who are members/$5.00 for non-members or those 50 to 59. Please check the activity calendar
for dates and times; although it is usually on a Friday at 12:00 p.m. Just walk in.

Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville. Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines
stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower
blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website). The cost of a 10
week-session is $65/$55, if you are a member of the Senior Center. Registration and payment
are due before the classes start. Participants can opt into a session at any time and payment

Congregate Meals: The Monday through Friday
Congregate Meals are a very important service
provided by your Senior Center and the Office of
Aging and Community Services. Meals must be
ordered by noon one business day in advance. So,
if you call in the morning of your scheduled meal to
cancel due to a non-medical issue or you do not
show, you are responsible for the full purchase of
your ordered meal which is $4.44. Failure to con-
tact us that you are not coming results in a meal
that can not be served and puts the staff in a di-
lemma trying to get someone to eat the ordered
meal. Lastly, review your order with staff the week
before to confirm that your order is recorded for the
following week.
Cinema Friday Movie, Root Beer Floats
& Popcorn
Come out and join your friends at the Big Spring
Senior Center and watch a blockbuster movie on
January 24th and February 21st from 1 p.m. to 3
p.m. We are asking for a $2 donation to cover the
cost of the floats and popcorn.
Wii Bowling:
Check out Wii Bowling Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m.
This game is limited to four players, so signups
are necessary.
The Thrill of Las Vegas comes to the Big Spring Senior Center
Bob Ballard has a new and thrilling game that he is introducing at the Senior Center.
It’s called “Las Vegas” and is fun and competitive.
No cash will be exchanged; just laughs and giggles.
This game will be played at the Senior Center beginning at 12:45 p.m.
the first Friday of the month.
Mark your calendars for January 3rd and February 7th and join Bob.
Special Programs
Water Color Painting Opportunity: Mondays at 2 p.m. at the Center. Do you have an interest in
water coloring? It takes space, inspiration and motivation, and we can help. Join our friendly group of
painters with our new instructor, Kathleen Schungel, a retired art teacher of Cumberland Valley School
District and a Big Spring resident. The cost is $1/week to the Big Spring Senior Center and $5/week to
the instructor.
Crafts: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. at the Center. We could use your help, hands and ideas. Come and
make beaded jewelry, seasonal and everyday crafts, as well as new friends. Just walk in.
Bible Study: Every Wednesday in January and February at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Molly Haggerty of
the Big Spring Lutheran and Zion Lutheran Churches of Newville will provide the study. The theme for
January is Relationships: God Breaks into the Breakups, and for February: What’s Love Got to Do
With It? A list of the texts and dates to read them is available at the Senior Center.
Games at the Center: Lots of opportunities to play cards and games can be found at the Senior Cen-
ter. On Thursday at 9:30 a.m., we play 500 with a dedicated group of card players, and we are always
looking for new players. Come play Corn Hole, Shuffleboard, Ladder Ball and board games on Thurs-
day at 12:30 p.m. Bob Ballard or Bill & Linda Sweigart are our leaders. Don’t ever consider playing
games as frivolous; studies show that it stimulates your brain, which helps counter the aging process.
Game Night is Tuesday, January 28th and February 25th beginning at 6 p.m.
Mind Matters:—A Distinctive Approach to Learning: WITF, Central Pennsylvania’s affiliate for
PBS and NPR, is offering an exciting initiative for Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) Senior
Community Centers and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) by providing highly-
engaging educational programming. The project, called Mind Matters, delivers a monthly series of
intellectually stimulating lectures by knowledgeable presenters on topics of most interest to older
adults. Our Senior Center is offering on Wednesday, January 15th at 9:30 a.m.: Weather Wise:
Prepare and Be Safe—Jeff Jumper is the state meteorologist for the Pennsylvania Emergen-
cy Management Agency. Since 2015, Jeff has worked to better prepare the Agency and its
stakeholders for weather hazards through forecasts, outreach, partnerships, and training.
Previously, Jeff spent nearly a decade as a broadcast meteorologist in Pennsylvania, Ala-
bama, and Louisiana. Winter weather provides challenges for all Pennsylvanians, but as
we age it can get tougher to deal with what Mother Nature has to offer during the cold sea-
son. This MindMatters will cover some of Pennsylvania’s winter weather hazards and pro-
vide some preparedness and safety tips to help you through the winter.
Wednesday, February 19th at 9:30 a.m.: Famous Pennsylvania Politicians of the 20th Centu-
ry— In the 20th century, many Pennsylvania politicians gained national recognition. Gifford
Pinchot was the first Chief of the United States Forest Service, and his wife, Cornelia, was a
three-time candidate for U.S. Congress; Governor Bill Scranton served as United States Am-
bassador to the United Nations, and his mother, Marion Margery Scranton, played key roles
in national Republican Party politics; Governor Robert P. Casey became nationally known
for his pro-life view; and, Governor Tom Ridge became the first United States Secretary of
Homeland Security. Dr. Wolensky will explore the biographies of these and other well-known
20th century Pennsylvania politicians. Dr. Ken Wolensky is a published writer and histori-
an. He is President of The Pennsylvania Historical Association.

Out with the Old & In with the New
As much as we look forward to the joy of the
holiday season, it becomes overwhelming with
feelings of pressure, disappointment, or unhappiness. Now that
we have entered into a new year we can:
Take Action— Don’t sit and mope or isolate yourself. Call someone
and go out or invite a friend in to see you. Don’t wait for others to meet
your needs. Reach out when you feel like brooding. Try to contact
someone with whom you have lost touch...it may make his or her day! Call
the Elder Helpline listed in your phone book, your church, synagogue or senior
center to find out resources if you are unable to leave your home or need help in
connecting with others.
Inform Others of Your Needs & Desires—No one can read your mind. Inform others
of your preferences, needs, and desires. Asking for and accepting help can relieve you of a
heavy burden.
Focus on the Positive—Emphasize what is good, not what is missing. Reflect on the
good things that have happened in you life.
Get Some Exercise—Exercise raises your energy levels and helps fight off depression. If
you exercise (weather permitting), natural sunlight will give you a boost.
Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something New or Different— Experiment with new recipes,
sign-up for an interesting course, join a club, or attend a craft project.
Enjoy Activities that are Free— Go window-shopping without buying anything, attend
local school concerts and plays, visit your local senior center for programming
opportunities.
Be Realistic— You cannot feel happy, grateful and joyful throughout every moment
of the year. It is not natural. What is natural is the ebb and flow of feelings from one
moment to the next. Do not be paralyzed by those inevitable moments of sadness,
fatigue or anxiety or let them throw you off course. Just take these feelings along
with you for the ride like you are carrying a bag of groceries, and remember,
you have a choice to put down your bag!
Congrats to our Project
