j umping into the subject, I was surprised by the fascination

that it could bring. Although a bit daunting for the «unin-

formed» I am provoked not to boredom but rather a desire

to know the result, like in a good novel. I was also struck by

scientists’ need for images to make theories or discoveries iden-

tifiable and ac- cessible. We also spoke about “strange quark”,

“charmed quark”, and “beauty quark”, so called colourful constel-

lations and nebulae ... Names that make you want to know more ...

I was also very surprised at the number of poetic and philosophical

citations in popular scientific works, where Haw- king put forwards

the idea of time when talking about quantum physics, that he also

wants to explain the complexity in a children’s book, and that Luminet

also establish a strong link between poetry and astrophysics ...

Through all this, there is a real willingness by scientists to be

understood by as many people as possible, to not remain

locked in their in their cliques. Suddenly it seemed interesting

to me that as artists we do the opposite, that poetry leads us

to the rational: crossing paths, we say roughly, from the scien-

tific to the poetic for some, the poetic to the scientific for others.

Gaston Bachelard’s reflection confirms the common ground

between artists and scientists: the imagination. Although it

doesn’t have the same purpose for the two professions (one

distorts reality to create a poetic vision, the other dis- torts the

appearance that seems to be reality to discover a more “real”

or more “accurate” reality), one can imagine that these two

goals satisfy the same quest: to know and understand the world

THE MOTIVATIONS, INTERROGATIONSthat leads us to create

Big Bang

Who are we ?Where do

we come from ?Where are we going ?

The impossibility of being neutral, the necessity to engage :

Gigantomachie - 1983

The dilemma of cultural origins. Humanity :

Cette année-là... (le combat de Tancrède et Clorinde) - 1990

Environment and society of spectacle :

Ezili - 1995

Madness, eccentricity, the interest and the need of fools :

Don Quichotte - 1997

Democracy after the search of a king : Simurgh - 2002

The benefit of the journey rather than the goal to achieve :

La Huitième Merveille - 2004

The history of the universe tackles very abstract concepts,

and the shape, and graphic design of the characters will be less realistic ;

this also brings us to change our skills.

The soundtrack is written with the the idea to discuss the

continuity of the evolution of the universe, from an atmos-

phere to another without break, accompanying some moments of drama.

It is not about, of course, recreating the 14 billion years of

evolution in detail of current scientific knowledge, but only to discuss

this development in its poetic dimension, to show the beauty of this

voyage through time and space ; and partially open the door to the great

questions that this poses to all thought.

Is there a beginning ? If so ,what was there before the begining ? An end ? Perhaps, but then what ?To share these questions, we chose the Roland Lehoucq’s suggestion : reverse chronology :To start with the end : man ! / To end with the result : go back to the Big Bang by considering the beginning / And then, what’s else ?

Unidentified Flying Objects roam without rhyme or reason and then they

are going slowly in the center.

A human totem rises :at the top :a head :the Eye !

A clock starts up backwards.

A hemisphere inflates under the flying totem,

white and blue like the Earth.

There’s a shadow play inside it. The totem is breaking up...

Surrounded by lively little elements of the totem, two creatures appear

looking for devouring each other.

A big fish of the Abyss tries to swallow more and more.

In the same time we can see balloons inflating inside the Earth like cells

multiplying.

The fish bites the Earth that is changing to Sun.

Life ends, solar system puts in order little by little, life gives way to the

mineral things...

Perpetual movement without evolution. Fixed universe in a permanent

state.

A squadron of meteorites circulates all around the place before bombing

the planets.

The attack of meteorites concentrates on the Sun that is turning red :

Supernovae, it inflates while it rises up.

The sphere leaves the center of the place. The lower part of this sphere is

constituted by a network of muddled tubes. All the flying characters move

around the place.

From the infinitely great, we go to the infinitely small, symbolized by different

laboratory’s places in whom the audience may move.

Abundance, madness, disorder cause dizziness.

Twin inflating spirals appear by drilling the sky and reflecting in each other

like intricated quantum particles.

In the middle of the place a light that is more and more blinding spreads out.

The flying characters are attracted by it.

All of them disappear in the light. The light draws these glints onto itself.

Mirror diks rolling in the audience are approaching the light and they hide

it completely.

Then, there’s the ...Big Bang !

Still present, the eye closes up.

Only a sound interrogation persists.

And then what ?

Nothing...

nothing else except a history that bounces into the sparkle of eyes.

WE LIVE ONLY IN THE LOOK OF

THE OTHER Axel Kahn

Plasticiens Volants Street theatre Company

We dreamt of writing our stories in the most beautiful stage : the sky !

And since then the moon and the stars are part of our decor and our spectators got used to

raise their heads for seeing the adventures that we tell. For that, we had to invent extraordinary

actors, giant inflatable puppets that are floating in the air and plunging us into the fantasy world

of childhood. They are extensions of the actors / dancers who handle from and into the audience.

Our shows are always held in open space without barriers and without limit...

They consist mainly in large pictures that everyone can see at the same time and whose music

highlights the intentions. The magic has operated, our dreams have come true and since 35 years,

we travel through the heavens of the world. Wherever they are, spectators first discover with

curiosity and then with pleasure these celestial epics. As we said in one of our shows : « No one

should remain neutral ! ».The images that we implement trigger strong and also soft emotions,

and by this way children and adults find themselves and vibrate together. Then everyone starts

dreaming and escaping.

There are glances lit up with complice smiles and everlasting dream traces...
