Shahriar, what brought you to Dubai? I’ve been living in the city for about 14 years. My family moved here from Australia about a year before that when my father decided to set-up our business (Al Aqili Furnishings). I actually came over to Dubai to visit my mum, who I missed, and my father then tricked me into buying a car and then staying on and running the business!
What made you decide to buy a property in JBR? I was always interested in lofts as I really like that ‘loft living’ style; being in a spacious, open environment. So, when I heard about the lofts here I was very keen to have one of my own. Because of
our interior furnishings business it also really gave me the chance to do whatever I wanted using my own resources. I also loved JBR as an area; it gives you a different feel to the rest of Dubai as it makes you feel like you’re living in Spain or the South of France. For that reason, I chose a property with a Marina-facing view, which means I get to soak up some of the city’s lights from my window, too.
Do you see it as a good investment, despite the fall in prices? I bought this loft two or three years ago and although I probably paid around double the price, I do still see it as a good investment. The area overall here is a popular one, with great amenities so,
despite prices being lower than what they were, in the long run it’s an asset. Right now I’m not 100% whether to rent it out or sell it because it was designed as a bachelor pad and now I’m engaged I’m not sure it’s the right style for married life!
How do you find the facilities at JBR?They’re great; everything you need is here. The variety of shops and restaurants along The Walk is also amazing – you can just step outside, and stroll along it, next to the beach, and find exactly what you’re after, and have a nice meal as well. We often head to Scoozi on ground level and, every now and then when I feel like being unhealthy I’ll get a donar kebab from the Fish and Chips shop on the corner!

What are the local residents like here? I think there’s a real mix of demographics living in JBR. We have fantastic neighbours – those opposite are Indian and Dutch, while on the other side the couple are from Finland and have just had a baby. There’s definitely a mix of couples, individuals and families living here, too – professionals and parents – it’s a good mix.
Do you feel that there’s anything lacking at JBR? The only area it falls short in is the building maintenance; I think that needs to improve. There are communal areas which aren’t in the best shape and when you have a premium apartment you don’t want to see cracks in the walls, and such like. The elevators could improve aesthetically too and it would be great to have windows that actually open in the apartment. But, other than that I can’t complain; it’s really nice.
Talk us through the apartment, how did you take it from an empty shell to what we see today? When I first got it, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. The idea came at
an interior awards dinner. I was sat with an interior designer called Chris Barnes from Broadway Interiors and I said to him, ‘I’ll give you my loft as an empty canvas so you can come and do your work of art’. My only stipulations were that it had to be styled for an executive bachelor, and reflect my lifestyle. Plus, when people walk in I wanted them to say ‘wow’. From there, Chris did the work and all of the interiors you see are from my own company, from furniture to lighting and fabrics. We did bring in other partners for certain elements, though, as we don’t handle features like kitchens. For that we brought in names like Porsche Design by Poggenpohl, Subzero for the fridge and Platinum Vision for the home automation.
Did you make any structural changes to the loft? Yes; it came with one floor, for the bedroom and the master bathroom but I wanted a gym and a study area too. Although it’s big for a one bedroom loft, we didn’t have enough space so we applied for permission to put in a second floor, on the opposite side and added another 200 square feet. Normally a fit out
like this would only take two to three months maximum, but awaiting approvals and bringing designs in from overseas – the Porsche Kitchen, for example, came in from Germany and was the first to be installed outside of the US and Europe – meant that it all took around nine months to complete.
Now that you and Nastaran have moved in, where is your favourite place to spend time? If I throw a party or have people round we all tend to gather in the kitchen, around the bar, and have drinks and snacks there. But, when I come home after work the majority of my time is spent in the bedroom! Everything in the apartment is controlled by an iPod, so I can head up there and watch movies or TV or relax on the chaise longue, which moves up and down. What I love most, though, is the way the bed is positioned, diagonal to two windows. When you press the ‘up’ button and the blinds pull back, the sun comes in from the Marina and it’s just amazing. The views make it the best place I’ve ever woken up in – I think it’s the best place to wake up in the world.

If you dream of life by the beach, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from it in one of Jumeirah Beach Residence’s 40 buildings, which tower over The Walk, Dubai’s famous outdoor hub of shops, hotels and restaurants. Murjan’s plaza gives way to a Caribou Coffee branch, an independent coffee shop; Tiffany Royal Café and Flavours (04 448 6454), which offers a quick home delivery service. For shopping, men can head to Savile Row (www.savilerow.ae) for tailor-made suits, while women can bag designer bargains galore at Style Outlet. Stroll to neighbouring Sadaf and you’ll find a Costa Coffee by the newly opened Dungeon Billiards (04 447 3856) – where you can have a game of pool or surf the net over drinks. Alternatively, grab an epic burger at Fudruckers (04 437 0203). A fabulous shop is nestled here for little ones and party-planners too; Tickles & Giggles (www.ticklesandgiggles.com). Next along is Bahar, followed closely by Rimal. The former is home to a large Starbucks and a fab French-style café that’s perfect for breakfast; Le Pain
Quotidien (www.lepainquotidien.com). At Rimal you’ll find a Virgin Megastore and can also pop to mum’s favourite Mothercare. If you’re hungry, tuck in at Pizza Express in Amwaj, or discover what Shams, the final towers, have to offer.
Leisure time The swimming pools and beach create an outdoor lifestyle on your doorstep. The Walk is also home to a number of world-class hotels including Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach (www.sofitel.com), the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort (www1.hilton.com), the Movenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach (www.moevenpick-hotels.com) and Amwaj Rotana (www.rotana.com). Each one opens its doors to a plethora of restaurants, bars and spas. If you’re feeling active, sign up to the Red Dragon Gym (04 439 0327) or the new fitness centre Studio Fitness (04 439 0403) at Murjan. For pampering, women can head to Hair Works in Rimal for your hair and beauty needs or N-bar (04 437 0277) in Shams for manicures and pedicures. Men, meanwhile, can try specialist barbers, like Man Age Spa (04 435 5780) in Bahar.
Schooling
Marina Village Nursery (www.jebelalinursery.com) in Bahar, is Jebel Ali Nursery’s largest branch and comes with a shaded outdoor area. A new addition to Sadaf, meanwhile, is Fun and Play Nursery (www.funandplay.ae), which cares for newborns through to six-year-olds using a UK childcare system. Elder kids can try Emirates International School Meadows (www.eischools.ae/meadows) a private school for infant and primary students in the Meadows. Or, try GEMS Wellington International School (www.wellingtoninternationalschool.com), off Sheikh Zayed Road, for primary, secondary and sixth form education.

The bedroomRestful thinking The bedroom is a place for rest; it should be a space of ‘yin’ as opposed to ‘yang’ – a space that is both peaceful and restful. This will ensure calm and induce sleep. To achieve it, avoid televisions, mirrors and exercise machines, as well as a work desk: all of these are too ‘yang’ and represent activity rather than rest. Health matters Never position a bed against a bathroom wall that contains water pipes as these can unknowingly cause sickness and Feng Shui is all about achieving and maintaining optimum health and well-being. Round and round Avoid circular shapes in the bedroom. Roundness represents the element of metal and is considered too yang – the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.
Sleep away Try not to sleep underneath a window, as when air comes through it can cause disturbance to you. The cure is to move your bed but, if this really isn’t possible, be sure to hang some thick curtains to resist incoming airwaves.
The living roomForward-facing Avoid sitting with your back to the door and instead sit with your back against a solid wall, facing the door. This is called the ‘Honoured Guest position’ and it allows you to see a person enter the room. With your back against it, you will be subconsciously aware that anyone can enter the room without being seen which can cause unrest. Less is more It’s of key importance to make way for a smooth path for the ‘qi’ (energy) to flow freely around the living room. With this in mind, avoid having
too much furniture.Open house Keep windows and doors clear and unobstructed to allow the qi to flow in to the house. Desk job If you have a desk of any kind in your living room, be sure to position the chair against the wall so that you can look into the room as you work and are not facing the wall.
The kiTchenThe right elements When designing a kitchen try not to position the stove opposite the sink. The two elements of ‘fire’ and ‘water’ do not mix well together. If this has already been done, simply add a green mat between them, which will act as a ‘bridge’ of the element of wood.In your sights When you are cooking it is best to have the door in view. The baThroom Prime position If you’re having a home designed from scratch, ask a practitioner to use a method known as ‘Flying Stars’ where they will assess where the ‘qi’ is not good – and position your bathroom there
to enhance a positive flow. Closet case When designing the layout of a house, the guest washroom should not be facing the front door. Doing so will cause a drain of energy. If your home is already laid out in this way, close the bathroom door to stop this occurring. Washed out If you have any leaking taps don’t ignore them, fix them right away. Practically speaking it’s a waste of water and from a Feng Shui perspective it’s sending money down the drain.Put a lid on it The question of whether to have the lavatory lid up or down usually has a simple answer but if your ‘wealth area’ (where the energy flows at its best) is found in the bathroom, always flush the toilet with the lid down. When the bathroom is not in use, leave the door ajar so that the qi can flow through the house.

Feng Shui: In Brief Feng Shui is an anicent Chinese art and science that’s existed for over 4,000 years and is used to analyse the energy structure belonging to every building.
Its name derives from the art’s study of two elements – wind (‘Feng’) and water (‘Shui’).
Complex formulas are used to balance the energy (‘qi’) of a building (for example, through the positioning of furniture) so that the qi can flow freely and bring health, harmony and wealth to its occupants.
The purpose of Feng Shui is to trap and pool beneficial qi and deflect any negative qi from a site, whether it’s applied to the planning of an entire city or a studio apartment.
In traditional Feng Shui, the forms surrounding a building are analysed to assess the impact they will have on each structure. Water near a home, for example, can activate qi in a beneficial way – great if your Dubai home is by the sea. This method uses yin and yang, the five elements, dates of birth of occupants, its internal and external environment, the age when the property was constructed and its compass bearing at the front to build a Flying Star chart which then analyses the health and wealth of the people living there.

Under cover Spruce up an armchair or the cushions of your dining room chairs by having them reupholstered in a standout print, like decadent damask, or a block colour. Interior designers and upholsterers can do the job for you. Try Arredo Casa Mia (04 347 7475).
Fine Finishes Tired of those old-fashioned wooden drawers or chest? Paint it with distressed or ‘antique’ finish paint; a fabulous way to bring it back on trend. Stick to off-white or cream for an ultra-chic look or inject charm with a spring hue, like duck-egg blue.

How do I…revamp my old furniture?
Step 1: Unscrew the seat cushion from the chair frame.
Step 2: Take out any staples or tacks in the fabric using a pair of pliers.
Step 3: Remove the fabric and (if it’s worn-out) remove the old foam or ‘batting’ too.
Step 4: Most dining room chair cushions are based on a single piece of wood. Take this piece and lay it on top of your new fabric. Next, cut around the wood using scissors and leave a
few inches of extra fabric on each side.
Step 5: Replace the stuffing with new foam. Lay the seat board on top of the foam and pull the sides tightly over what will be the bottom of the seat. Staple it down with a staple gun and trim any excess pieces.
Step 6: Lay the piece of wood, foam-side down, over your fabric. Pull the sides of the fabric and stretch it over what will be the bottom of the seat. Staple the fabric down on all four sides, being careful to keep the edges neat.

Tuna, Dijon musTarD anD sofT herb CarpaCCio With cucumber and radish salad
• 150gm fresh tuna, cut in to one-inch square slabs
• Fresh parsley, dill and mint, chopped
• 1tbsp Dijon mustard
• 1 cucumber
• 4 radishes
• Salt to taste
• Olive oil and lemon juice
1 Sear the tuna for 10 seconds on either
side and then set it aside to cool. 2 Spread the Dijon mustard on to each side of the seared tuna.3 Coat the tuna with the three freshly chopped herbs.4 Peel the cucumber, then cut it into long strips using a potato peeler. 5 Slice the radishes and make a salad using these alongwith the cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice and sprinkling of sea salt. 6 Cut the tuna into 5mm thick slices and arrange them around a plate, with the salad in the centre. 7 Sprinkle with fresh herbs and enjoy!

The fish cake
• 100gm skinless salmon fillet
• 50gm skinless cream dory fillet
• 60gm mash potato
• Small bunch of dill and pea shoots
• One lemon’s zest
• 1tbsp capers
• 50gm breadcrumbs
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1 bay leaf
• 250ml milk
• Flour for dusting
• Salt, vegetable oil
The sauce
• 1 shallot
• 50gm skinless cream dory fillet
• 1 garlic clove
• 50gm frozen green peas
• 100ml cooking cream
• 25gm butter
• Lemon zest
• Salt to flavour
1 To make the sauce, peel and slice the shallot and then place it into a heated saucepan with the butter and fry until golden in colour. 2 Add the cooking cream, bring to the boil and then add the green peas, bringing it to the boil once again. 3 Using a stick blender, immediately mix the sauce until it’s smooth in texture and season with salt and lemon zest to taste. 4 Make the fish cakes by placing the salmon, cream dory, milk, dill stalks and bay leaf into the sauce pan and bringing it to the boil. Finally, press a generous amount of breadcrumbs all over. the cakes. 8 Heat some oil in a frying pan and then fry each of the fish cakes for about five-minutes, until they are golden in colour on either side. 9 Place the fish cake in the middle of a plate and pour the warm pea sauce around it. 10 Sprinkle the chopped dill on top and serve with a juicy lemon wedge.
Crab, avoCaDo, TomaTo anD roCkeT salaDWith red pepper and lemon dressing
• 100gm white crab meat
• 1 large plum tomato
• 1 ripe avocado
• 1 large red pepper
• Bunch of fresh rocket
• Lemon juice
• 50ml olive oil
• Salt to season
1 Roast the red pepper and place it into a bowl, then cover it with cling film. Leave for 20minutes and then peel the skin from each pepper and remove its seeds. 2 Place the peeled pepper and olive oil in a food processor and blend it until it reaches a smooth consistency. 3 Season with salt and lemon juice to suit your taste. 4 Cut the avocado and tomato in to similar shapes (try cubes), mix it with the crab meat and rocket, then dress the salad with the red pepper dressing.
ChiCk pea panCake anD seareD sea bream filleT With fennel and parsley salad
• 130gm chick pea flour
• 280ml water
• ¾ spoon of sea salt
• ½ ground cumin
• 2tbsp spoons olive oil
• 1 fillet of sea bream
• 1 bulb of fennel
• 4 sprigs of parsley (leaves only)
• 100ml lemon juice
• 50ml olive oil and vegetable oil
• Salt to season
1 Preheat your oven to a temperature of 240 degrees Celcius. 2 For the pancake, mix all of the ingredients together into a thick, pancake-like consistency and set it aside to rest for one hour. 3 Meanwhile, slice the fennel to paper thin proportions and dip it into the lemon juice and olive oil. Leave for 10 minutes. 4 After it’s rested, make your pancakes. 5 Heat a frying pan and pour in the vegetable oil. 6 Pour enough pancake butter to cover the bottom of the pan. Swirl it around and place in the oven for around five-minutes. 5 Pour vegetable oil into another heated pan and sear the sea bream by placing it, skin-side down on to the pan. 6 Turn down the heat and fry for two minutes before placing it inside the preheated oven for a further two minutes. 7 Remove the sliced fennel from the lemon juice and mix it with the parsley leaves then season with sea salt.
