As another calendar year draws quickly to a close and we are swept into the whirlwind of holiday festivities, we would like to celebrate the past few months here at BAPS. What shines through is the remarkable character of this community of learners. We would particularly like to acknowledge the incredible work of all of our BAPS staff. They are an amazing group of dedicated and caring professionals who give their best every day to ensure that our students have a plethora of opportunities to learn, grow and succeed both, in and outside of the classroom. As part of responsible BAPS citizenship, our Student Leadership Team has already been hard at work with many initiatives. We are so proud of our young leaders who truly act with hand, head and heart inspiring so many important endeavours. At our annual Remembrance Day Assembly, we were treated to moving performances of our talented students. Beautiful music and thoughtful readings helped us remember and appreciate those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that our country remains free and democratic. We greatly appreciate the creativity and efforts of our students under the direction of Mme Eberlin and her team of teachers. Coached by Mme Harper and Mr. Fishman, our Boys and Girls Volleyball teams had plenty of opportunities to practice their skills during a number of Area and Regional events. We are so proud of our athletes! During the annual Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, November 18, BAPS Marching Band once again wowed the spectators and judges alike, earning BAPS the Top Band award! Many thanks to Mme Eberlin, Mme Doucas, Mme Chamberland, Mme Harper, Mme Tanna, Mme Haji Zadeh and all the parents who came out in support of our young musicians, despite the pouring rain! During Bullying Awareness Week in November, we focused lessons, conversations, and community circle discussions on inclusion and respect, encouraging empathy and celebrating our differences. We focused on building positive friendship and developing strategies to get help and reduce the power of bullying in our lives. As a staff, we continue to reinforce a positive and respectful community culture, and look for teaching points not just during that week, but continuously throughout the year across all subject areas. One of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school each and every day. To that end, once again, we would like to bring to your attention that we continue to notice unsafe driving practices on the street in front of the school and in the school parking lot (e.g. cars doing U-turns, parking on both sides of the street restricting traffic, blocking busses, etc.). If you drive your child to school, we MUST ENLIST YOUR COOPERATION. Parking on side streets, especially McConvey because it connects to the pathway to the back of the school, is highly recommended. The walkway to the back of the school on Lynett Crescent is a shortcut that leads straight to the school’s backyard. This will alleviate the congestion at the front of the school and make the drop-off and pick-up safer for all. Thank you, as always, for your understanding and cooperation in this most serious matter. We always welcome community volunteers to support our safe arrival entry procedures. Once again, our November Student-Led Conferences were a hub of excitement with a real community feel! We thank all our families who attended the conferences and had important conversations with their children and their teachers. Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we make a difference in the social, emotional and academic lives of our students your children. We would like to invite you to join us on Thursday, December 14 for our annual Holiday Concert at 6:00 p.m. Please check this newsletter for the participating groups. As we move to the final weeks before the holidays and you look forward to whatever form your celebrations take, may peace, love and joy fill your hearts and your homes. To all our families celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and Lunar New Year in the next couple of months we wish you the very best of the season’s festivities – Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Habari Gani and Gong Hey Fat Choy! We look forward to the new year as we continue our partnership in support of student learning and well-being. Happy 2018 everyone! Congratulations to our intermediate Volleyball teams. They worked hard at practices, exhibition games and warm-up tournaments. Improving in skill and communication after every game. Both teams saved the best for the area tournament, playing some of the best volleyball of their seasons. The girls team finished in 4th place after a hard fought game against the eventual champions. The boys team saved their best play for an intense 3 set semi-final, winning after a 9 point comeback. With momentum on their side, the boys won their final game and represented BAPS at the regional competition on November 28th. Congratulations and thanks to all our volleyball players for their participation and for representing BAPS well on and off the court. Thank you to all the players, their families and Mme Harper and Mr. Fish for their time and commitment.

On Tuesday November 7th, the grade 5s took a trip to visit Vaughan City Hall to learn about municipal government. The students learned about the services offered by the city, including fire safety, the archives, and social programs. The students also got to meet the Mayor of Vaughan, the Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua and ask him questions about the responsibilities of a mayor. To conclude our day, the students took a tour of the sustainably built City Hall building and participated in a Canada 150 activity creating dream catchers that will be part of an art installment at one of the Vaughan Community Centres later in the year. It was a great day!

On November 9th, BAPS students remembered those who fought for our freedom at a Remembrance Day Assembly. Students were fortunate to hear from a real soldier, Chief Warrant Officer Persaud, and perform songs to honor the fallen.

Remembrance Day

The University of Waterloo Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing administers many internationally recognized contests to help to inspire the next generation of students to develop an interest in and love for mathematics and computer science. The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) introduces computer science to students. It is designed to get students with little or no previous experience excited about computing. On November 17th, 20 of our grade 8 students participated in the Beaver Computing Challenge, solving mathematical and logical problems connected to computer science. Thank you to our School Council for supporting our students in this educational endeavour.

Intermediate students enjoyed a presentation by Mike Ford. Mr. Ford took students on a break-neck tour of Canadian history through explorers’ tales, First Nations lore, the War of 1812, rebellions, early English-French relations, Confederation and a decade-by-decade examination of the country’s explosive 20th century. Journey into the nation’s past, as grade-level curriculum was brought to life across multiple viewpoints in story and song! We thank our School Council for their support of the Art Series.

Art Series: Mike Ford

Art Series: Sultans of String

Led by violinist Chris McKhool, the Sultans of String thrilling performance presented a sonic tapestry of world music that explored styles, harmonies and melodies from around the globe. Together with students, the group combined Spanish flamenco, Arabic folk, East Coast fiddling, Cuban rhythms and Gypsy-jazz, in a collaboration that broke down the barriers that divide us and provided a model for peace. We thank our School Council for their support of the Art Series.

Congratulations to our BAPS Marching Band for their outstanding performance in the Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade! 105 students braved the wet weather and marched the 2 km route under the bright Holiday lights while entertaining the large crowds to the tune of Jingle Bells. The BAPS Marching Band won the Best School Band Award. Thank you to Mme Eberlin, Mme Doucas, Mme Chamberland, Mme Harper, Mme Tanna and Mme Haji Zadeh for marching with the band.

BAPS HOLIDAY CONCERT!

Thursday, Dec. 14th - 6:30 p.m. You are cordially invited to an evening of entertainment at our annual

BAPS Holiday Concert

Featuring:

The Junior Choir

The Glee Club

The Grade 7 Band

The Grade 8 Band

The Ukulele Club

The Holiday Dance Club

Thank you for your support ! We look forward to entertaining you with a variety of Holiday Music!

In November, about 1,000 students, staff members and community partners came together from across the Board to form a Ring of Peace and stand together against hate, discrimination and intolerance. The student speakers at the event shared meaningful messages about the importance of feeling welcome, valued and respected. At York Region District School Board, we are committed to listening to the voices of our students and communities. We will continue working with our school communities to ensure our schools provide safe, welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone. Last month, our annual Quest conference brought together educators from across Ontario, Canada and around the world to share, learn and discuss how to foster well-being in schools. Some of the themes covered included equity and inclusivity, and safe and caring environments. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about some of the positive things happening in our own schools and other districts. In recent months, we have had several international visitors come to our system and schools to learn more about the work in our system to support student achievement and well-being, including Qatar, the Netherlands, Texas and the United Kingdom. We are pleased to have these opportunities to continue highlighting and sharing the great things happening in our schools thanks to our outstanding students, staff members, families and community partners. Your engagement makes a difference in our schools and I encourage you to continue getting involved in the life of your child’s school. As we enter the holiday season, I am once again impressed by the generosity of our school communities and our students’ commitment to helping others. Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful start to 2018.

The Student Leadership Committees at BAPS have been busy busy busy! The Grade 6-8 students wanting to make a difference in the school community have come together into 5 committees: Community Spirit, ME to WE, Eco, Graduation, and Yearbook. Community Spirit: With spooky movie trivia, healthy snacks, and costume and dance prizes - the Intermediate Halloween Dance was a great success! ME to WE: In response to some of the natural disasters that have affected communities in the world, the ME to WE committee has chosen Water as our school’s pillar for this year. We have decided to help ME to WE global issues by raising awareness and fundraising to help those in communities around the world where there is limited access to clean drinking water. As a local action, our annual “We Scare Hunger” campaign was also very successful, with over 1000 non-perishable items collected for the Richmond Hill Food Bank. Thank you for helping us make a difference in our local community. Eco: The committee will be conducting a pre-campaign audit for energy use and waste produced at school in the weeks leading up to the Winter Break. The results of the audits will be shared with students and school staff so we know how we are doing so far, and how we can improve! The Eco Committee would like to remind the school community that using reusable containers for lunch and snack items helps reduce our school waste. Grad Committee: Popcorn and cookies are sold every Wednesday to raise funds for the Grade 8 Graduation. Up Next ME to WE is once again running a We are Rafikis campaign. From December 4th to 11th, rafiki bracelets will be sold as a fundraiser. "Rafiki" is Swahili word for friend. By selling Rafiki chains, we can help women in Kenya to earn a living and to send their children to school. Grade 4 to 6 Class Representatives will be presenting the Rafiki choices to their classmates. Orders placed will arrive by the last day of school before break.

An inclement weather day is a day where road or weather conditions make it impossible to operate a school bus safely. On days that extreme weather warrants the cancellation of school transportation, schools will remain open unless also deemed an emergency because of a breakdown of essential services. The decision to cancel transportation is made by 6:30 a.m. A bus cancellation message will also be available at www.schoolbuscity.com and by calling 1-877-330-3001, or by following the YRDSB and YCDSB on twitter.

With the approach of the cooler weather, we would like to remind you that

students spend time outdoors at least twice daily for recess and they should

arrive at school with appropriate outdoor clothing, including a change of

footwear and socks.

Please make sure your child has a pair of indoor shoes for school. Outdoor shoes

track in mud and dirt and it can be very uncomfortable for the children to wear

wet shoes and socks all day.

Every student must have a clean pair of sneakers for their physical education

classes, which they can also wear as indoor shoes. Please help your child achieve

success in physical education and help us keep the school clean. Please also

send in a change of clothing for your child, since our students often need to

change into clean/dry clothes during the day.

Cold Weather Approaching

As the holiday break quickly approaches many of you have probably forgotten to order your child’s school portraits. Some of you may have misplaced your proof sheet or just thought that maybe it is not too late to order. It is NOT too late and you do not need your proof sheet. Please call 1-800-473-5090 and one of our professional sales team members will help you with the ordering process. All orders received by December 7th will be delivered in time for Christmas. Or pay an additional $3.99 for easy ship to home. If you have your proof sheets just go to MYLIFETOUCH.CA to order your portraits and take advantage of our wide variety of background selections.

Thank you and Happy Holidays from Lifetouch!

Please pass on this information to anyone interest in registering their child for Kindergarten

Kindergarten registration will commence on January 19, 2018 for the 2018-19 school

year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Children

who turn four or five years old during 2018, live within the school boundary and

whose parents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for

kindergarten. A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this

spring. For more information please visit the YRDSB website or contact your local

school.

Kindergarten Registration

Page 9 Issue 4

Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at French Immersion schools on January 18, 2018 at 7 p.m. Please visit YRDSB’s website in January 2018 (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Program-Locations.aspx) to find the FI program location for your elementary school location. FI registration will begin January 19, 2018. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2018, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call the school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to the designated FI program location to register between January 19 and February 9, 2018. This eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrollment information or to pre-register. YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. Space requirements at some schools may mean that siblings are in different schools for primary dual track French Immersion programs due to differing grade structures. Like any of our schools across the Board, changes to school boundaries, and/or the accommodation model for the French Immersion program may need to be considered when new schools open, a school experiences enrolment growth, and program changes occur. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

Instructional Time Begins at 8:00 a.m.!

Our entry bell is at 7:58. When students arrive late for school, not only have they missed part of their program, but their arrival is disruptive to the other students in their class. Students are expected to attend school on a regular basis and arrive on time. It is essential that students learn the importance of being punctual as it is a life skill everyone needs to develop. We understand that sometimes late arrivals are unavoidable due to emergencies and special appointments, but the majority of late days can be prevented with some careful planning by each family. We know traffic can be a challenge, however, if your child is eligible for bussing, and there is a reason why your child does not take the bus transportation provided and you must drive him or her to school, please arrive by 7:45, before the buses. Supervision begins outside at that time, so your child can wait for the bell with their friends in safety behind the school. Thank you for your cooperation with this extremely important issue.

School Visitors

Page 11 Beverley Acres Banner

All parents and visitors are required to sign in at the office and wear a visitor’s pass. Parents may not go through the hallways or out onto the school yard. We ask that all families wait for their children outside the exit door. Parents, if you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please send a note or call the office to request an appointment. Following these procedures fosters independence in our students and ensures a greater degree of safety for all. We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe!

Please remember that at BAPS, over 98% of our students take a bus to and from school. For this reason, writing notes to change buses is NOT permitted. This is to ensure the safety of your children. Thank you for your cooperation!

No Bus Passes

If you pick up your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you arrive by 2:20 pm. If you know that you will not be on time, your child will be supervised by our staff at the back of the school and not be left to wait unsupervised at the front of the school.

Your child will proceed to the front of the school at 2:35 along with our bus students. Students will not be left waiting for parents outside alone at the end of the day.

Please ensure that arrangements are made to pick up your child by 2:20 or 2:35, at the latest.

If you plan to pick up your child up early from school you must call and arrive at the school before 2:00 p.m. Requests after this time will not be honoured as they disrupt our dismissal procedure. Thank you for your assistance.

Student Afterschool Pick up

Please be reminded that traffic congestion in a school zone is not only an

annoyance, it is a threat to student safety as well as a violation of the

by-laws of the Town of Richmond Hill. Neal Drive is a no-parking,

no-stopping zone which is monitored by the illegally may face stiff fines.

At BAPS over 98% of our students ride school buses, as such there is no

accommodation for parent traffic on the school grounds during morning

arrival and at dismissal. Please do not try to enter the parking lot at these

times.

This is a reminder to all parents/guardians/students that Beverley Acres

Public School is a nut-free zone.

Please, for the well-being of your child’s friends and teachers, make sure to

read all food labels THOROUGHLY before sending food to school with your

child. If you use alternatives to peanut butter, such as sunflower seed or

soy butter, please make sure to indicate that by placing a note with your

child’s lunch.

Reminder: Nut Free Snacks

Medication

Children who need to take medication at school require a Request for Administration of Oral Medication Form signed by the parent before the medication can be given. If your child requires medication during the school day please see the Secretary in the office. Also, we ask that parents keep the school informed of any medical concerns they may have regarding their child. It is important that we work together to ensure the safety of all our students.

Too Sick to Go Out for Recess?

Then you are too sick to attend school. It is an expectation at Beverley Acres that if your child attends school then they must go outside at the recess breaks. Supervision is not available in classrooms or the office during these times of day. If a student is well enough to attend school, then he/she will be expected to go outside for recess.

Parents, please remember to pack a spoon and/or fork in your child’s lunch as we do not provide cutlery.

Spoons & Forks

When visiting the school PLEASE check the Lost and Found for any missing articles (clothing, water bottles, shoes, books, etc.). Any unclaimed items will be donated to charities as of December 23, 2016. Your lost items will be on display during our annual Holiday Concert. In the meantime, we have quite a collection of smaller items in the office (a number of pairs of glasses from last year and this, USBs, watches, jewellery, etc.). Should your child be missing any small items please check with the office.

Beverley Acres School Council is made up of many dedicated parents, whom work hard to coordinate and execute many different events throughout our school calendar year. Each and every parent volunteer dedicates their time by attending meetings approximately 6 times in the school year. With their support, we have managed to establish an effective and solid foundation between the school and home life for our children. Below are some of the positions on School Council:

draising Committee Working Group

If you are interested in getting involved or would like to know what we do, please join us at the council meetings. All parents/caregivers are welcome to attend. Don’t miss an opportunity to be on a winning team this year. If you are interested,
