Big West News & Notes

UC Santa Barbara Goes for Record Sixth Title: UC Santa Barbara is after a bit of history this season as the league’s preseason favorite among the coaches is looking for its sixth conference crown all-time. The Gauchos are tied currently tied with former league member Fresno State for the most crowns all-time. Since the reinstatement of men’s soccer in 2001, UC Santa Barbara has won the Big West title in four of the seven seasons leading into 2008. Cal State Northridge is the only school other than UCSB to win the conference crown in that time frame.

Heavyweights Dot Big West Schedule: Mix a few emerging clubs, some established powers and a national champion and you have the ingredients for a challenging schedule. The Big West will take on a litany of nationally-recognized programs in 2008, affirming the league as one of the top men’s soccer conferences in the country. On the ledger for 2008 are regional giants California, UCLA, San Diego and San Diego State as well as Gonzaga, Creighton, Washington, Indiana, Bradley, Portland, Denver, New Mexico and defending national champion Wake Forest. Add in a conference race which promises to be one of the tightest in recent memory and 2008 could prove to be a banner year for the Big West Conference.

Tournament Play Awaits Four Big West Clubs: The 2008 season has a few changes in the schedule as the Big West will sponsor a tournament in men’s soccer for the first time. The tourney will feature the top four teams in the standings following the regular season with the top two clubs hosting the semifinal round. The regular season champion hosts the fourth-place finisher, while the second place team takes on the third place finisher with both games taking place on Wednesday, November 12. The winners will meet on Saturday, November 15 with the highest remaining seed hosting the championship match. The tournament also cuts down the regular season league schedule from 12 matches to 10. Now a team will play four league opponents twice and the remaining two clubs once.

Dotting the Rankings: A trio of Big West clubs appear in the various preseason polls entering the 2008 campaign. Two-time defending league champion and 2006 NCAA king UC Santa Barbara appears at #9 in the College Soccer News poll, tied for #21 in the NSCAA, #10 in Soccer Times and xx in Soccer America. 2007 NCAA participant UC Davis checks in at #30 in College Soccer News, while upstart Cal Poly is #24 in College Soccer News. The three clubs are also 1-2-3 in the Big West preseason coaches poll, possibly foreshadowing what could be a tight race among the three for the top spot in the conference.

Pontius Reaps Preseason Praise: UC Santa Barbara senior midfielder Chris Pontius has claimed national attention from a number of outlets prior to the 2008 season.

Pontius was named a third team preseason All-America by College Soccer News as well as being one of the publication’s “Players to Watch” this season. Pontius also claimed one of the highest preseason honors in collegiate soccer as he was named to the 2008 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List. The list, which is complied by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSAA), is the preseason edition of the race for the collegiate player of the year award, while the trophy is considered the most prestigious honor a collegiate soccer player can win.

All-Stars Returning to the Pitch: Despite all the new faces around the league, 11 of the 24 players named to the 2007 Big West first and second teams return to the pitch in 2008. Of the first teamers, UC Santa Barbara returns a pair in Chris Pontius, the 2007 Big West Offensive Player of the Year, and Alfonso Motagalvan, while Cal Poly claimed the other first team all-star in David Zamora, the 2007 Big West Freshman of the Year. Three clubs tied for the most second team All-Conference players as UC Davis (Quincy Amarikwa and Sule Anibaba), Cal State Northridge (Rafael Garcia and Kevin Guppy) and UC Irvine (Matt Murphy and David Sias) each return two players apiece. Cal Poly (Kyle Montgomery) and UC Riverside (David Lozano) also return 2007 second team All-Big West selection. As for the returning award winners, only Pontius and Zamora hit the pitch in 2008.

Can’t Be There? Tune In: Two intriguing primetime matches involving Big West clubs will be on Fox Soccer Channel this season, one an intersectional battle and the other a budding conference rivalry. The first is the Kentucky/UC Santa Barbara tilt Friday, September 5 at 8 p.m., at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, while the second pits the Gauchos against Cal Poly in Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo. The UK/UCSB matchup will mark the first time the two programs have met on the soccer pitch. Meanwhile, the UCSB/CP match promises to have the Central Coast abuzz as last year’s game in Spanos Stadium, a 2-1 Mustang win, produced the second-highest single game attendance in conference history at 7,143.

Nationally-Renown Freshman Hit the Pitch: After a season in which first year players such as Cal Poly’s David Zamora, Cal State Northridge’s Camilo Rojas and Rafael Garcia and UC Santa Barbara’s Bryant Rueckner played key roles for their clubs, a new crop of freshman players will look to make their mark. Leading the brigade are Parade All-Americans and UCSB signees Danny Barrera and Bryan Dominguez, while Cal State Fullerton made a splash on the recruiting scene with prep phenom Michael Denny. The trio is among the top 100 incoming freshman in the country according to College Soccer News. The same publication also ranked UCSB’s class sixth overall, while UC Irvine made a splash on the recruiting landscape with a #40 ranking.

l Cal Poly comes into the 2008 season looking to continue the momentum of its best season as a member of the Big West. The Mustangs went 11-4-4 overall and 6-2-4 in the Big West, the most overall and conference wins that Cal Poly has posted in its tenure in the conference. The 11 wins also tied the best single-season output in the Mustangs’ Division I era, while the six conference wins marked the first time Cal Poly has won more than three conference matches in DI.

l After having just two players score three or more goals in 2006, the Cal Poly offense was much more formidible in 2007 as it boasted five players who scored four or more goals, all of which return to the pitch in 2008. The group is led by freshman All-America, 2007 league Freshman of the Year and first team All-Big West choice sophomore David Zamora (6 g, 5 a) and second team All-Conference selection sophomore Kyle Montgomery (6 g, 3 a). The offense will also receive a boost from senior Julian Alvarez (6 g), junior Daniel Cumming (5 g, 2 a) and sophomore Daniel Gray (4 g). The quintent was respondsible for 27 of the 33 goals by the Mustangs last season.

l Cal Poly’s defense was a tough unit to score on as the Mustangs allowed a league-low 21 goals in 19 matches and ranked second in the Big West in goals against average (1.05). Returning to anchor the defensive effort are junior Josh Didion and sophomore Anton Peterlin, while junior Jeremy Cleveland and freshmen Steven Marshall and Derrick Brown will be counted on to provide depth. Between the pipes is one of the top netminders in the Big West in senior Eric Branagan-Franco. The two-year starter posted

league-bests in goals against average (0.90) and shutouts (9). His 0.87 career goals against average is the sixth-best figure in conference history.

l The Cal Poly resurgence can be best seen in the attendance at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The Mustangs ranked 10th in the NCAA with an average crowd of 2,092, while coming in at 11th in total attendance at 20,918. Included in that figure was a program-best 7,143 spectators for Cal Poly’s win over UC Santa Barbara, the second-highest single-game regular season attendance figure in conference history.

Titan Headers

l Cal State Fullerton faces another chapter in its resurgence after posting back-to-back seven-win campaigns in head coach Bob Ammann’s first two years on the sidelines. The 2008 edition of the Titan men’s soccer program will have plenty of new faces as they have a league-high 23 newcomers to go along with 11 returning letterwinners and five returning starters.

l CSF’s offense will need some retooling as it returns just nine goals, three assists and 21 points this season. The Titans do have a proven commod-ity returning to the pitch in 2007 leading scorer junior Shay Spitz. He accounts for five of the goals, one assist and 11 points among the returnees. Aside from Spitz, only senior Jacob Shumway (2 g, 1 a) tallied multiple goals in 2008 so finding more offensive firepower for a unit that scored just 1.15 goals per outing will be key. Among the newcom-ers, Michael Denny, a top 100 recruit according to College Soccer News, and Deniz Sevinc will be counted on to provide offensive punch. Sevinc turned down a professional contract in his native Germany to sign with the Titans.

l The Titans improved their defensive output last season from 2007 as they allowed five less goals and posted a 1.49 goals against average after a 1.82 result the prior season. CSF returns key defenders in junior Matt Sanders and sophomore T.J. Detviler who combined for 34 games and 31 starts between them last season. The backline also received depth in newcomers Jonathan Birt, Mark Nelson and Colgate transfer Justin Burney, who played in 14 matches with five starts for the 2007 Patriot League champions.

l The goalkeeping for Cal State Fullerton last season was much improved, but with the loss of Brent Douglas, the Titans need to fill the hole in their last line of defense. The leading candidates are returnees Kevin Puder, a senior, and sophomore Tyler Andrews, both of whom saw action while Douglas was in-jured. Andrews posted a 2.20 goals against average and collected 15 saves in five matches with three starts, while Puder had a 2.81 goals against average and made 18 saves in five matches with three starts. Also in the competition will be freshmen Chris Quaresma, Trevor Whiddon and Pablo Gonzalez.

Matador Headers

l Cal State Northridge comes into 2008 looking to reclaim its place among the elite in the Big West. CSUN went just 7-7-6 overall and 3-5-4 in conference play, posting its lowest overall win total and the most ties as a member of the Big West. The Matadors will be one of the most experiences clubs in the conference as nine starters and 16 letterwinners return looking to lead the team back to the familiar confines of the NCAA Tournament.

l Offensively, Cal State Northridge struggled to find the back of the net in 2007. The Matadors managed just 1.20 goals per outing (24 g in 20 games), but possess the kind of talent that can improve that statistic in 2008. Junior Sunghyun Kim (4 g, 3 a), senior Devin Deldo (4 g, 3 a) and sophomore Camilo Rojas (4 g, 1 a) will be counted on for even greater production this season. Aside from that three headed monster, 2007 second team All-Big West selection Rafael Garcia (2 g, 2 a), a sophomore and junior Adrian Lopez (1 a) have shown the ability to be excellent offensive threats.

l The biggest question facing Cal State Northridge is who will replace a talented duo of first team All-Big West defenders in Matt Tracy and 2007 MLS SuperDraft selection Sean Franklin, who was taken fourth overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Head coach Terry Davila has a deep pool of talent to choose from for his backline in seniors Bo Miller and Ben Cox as well as junior Robert Pate. All three defenders played at least 19 matches a year ago, helping the Matador defense surrender just 23 goals, tied for second-fewest in the Big West. Look for talented midfielders Nicholas Hamilton, a sophomore, as well as senior Ben Cox, junior Dylan Riley and freshman Joseph Franco to figure

heavily in the defensive plans.

l If you need one constant in the Matador program the previous three seasons, look no further than senior goalkeeper Kevin Guppy. The three-year starter has been in net for 60 of CSUN’s 61 matches during his career, with all of those appearances coming in the starting lineup. A year ago, Guppy posted a 1.09 goals against average and finished second in the Big West in saves (76) and shutouts (8). On the Big West career charts, Guppy ranks fifth in shutouts (19), seventh in goals against average (0.96), fourth in wins (30) and tied for fifth matches in goal.

Aggie Headersl UC Davis made a seamless transition to Division I a year ago as Dwayne Shaffer’s troops went 12-5-3 and finished second in the Big West with a 7-3-2 mark. The Aggies were extended an at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament for their efforts, but lost in a tough first round match to Pac-10 champion California in double overtime. UCD returns seven starters and 17 letterwinners from that historic club as it looks to win its first league championship in its short DI era.

l The UC Davis offense was a prolific outfit in 2007 as it led the Big West and ranked ninth in the NCAA with 2.20 goals per outing (44 g in 20 matches). The 2008 club has a chance to once again be a prolific offensive outfit as six of the seven players who scored three or more goals return to the collegiate pitch. The returnees are led by senior Sule Anibaba, an expert marksman who ranked third in the conference with eight goals and scored on five penalty kick opportunities. Joining the goal-scoring barrage are senior Quincy Amarikwa (5 g, 2 a), juniors Paul Marcoux (5 g, 3 a) and super sub Chris Leer (5 g, 2 a) as well as seniors Ian Conklin (4 g, 4 a) and Dylan Curtis (3 g, 3 a). The group gives the Aggies the deepest pool of returning offensive threats in the Big West.

l The UC Davis defense was a tale of two seasons a year ago as the Aggies allowed two or more goals in six of their first 11 matches, then gave up two or more tallies in only three of their final nine outings. The backline lost some key personnel in Paul Cain and Matt Slagle, but returns stout defenders in seniors Dan Campbell, Jordan Vanderpoorten and Jake Mogelson. Shaffer can also turn to redshirt fresman Nate Jarman, sophomores

Nathan Javadi and Chris Beville as well as heralded recruit Lance Patterson, the first out-of-state signee in Shaffer’s tenure with the Aggies.

l The Aggies had a tag team effort in goal last season with Brian Wickers and Ryan McCown, but with the graduation of Wickers, McCown stands alone in goal this season. A year ago, the sophomore posted a 1.22 goals against average, which was sixth in the Big West, and collected 25 saves. Finding a backup will be a priority for Shaffer as McCown was the only keeper on UCD’s spring roster.

Anteater Headers

l UC Irvine started with a 5-1-2 mark a year ago, but struggled with injuries and inconsistency down the stretch as the Anteaters finished 6-9-5 overall and just 1-8-3 in the Big West. UCI has strong hopes for a rebound as five starters and 14 letterwinners aim to mesh with nine talented newcomers in 2008.

The recruiting class, ranked #40 in the country by College Soccer News, is a nice compliment to the Anteaters’ stellar collection of sophomore and junior talent.

l Offensively, UC Irvine is led by 2007 second team All-Big West selection, 2006 Midfielder of the year and All-America candidate, Matt Murphy. A year ago he led the club in goals (9) and points (20), his second straight 20-point season and the lone Anteater to collect double-digit points. Head coach George Kuntz will look for more offense from a pair of talented sophomores in Spencer Thompson (4 g, 1 a) and Amani Walker (3 g, 1 a) as well as senior Shane Westbrook (2 g, 4 a). Add in the talents of newcomers Carlos Aguilar, Irving Garcia and Norberto Rodriguez and the Anteaters will boast a diverse and creative attack that rivals any in the conference.

l UCI can certainly score, but will need to improve on the 31 goals it allowed last season to return to the upper echelon of the Big West. The improvement of the backline in 2008 is led by a couple of seniors in 2007 second team All-Conference selection David Sias and Kyle Schmid. Fellow seniors Rafael Macedo and Westbrook, sophomores Indar Smith and Gray Bailey as well

as junior Eric Shuffle also look to cut down the opponent attack this season. Keep an eye on heralded recruit Everett Pitts, a 6-2 defender who has matched favorably up against top forwards throughout his prep and club career.

l After entering 2007 with no experienced goalkeepers, UC Irvine found a steady performer in sophomore Pat Barton. He ranked fifth in the Big West in save percentage (.708), saves (51) and tied for fifth in shutouts (3) to go along with a 1.35 goals against average. With the loss of Barton’s backup Greg Larson, head coach George Kuntz brought in three newcomers in freshmen Elmer Avelar and Andrew Fontein and junior college transfer Victor Chinchilla. Look for one of those players to push for playing time once the pecking order is established following training camp.

Highlander Headers

l UC Riverside may have equaled its win total from 2006 a year ago, but the Highlanders showed marked improvement by cutting down their losses from 11 in ‘06 to 6 last season, while posting a league-record eight ties. Expect even more improvement from UCR in 2008 as it returns seven starters and 11 letterwinners from a group that played in Big West high 16 one-goal affairs.

l In order to turn some of those ties into more wins, UC Riverside will need greater offensive numbers in 2008. The Highlanders, who scored just 22 goals and don’t return a player who tallied double-digit points last season, will need greater offensive dividends from its returning scorers. Leading that group is two-time honorable mention All-Big West selection junior Nathan Paterson (3 g, 2 a) and classmate Zach Walker (3 g, 2 a) who each tallied eight points a year ago. Add in Joel Crompton (3 g, 0 a) and the trio accounts for nine of the 12 returnee goals, four of the nine returnee assists and 22 of the 33 returnee points. Finding more offense is paramount to UCR’s climb to the upper echelon of the Big West.

l While questions surround the UC Riverside offense, the defense was one of the most stout units in the conference. The Highlanders allowed just 23 goals last season, tying for second in the conference, and ranked fourth in goals against average at 1.10. 2007 second team All-Big West choice junior David Lozano leads the stingy UCR defense, while Crompton, and fellow seniors Aaron Hunter and David Watson give the Highlanders exceptional depth and experience on the backline.

Junior Jeff Mowdy and sophomore Joshua Kelly will also figure in the rotation for the UCR defensive unit.

lThe biggest loss for UC Riverside is in net, where four-year starter Charles Alamo departs after setting virtually every goalkeeping mark in Highlander history. The only returning keeper with any experience is sophomore Ryan Schmitz, who’s only appearence was in the second half of the 2007 opener against Central Arkansas. He will battle incoming freshman Alex Abelson for the starting position in net.

Gaucho Headersl UC Santa Barbara was unable to defend its national championship a year ago, but the Gauchos still turned in a spectacular season. UCSB finished the year 13-4-4 overall, won its fifth Big West championship with a 9-1-2 mark, earned the #12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and finished as high as #8 in the final polls. The Gauchos will be gunning for another memorable season with a group of five returning starters, 11 returning letterwinners and a 17-man recruiting class ranked #6 in the country by College Soccer News.

l UCSB faces a rebuilding task on the offensive end, but has a solid foundation of talent to build upon. The headliner is 2007 Big West Offensive Player of the Year senior Chris Pontius (11 g, 2 a), the league’s top returning scorer with 24 points. The first team All-Conference choice is aided by another first teamer in senior Alfonso Motagalvan (5 g, 4 a), 2006 College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player senior Nick Perera (3 g, 1 a) and the return of redshirt sophomore Bongomin Otii, a second team All-Big West selection in 2006. The crown jewels of the Gaucho recruiting class should make the losses even easier to bear as freshman Danny Barrera, Bryan Dominguez and Reid Fraser as well as sophomore UCLA transfer Kyle McAthy, the brother of former Gaucho great Drew McAthy, should figure heavily in the UCSB attack.

l For the first time since 2003, the UC Santa Barbara backline will not have the talents of Andy Iro, who took his game to the professional ranks. Despite the loss, UCSB has plenty in reserve on the backline in juniors Jon Curry and David Walker,

rugged sophomore Michael Boxall and senior Kyle Kaveny. All four players saw extensive time a year ago so the normally stout Gaucho defense should not suffer any letdown in 2008. Keep an eye on sophomore Jonathan Zerah and heralded recruits Tim Pontius, the younger brother of Chris Pontius, Peter McGlynn and Michael Tetteh as they could also see time on the UCSB backline.

l After entering 2007 without an established goalkeeper for the first time in his tenure, head coach Tim Vom Steeg is going through a bit of déjà vu as he enters 2008 without a goalkeeper with collegiate experience. A pair of 6-4 keepers will battle for the starting gig as redshirt freshman Kristopher Minton and true freshman Trond Helge Tasket hope to don the starter’s jersey for the opener against Air Force.

A Look Back at the 2007 Big West Men’s Soccer Season The eagerly anticipated 2007 Big West men’s soccer campaign didn’t disappoint as the league reached new highs both in and out of conference.

The conference went an impressive 31-15-9 against non-conference foes, which included a 3-5-4 mark against teams ranked in any of the four major polls at the time

of the match. The strength of the conference was evident on the national scale as six of the seven league schools were in the RPI top 100 entering the NCAA Tournament.

UC Santa Barbara’s appearance in the Sweet 16 also marked the fifth straight season a Big West school had reached the round of 16 in the national tournament.

Conference play was especially fierce as five clubs recorded double-digit points in the first season of the 12-match league campaign. That’s the highest figure since

2003 when all six Big West clubs recorded double-digit points. This also marks the first time that five schools recorded 12 or more points in conference play. UCSB’s 29

points surpassed the 2002 Gaucho club for the most in league history. It should be noted however, that the 2002 mark came during the course of a 10-match conference

schedule.

UC Santa Barbara entered the season with a bulls-eye on its back as the defending national champion, but the Gauchos’ play didn’t disappoint. UCSB won its fifth

Big West title in seven seasons and was awarded a #12 seed in the national tournament. The Gauchos reached the Sweet 16 before suffering an emotional loss in double

overtime to fifth seed Ohio State on the road. Despite the disappointing finish, UC Santa Barbara had plenty to be proud of as the Gauchos tied a league record with nine

conference wins, won three major Big West awards, placed seven players on the All-Big West first team and set a league record for single-match attendance when 8,102

showed up to Harder Stadium for match against Cal Poly November 3.

The surprise of the season came from a newbie as UC Davis completed its reclassification and became the ninth member of the Big West Conference. The Aggies,

who were picked to finish sixth in the seven-team conference, far exceeded expectations with a 12-5-3 record and a 7-3-2 mark in Big West play. UCD was honored for

its efforts with an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, an excellent accomplishment for a program in its inagural season of Division I play. To no one’s surprise, head

coach Dwayne Shaffer was named the Big West Coach of the Year.

Despite not receving an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, Cal Poly wrapped up a tremendous season which saw them go 6-2-4 in conference play and 11-

4-4 overall. The conference and overall victories are the most the Mustangs have registered as a member of the Big West, while the 11 overall triumphs tied the program

record for wins set in 1999. Cal Poly drew extremely well in the Central Coast region as an average of 2,092 fans came out to support Mustang soccer. The high attendance

of 7,143 against UC Santa Barbara October 17 is the second-highest attendance figure in Big West history.

Big West Record BookALL-TIME STANDINGS

In 1992, the Big West joined the Western Athletic Conference and the Pacific-10 Conference to establish a federated conference - the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Therefore, Big West men’s soccer standings and All-Big West Teams concluded its records at the end of the 1991 season.

In 2001, the Big West had enough teams to sponsor a championship in men’s soccer, thus bringing back the sport after a nine-year hiatus.
