Acts8:1-8(ESV)AndSaulapprovedofhisexecution.AndtherearoseonthatdayagreatpersecutionagainstthechurchinJerusalem,andtheywereallscatteredthroughouttheregionsofJudeaandSamaria,excepttheapostles.2DevoutmenburiedStephenandmadegreatlamentationoverhim.3ButSaulwasravagingthechurch,andenteringhouseafterhouse,hedraggedoffmenandwomenandcommittedthemtoprison.4Nowthosewhowerescatteredwentaboutpreachingtheword.5PhilipwentdowntothecityofSamariaandproclaimedtothemtheChrist.6AndthecrowdswithoneaccordpaidattentiontowhatwasbeingsaidbyPhilip,whentheyheardhimandsawthesignsthathedid.7Foruncleanspirits,cryingoutwithaloudvoice,cameoutofmanywhohadthem,andmanywhowereparalyzedorlamewerehealed.8Sotherewasmuchjoyinthatcity.John4:21-24(NIV)21“Woman,”Jesusreplied,“believeme,atimeiscomingwhenyouwillworshiptheFatherneitheronthismountainnorinJerusalem.23YetatimeiscomingandhasnowcomewhenthetrueworshiperswillworshiptheFatherintheSpiritandintruth,fortheyarethekindofworshiperstheFatherseeks.24Godisspirit,andhisworshipersmustworshipintheSpiritandintruth.”

Acts8:9-13(ESV)9ButtherewasamannamedSimon,whohadpreviouslypracticedmagicinthecityandamazedthepeopleofSamaria,sayingthathehimselfwassomebodygreat.10Theyallpaidattentiontohim,fromtheleasttothegreatest,saying,“ThismanisthepowerofGodthatiscalledGreat.”11Andtheypaidattentiontohimbecauseforalongtimehehadamazedthemwithhismagic.12ButwhentheybelievedPhilipashepreachedgoodnewsaboutthekingdomofGodandthenameofJesusChrist,theywerebaptized,bothmenandwomen.13EvenSimonhimselfbelieved,andafterbeingbaptizedhecontinuedwithPhilip.Andseeingsignsandgreatmiraclesperformed,hewasamazed.
THE CHURCH EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT TO PREACH

Acts8:14-17(ESV)14NowwhentheapostlesatJerusalemheardthatSamariahadreceivedthewordofGod,theysenttothemPeterandJohn,15whocamedownandprayedforthemthattheymightreceivetheHolySpirit,16forhehadnotyetfallenonanyofthem,buttheyhadonlybeenbaptizedinthenameoftheLordJesus.17ThentheylaidtheirhandsonthemandtheyreceivedtheHolySpirit.Ephesians1:13-14(NIV)13AndyoualsowereincludedinChristwhenyouheardthemessageoftruth,thegospelofyoursalvation.Whenyoubelieved,youweremarkedinhimwithaseal,thepromisedHolySpirit,14whoisadepositguaranteeingourinheritanceuntiltheredemptionofthosewhoareGod’spossession—tothepraiseofhisglory.Acts8:18-24(ESV)18NowwhenSimonsawthattheSpiritwasgiventhroughthelayingonoftheapostles’hands,heofferedthemmoney,19saying,“Givemethispoweralso,sothatanyoneonwhomIlaymyhandsmayreceivetheHolySpirit.”20ButPetersaidtohim,“Mayyoursilverperishwithyou,becauseyouthoughtyoucouldobtainthegiftofGodwithmoney!21Youhaveneitherpartnorlotinthismatter,foryourheartisnotrightbeforeGod.22Repent,therefore,ofthiswickednessofyours,andpraytotheLordthat,ifpossible,theintentofyourheartmaybeforgivenyou.23ForIseethatyouareinthegallofbitternessandinthebondofiniquity.”24AndSimonanswered,“PrayformetotheLord,thatnothingofwhatyouhavesaidmaycomeuponme.”
