TUNGE’S TAKE As I’m typing this, it’s raining! I guess my wish from April about showers and flowers has come true! Main Street is looking fabulous thanks to the City and Gaylen Sailer and his crew at High Plains Concepts. The baskets that have gone up look great. City clean-up night was a success. The rain held off until we were about done grilling. Thank you to the Chamber members, Beulah Lions, Beulah Public Schools, Boy Scouts and the City for a great work night. There was a lot of trash collected and delivered to the transfer station. Also a huge thank you to Heather Ferebee for getting the food lined out and Bill Suter for being the Chamber’s resident grill master! The office has been abuzz working on Dakota Walleye Classic! Denise has been calling people and collecting donations like crazy. If you are a local business expect some calls next week! We’d like to have all our spon-sorships collected next week or at least a commitment so we can begin working on sponsor banners for the tournament. So far it’s looking like the teams are going to be thrilled with what we’ve collected. Everything from fishing nets to lifejackets to boat batteries! It’s so wonderful to see the support the community and surrounding area gives to this tournament. Without you we couldn’t host the quality event we do. On June 1st the Chamber will be serving lunch at the Senior Center. I never turn down help so if you’re looking for something fun to do from 11a-2p on Wednesday June 1st please join us! We’ll be serving ham and scalloped potatoes with sides and a selection of yummy pies. The board of directors met last week and voted to put together a building committee. This committee is looking at not only our existing space and what we can do to improve the services we provide customers, but also several other locations. We are in the exploratory stage and no commitments have been made. This is the logical next step in the ongoing discussion over how to improve and provide better services to members and customers. More to come as we move through this process. The photo project is coming along. We’ve had some old photos from the Mercer County Museum digitized and will be having some printed on canvas to match the new photos we recently put up. If you haven’t been in to the office in a while, stop down and check it out! There are some neat photographs of our city! We are still looking for memberships! If you have an invoice lying around, please send it in! The outreach, newsletter and community events are largely supported by membership funds. If you have questions on your membership information don’t hesitate to call the office. Terry has been working hard on updating the membership database. The summer is going to fly by and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at the great summer events we’ll be hosting!! Cheers, Sarah

There has been so much activity in town in the last several months! It’s an exciting time in Beulah. There have been several new businesses who’ve opened their doors and the Chamber would like to take the opportunity to welcome them to the business community!

Don Pierce has recently taken over the American Family Insurance office. The Greeter Committee made a stop there to wish Don the best of luck and welcome him to the community.

Then and Now Candy Store opened in Mid-April in the Greystone building. This new shop offers up all types of candy and treats including some Pride of Dakota products. Hours are Mon-Tue 11a-5p, Wed 11a-6p, Thurs-Fri 11a-5p, Sat 10a-4p.

Rolling Hills Feed and Seed has moved into the old VFW building. They are a full service feed and seed operation. Please call 870-4011 to visit with them on your feed and seed needs.

Starboard Clothing store has also opened a shop in Beulah. They are located at 109 Central Ave N, across from City Hall. The store is filled with great name brand clothing and accessories. Stop in to see them Mon-Fri 10a-8p and Sat 10a-6p.

Things have been busy this spring but we’re working with all these great new businesses to set up a time for a welcome and photo op with the Greeter Committee! It’s so refreshing to have entrepre-neurs and new businesses joining the community! Best wishes to you all and please stop in to visit us any time!

Build Your Brand You know you should be developing a brand. But you don’t know what steps to take. Here is one place for some ideas such as: get a logo; make it visible on everything (give things away); and use it on social media. http://searchenginewatch.com/sew/how-to/2388727/5-ways-smallbusinesses-can-build-their-brands-in-2015

Logo vs Brand Confused about the differences. Seth God-win’s short blog may help to clear up the confusion. A quick, easy to understand com-parison. http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2015/01/logovs-brand.html

Small-business Savvy: Start Your Business on the Side

By Glenn Muske, Rural and Agribusiness Enterprise Development Specialist NDSU Extension Service Admit it. You want to own your own business. Saying this is OK. Many people feel the same as you do. Owning a business is a goal many of us have, just like we want to own our own house. Yet turning that wish into reality is the hurdle where many people stop. It’s scary. Besides knowing exactly what type of business they should start, the idea of giving up that sure thing, their paycheck and associated benefits, stops them from reaching for the dream. Some families make the leap by having one of the partners keep his or her job. Yet even that is not always possible be-cause we tend to have set our spending at a level where we need two incomes. So we stall out. This hurdle, though, need not stop us. Many business startup guides encourage people to start the business on the side. Starting a side business is a win-win tactic. You get to keep your day job and the security of the paycheck and benefits package while you explore your business idea. And keeping that paycheck will help limit the amount of outside funding you might need. You can put more of your own resources into starting the business and need little or no funding just to pay for daily living expenses. So how does one do it? It starts with hustle or, what some might say, burning the candle at both ends. It means perhaps having to let go of some favorite recreational pastime, as least in the short term. And it also may mean less family time and/or sleep. Just these changes alone mean you need to have a good talk with yourself; now might be a time to bring in a mentor. You also need to have a conversation with your spouse or partner, along with any children or parents who you might be assist-ing. You may well want to reach out to other business owners and find out who else started this way. Ask them how for tips on how they did it. A second issue is what business model to use. You’ve proba-bly heard that you can’t open a storefront if you aren’t there. That’s true but only if you are thinking of a typical storefront. What about a pop-up business, a short-term, perhaps seasonal

effort? This may take your vacation time. But isn’t the end goal worth it? Or maybe you can run the business on nights and weekends only. You can start many businesses at this level just to ex-plore the market. You also can talk with your current employer. Maybe you can work out a modified work schedule or take some time off without pay. Starting a business is a dream of many. Beginning your busi-ness on the side might be the way to make it happen. More information is available at your local Extension office, as well as at http://powerofbusiness.net and www.eXtension.org/entrepreneurship. The Small Business Administration and its related organiza-tions, such as the Small Business Development Centers and Service Corps of Retired Executives, along with many other state agencies, also can be valuable resources.
