June 1 at 2:00 pm (PT), while Stanford (44-10) takes on Wright State (39-15) in game two of the doubleheader at 7:00 pm. Cal State Ful-lerton is 8-4 against the Bears and swept the last series between the two teams in 2015. The Cardinal, who swept Cal State Fullerton to open 2018, owns a 45-60 edge over the Titans in the all-time series while the Titans and Raiders have never met on the Diamond. The victor of the Stanford Regional advances to the Super Regional where it is slated to face the Coastal Carolina Regional Champion, which also features Washington, UConn and LIU Brooklyn.

• Last year at the Stanford Regional, Cal State Fullerton ran the table as the No. 2 seed. The Titans opened Regional play with a 13-2 win over BYU before downing Stanford in two straight contests, 4-1 and 4-2, to advance to the Super Regionals for the 13th time.

• Overall, the Titans have won 22 regional titles – including a national best 12 on the road (two each in Fresno and Baton Rouge and one each at USC, Austin, Starkville, Stillwater, South Bend, Stanford, Tempe and San Diego). Prior to 2000, the Titans had never hosted a Regional.

• The Titans have never gone winless in regional play, the only program with 38-plus appearances (eight programs total) to do so. They have gone 0-2 only twice in a Super Regional (2008 & 2013) and seven times in Omaha (1975, 1982, 1990, 2007, 2009, 2015, and 2017). • Cal State Fullerton’s all-time NCAA re-cord is 157-86 including Regional (103-43) and Super Regionals (20-12) play and a 34-31record in Omaha.

• The Titans have won four National Titles (1979, 1984, 1995, 2004).

Big West Tid Bits

• Titans Capture Another Title: Cal State Fullerton claimed its 22nd Big West regular season championship with an 18-6 mark. In earning the Big West’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, CSF qualified for postseason for the 40th time in program history – and will be making its 27th straight NCAA appearance. The Titans are headed to the Stanford Regional where they will join The Cardinal, Baylor and Wright State.

• Historical Significance: Cal State Fullerton’s domi-nance continues with the 2018 trophy in possession. Since 1999, the Titans have captured 14 of the 20 champi-onships (12 outright, 2 shared).

• Versus the Nation: Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State are tied for 18th in shutouts with six...Cal Poly sits at 25th in the country with 577 hits...CSUN’s 65 home runs this season is tied for 24th-best in the country and is the most by a Big West squad since Cal State Fullerton also tallied 65 in 2010...CSUN’s Albee Weiss is fourth in the NCAA with 20 bombs and cracked the school’s all-time single-season top 10 list...Long Beach State’s Clayton Andrews is the na-tion’s toughest to strike out...as a pitcher, Andrews leads the league and is tied for No. 16 nationally with 118 strikeouts...UC Irvine’s Andre Pallante is 23rd nationally with 115 strike-outs...Pallante also sports the nation’s seventh-lowest ERA (1.60)...Hawai'i closer Dylan Thomas ranks 11th with 14 saves...UH’s Johnny Weeks has laid down 22 sac bunts this year to rank No. 2 in the country.

• Weiss’ Stellar Season: All-Big West First Team selec-tion Albee Weiss finished the regular season fourth in the nation in home runs (20) and 25th in total bases (141). He led the Big West in homers, total bases, RBI (61) and slug-ging percentage (.592). Weiss became the 10th Matador in team history to hit 20 home runs in a season and the first since 1997. In the Matador record books, Weiss finished tied with John Balfanz (1985-87) for third place in CSUN’s all-time home run list with 42. In the team’s Division I era, Weiss is second in homers, behind only Adam Kennedy (1995-97). Weiss also moved up to a fifth place tie with Jason Shanahan (1992-95) on the school’s RBI list with 153. His efforts helped guide CSUN to a tie for third place in conference, the program’s best finish since 2002.

• UC Irvine head baseball coach Mike Gillespie’s illustrious career came to an end last week. He will be replaced by associate head coach Ben Orloff. Since joining UC Irvine in 2008, Gillespie has amassed 393 wins. Under Gil-lespie’s guidance, UC Irvine made five trips to the NCAA postseason, including a College World Series (2014), the year he was named NCBWA Coach of the Year.

• Last Thursday against UC Irvine, UC Davis’ Caleb Van Blake earned three free passes (first, fifth, and seventh innings) to tie the Division I era record for single-game walks, logging three on the afternoon--one shy of the all-time program record.
