Could this be an elusive cougar? Maybe, maybe not. Thanks to Dean Love for sending us this interesting trail camera photo of a very ambiguous looking big cat. We certainly enjoy featuring the different wildlife locat-ed on St. Joseph Island and judging from the comments we get throughout our days most enjoy reading them. While we will point out the most likely identity of this cat is a bobcat, an animal many others have spotted on occasion, no one we showed the photo too was quick to identify it as one. Many even had to stare at the picture for a good while before declaring they had no idea which of the three big cats native to northern Ontario it actually
was. Before sending us the photo, Dean Love did send the photo to several experts and while most lean towards it being a bobcat he could not get a definite answer, with some suspecting it is indeed a cougar. After receiving the photo, we too sent it off to people who know better than us and even had some friends from down south weigh in on the discussion on Facebook.
The Ministry of Natural Resources did say it was likely a bobcat, but it is difficult to tell based on the photo. Several other non-experts have suggested it could be the mythical cougar - an animal that almost certainly in-

Busy Christmas Weekend
There might not be any snow on the ground, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t just barely over a month away from Christmas. This past weekend both the Hilton Beach Community Hall and Royal Canadian Legion in Richards landing hosted events catering to the Christ-mas shopper, or those just out and about for the day.
Saturday was the Holly Jolly Christmas craft show in Hilton Community Hall, with 2 floors of vendors all kinds of items were available to purchase from board games, to handmade wreathes, to snacks and other ed-itable goodies, and of course the traditional Christmas Crafts and decorations and much more. The wreathes created by Carolyn Henderson had an almost diorama feel, with local plant life used to create beautiful and natural looking displays. Some certainly had a Christ-mas feel to them, but others were something you’d dis-play year-round. While the upstairs of Hilton Commu-nity Hall was quite full downstairs there was even more including locally made birdhouses catering to our local bird species.
There is more than just Christmas decorations to choose from at the craft show and the bazaar, with plenty of other great items we have not even men-
habits northern Ontario but is rarely seen or officially reported. Last year in Thunder Bay, a dead cougar was found for the first time in Northern Ontario. We are not saying that a cougar sight-ing has been confirmed but this mys-terious photo has definitely stumped some seasoned hunters and islanders.
With hunting season winding down, perhaps you got some interesting trail cam photos. If you would like to share, feel free to send them to us.

tioned so keep it in mind for next year.
Events like this and the Christmas Tea and Bazaar the following day in Richards Landing really showcase the talents of local artisans and give you the opportunity to purchase many items not only local but unique items you simply can’t find at larger retail stores. While there was some overlap at the Legion there were plenty of unique vendors who did not make an appearance the day before at the Hilton Community Hall. Again there was much more than just Christmas related items and if you want-ed instant gratification you could start your day with the Cookie Walk.
Despite getting to the Cookie Walk on Sunday prior to lunchtime, many of the cookies had been picked through at the ever popular event, this is not to say we still didn’t get a great selection, but we were still unable to make it all the way across the table before our boxes were overflow-ing.
It may not seem like Christmas is just around the corner but by delivery day there will only be 34 days to the big day and there are still lots of opportunities to shop local.

Transportation Needs Survey The North Channel Poverty Network has identi-fied four key areas of concern for our area which encompasses Echo Bay through Iron Bridge including St. Joseph Island.
These four are: 1. Food Security, 2. Transportation, 3. Essential services, and 4. Housing security.
We recognize that lack of transportation is a bar-rier for many to access essential medical and non-medical services. We are assessing the need for public transport and what activities/locations people need this transport to access. It could be for any activity that would benefit your family such as grocery shopping, dentists, employmentcounseling, etc.
We invite any citizen of this area or someone who serves this area in any capacity to fill out the following survey to assess the need for public transport and what activities/locations people need transport to access. We also wel-come any concerned community member who feels they can contribute to this process to join the Poverty Network and we are looking for champions in each of our communities.
You can access the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GQ2G7GJ.
Please contact [email protected] or 705-542-4519 if you have any questions.
