Step 2 - ApplyingWHEN TO APPLY

You can start to complete your online application for 2013 from as early as June2012. There are some important dates you need to think about:

Early September 2012 Opening date for receiving applications at UCAS.

15 October 2012 Application deadline for UCAS to receive applications for allmedicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and veterinary science courses and for allcourses at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

15 January 2013 Final date for applications from UK and EU applicants to beguaranteed equal academic consideration. Most universities and colleges willconsider applications from non-EU applicants after this date (but not normally foranything that has a 15 October deadline) but some may not. You should look atthe university websites to find out if you need to apply by 15 January.

25 February 2013 Extra starts. See step 3 for information about Extra.

30 June 2013 Final application deadline. Any applications received after this datego into Clearing. See step 5 for information about Clearing.

Remember, many universities accept applications from international students at anytime of the year. It is not essential to follow all of these dates, but if you can it willhelp ensure that you have the best chance of being considered.

    HOW TO APPLY

You apply online atwww.ucas.com through Apply, our secure, web-basedapplication service that is designed for applicants anywhere in the world, whetheryou are applying through a school, college, British Council office or agent. Apply is:

Easy to access all you need is an internet connection.

Easy to use you dont have to complete your application all at once. You cansave the sections as you complete them and come back to your application later. As you complete each section, you can click on a help button for guidance onentering the information.

Easy to monitor once you have applied, you can use our online Track serviceat www.ucas.com to check the progress of your application, including anydecisions from universities and colleges. You can also reply to your offers usingTrack.

You can only make one application in each years application cycle.

Students may apply on their own or through their school, college, adviser, or localBritish Council if they are registered with UCAS to use Apply. If you choose to use aneducation agents services when applying to UK universities, check with your localBritish Council to see if they hold a list of certificated or registered agents in yourcountry.

While an agents advice may be helpful, it is important that you complete theapplication yourself and make sure you enter your home address. Always check whatan agent may charge you and what that covers. You should make sure that anycontract you sign with your agent allows you to have access to the login details foryour application.

    HOW MANY CHOICES?

You can apply for up to five different courses on the one application. If you areapplying for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or veterinary science, you canapply for only four courses in any one of these subjects. You can still have fivechoices altogether.

    UNIVERSITIES OF OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE

You can apply to only one course at either the University of Oxford or the University ofCambridge. You cannot apply to both universities.

The only exception to this is if you will be a graduate at the start of the course andare applying for the course code A101 (graduate medicine) at the University ofCambridge. Then you can also apply to course code A100 (medicine) at Cambridge,in addition to being able to apply to course code A101 (graduate medicine) at theUniversity of Oxford.

HOW MUCH WILL THE APPLICATION COST?

If you apply to more than one course, university or college, the cost is 23 for the2013 entry application cycle. If you apply to only one course at one university orcollege, you pay 12.

    HOW TO PAY

If you are making your application through your school, college or other centre, they

let you know how to pay. It will usually be either by credit or debit card online or bypaying your centre, which will then pay us. If you are not making your applicationthrough your school, college or centre, you will need to make your payment on Applyusing a credit or debit card. The card need not be in your own name, but you willrequire the consent of the cardholder. If you use a credit or debit card that you do nothave permission to use, we will cancel your application. If you have any difficultieswith payment, please contact us. A link to our details are in theHow can I find outmore about UCAS and applying? section at the end of this guide.

    QUALIFICATIONS

When filling out your application, youmust give full details of all qualifications you havealready gained or are currently taking, including exams you took when you left school, exams you took to get into higher education, vocational exams and any otherqualifications or awards. You must also list your highest level of qualification in thissection. You will find a picklist of qualifications in Apply. You cannot paste transcriptsinto the qualifications fields. You must enter the information for each qualificationseparately. You should always check the suitability of your qualifications with theadmissions offices at the universities and colleges where you intend to apply. Each onewill decide whether or not your qualifications meet, or could meet, their entryrequirements for the courses you are interested in. When you apply, pleasedo not tryto give a UK equivalent for your qualifications. If your first language is not English, youshould:

say whether or not your qualifications were completely or partly assessed inEnglish in the personal statement section of your application

enter details for any English language tests you have taken or plan to take suchas IELTS, ESOL, TOEFL.

    YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT

Your personal statement is part of the application and gives you the chance to telluniversities and colleges why they should want you as a student. Admissions officerswill want to know why you are interested in the courses for which you have appliedand what you hope to do after your studies. A good personal statement is important -it could help to persuade an admissions officer to offer you a place. In many cases, applicants are not interviewed, so this may be your only chance to make the case foryour admission. Additional information to include might be:

why you want to study in the UK

evidence to show that you can complete a higher education course that is taughtin English

positions of leadership you have had or ways you have used your communicationskills

any preparation you have done for the course to which you are applying.

To ensure that universities and colleges get to know you as an applicant, make surethat your personal statement is your own work. This is what UK universities andcolleges want to see. Visitwww.ucas.com/students/applying/howtoapply/ personalstatement for more guidance.

    YOUR REFERENCE

Your reference is a vital part of your application. We cannot process your application

without full details of a referee and their reference. We will not accept references fromfamily members, friends, partners or ex-partners. Your reference must also be submittedin English, but can be a translation. Sometimes international students want to send moreinformation, perhaps a CV or additional references, in support of their application. If youwant to do this, send the information directly to your chosen universities or colleges, quoting your UCAS Personal ID. Please dont send anything extra to us.

Step1 - Choosing courses Your first step is to find out about the universities and colleges and the courses theyoffer. Try to use as many of the following sources of information as possible.

    COURSE FINDER

Course Finder is our new, intuitive search engine available atwww.ucas.com/ coursefinder . Developed based on actual user requirements, Course Finderenables you to search courses by a wide range of features including subject, qualificati on, region and campus. Theres also the ability to filter your searches byfees, professional bodies, entry year and whether single or combined subjects.

    CONNECT WITH UCAS

Visitwww.ucasconnect.com to watch useful UCAStv how-to video guides, suchas international students, choosing courses and attending events, get tips onapplying and read student blogs. From here you can also link to our Facebook,Twitter and YouTube pages.

You should also contact your local British Council office as we work closely withthem in providing up-to-date information to students. They may be able to help youin your search for a UK course.

Many students enquire about university league tables or rankings. These arecompiled by several organisations (often newspapers) that use different criteria towork out the rankings. These may not be the criteria you want to use. This is whereresearching your courses through UCAS can help you to find the one that is bestsuited to you.
