AT BETHEL!
Parents will find bags of soft toys
for children at the entrance to
the worship areas. Thank you
for doing what you can to help
in creating a worship environ-
ment where all can participate
by keeping distracting noise and
movement to a minimum. If you
prefer, a nursery is available
Sunday mornings at Bethel
Highlands (9:30 am).
BAPTIZED
Receiving the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at the 5:30 Saturday ser-
vice is Ayden Robert Deneen, son of Alissa & Bryan Deneen.
PLEASE WEAR A NAMETAG TODAY During these weekends of September we’re asking everyone to grab a nametag before coming into worship. You’ll be able to identify your “neighbors” and you will help our pastors gain a better grasp on individual names and families. We want to keep Bethel a warm, wel-coming, personable and inviting place where we’re able to call each other by name . . . Thanks for your help and cooperation! SENIOR ADULTS—THERE’S STILL TIME TO SIGN UP!
Senior adults, please plan to join us for another great luncheon on Monday, September 15th from 12 noon to 1:30. We’ll be in the fellowship hall at our Downtown campus for a tasty catered lunch. Our Hudson mayor and Bethel member, Alan Burchill will be our speaker and will update us on some of the new things going on in Hudson. We’ll also have special music from Bethel semi-narian, Stephen Hilding. The cost is $7.00 per person and
yes, you’re welcome to bring a friend or two. Don’t miss this great opportunity for not only food and friendships, but also faith and fun! It won’t be the same without you! You can sign up Downtown in the church office.

WE WISH YOU THE BEST, J.D.! Bethel has been blessed this summer with a terrific youth ministry intern in J.D. Mechelke. We thank J.D. for his energy, passion, and commitment to caring for all those he has met. He could not have done a better job this summer—it only took him three months to leave a legacy. We wish him only the best as he continues to pursue his degree in Children, Youth and Family ministries at Augsburg College. God's blessings!

A big thank you to all those who volunteered over the summer to make Wednesday Outdoor Worship (WOW) possible. Thank you to each of the weekly volunteers who set up the worship space, greeted, led music, spoke, assisted with worship, helped with offering, prepared and served the snacks, and sent people on their way with a positive word. We were so fortunate this summer that each of the nine Wednesday evenings were beautiful! It was another great summer to gather in worship in God's great outdoors.

METROPOLITAN MEZZO
SOPRANO RECITAL
AT BETHEL DOWNTOWN
On Saturday, September 20 at 7:30 pm, Bethel's Downtown sanctuary will be the location of a song recital by mezzo soprano Margaret Jane Wray, Metropolitan Opera soprano and Hudson resident; accompanied by Skip James. The concert is spon-sored by The Phipps Center for the Arts, and tickets are $20. But what is surprising and remarkable is that our church was chosen for this event because of its excellent acoustics. Last year, the Phipps chorus sang there, and although the Phipps stage is suitable for drama, it is not at its best with musical events. We are pleased that the Downtown sanctuary is recognized for its acoustic properties, and we hope that many other Phipps classical music concerts will take place here in the future.
The event, called "From Brahms to Bacharach" will include not only opera arias, Italian art song and German lieder, but also music by Gershwin, Lerner and Loew, pop standards and show tunes, known and loved by all. There might even be a bit of audience participation. Don't miss this chance to hear a great voice in a great space! There will be refreshments and conver-sation afterward. ~ Skip James, Music Director

YOUTH MINISTRY LEADERSHIP TRAINING THIS WEEKEND
Reminder for all Sunday school teachers, station leaders, 6th and 7th grade small group guides, and confir-mation guides: teacher training will be held SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 from 5-8 pm at the Highlands
campus. Please RSVP to Pastor Ben at [email protected]. WOMEN OF BETHEL COUNCIL MEETING The WOB council will meet on Monday, September 8th at 3 pm Downtown.
WOMEN OF BETHEL BIBLE STUDY KICK-OFF
We welcome all women of Bethel to the Gathering Bible Study Kick-off at Bethel Highlands on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7 pm. Pastor Alicia will lead session 1 of the study, "Transformation and Conversion". The study will be hosted by the Mary and Ruth gatherings.
In all nine sessions we will meet biblical characters who find themselves transformed in several ways. We will read passages from both the Acts of the Apostles and insights in Paul's letters to the Christians at Corinth and Rome. Our first Bible story of transformation is Paul's encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. In the process we will examine conversion as a type of transformation and begin to think about transformation in our own lives and faith journeys. PRAYER TEAM STARTS LOOKING UP ONCE AGAIN THIS FALL Starting in September, you are invited to join with a small group of people who gather at the Bethel Downtown campus in the lounge to pray for the people and ministries of Be-thel, the greater Hudson community, and world concerns. We are always open to new individuals joining us. If you have the hour from 2-3 pm open on Wednesdays, consider joining this faithful group of people to gather together, share in devo-tions, and pray. BELLS AND CHIMES REHEARSALS The Bethel Bell Ensemble rehearsals have begun! Come and give it a try on Thursdays at 5:30 pm at the
Highlands campus The Children’s Chime Choir (now open to grades 2-6) meets right after Sunday school at Highlands, begin-
ning September 21st! The Junior Bell Ensemble has been cancelled. The Chime Choir is now open to students in grades 2-6. SCHOOL SUPPLY COLLECTION CONTINUES We are continuing to collect new school supplies for Wolf Creek School on the Pine Ridge Reservation and for Lutheran World Relief. Bethel’s mission team will deliver the supplies to the reservation when they visit in October. The Women of Bethel are coordinating the LWR effort. Please see the list of supplies needed for LWR at the welcome center at either Bethel campus. (There is no specific list for Pine Ridge.) Cash donations are also welcome. Please specify “LWR school bags” and/or “Pine Ridge supplies”, then place in an envelope at either wel-come center. Thank you for considering these very worthwhile ministries. PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL—A FREE SEMINAR BY O’CONNELL FUNERAL HOMES All are welcome to attend a FREE preplanning seminar to discuss the process and learn how easy it can be. Other presenters will include local attorney, Jennifer O’Neill and a Pekin Insurance representative. Dinner will be served, and there will be drawings and giveaways. Wednesday, September 10th, 11 am and 6:30 pm at our Hudson Chapel (520 11th St. S.) and Thursday, September 11th, 11 am and 6:30 pm at our Baldwin Chapel (1010 Newton St.). Please RSVP to www.oconnellfuneralhomes.com or 715.386.3725.

YOUNG AT HEARTS TRIP IS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY BEGINS THURSDAY All women are invited to join the Women’s Bible study on Thursdays from 9:15-11 am at the Highlands campus. We’ll start a new study called “Animate Faith” on September 11th. Meet at the orange couches at the west end of the building.
ADULT BIBLE DISCUSSION RESUMES NEXT SUNDAY
How can we apply the Gospel lesson in our daily lives? Find out for yourself as the Adult Bible Discussion group begins anew on Sunday, September 14, at 9:15 am in the conference room at Bethel Downtown. We use the Daily Discipleship study sheet found on the ELCA.org web site as a guide for discussion. Sometimes (often?) we stray from the guide to discuss, as a group, questions about our faith journey. We welcome you to drop by to join the lively discussions. The door is always open! If you have questions, please contact Karen Pavlis, Facilitator, at [email protected].
VIA DE CRISTO FALL WEEKENDS: A SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL RENEWAL Grab an application at either welcome center to attend one of two Via de Cristo weekends this Fall. Men’s week-end September 25-28, women’s weekend is October 2-5. This is a great opportunity for spiritual renewal: over 50 Bethel members have taken advantage of this opportunity to grow in their faith. If you have any questions please contact Paul or Ann Martinson or Chuck Lewis through the church office (715.386.8821 or [email protected]). Applications can be given to Chuck Lewis or dropped off in the church office. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED SPONSORING A NEW MEMBER?
Would you like to share your knowledge and enthusiasm of Bethel with someone new to our church community? Because there are many fun opportunities to grow and serve within Bethel, sometimes new members can be overwhelmed at where to start! You can help, by offering to sponsor a new member, couple, or family. This is a short-term, no cost commitment and one great bonus is a new friendship with long term advantages! Please e-mail Juli Hilding at [email protected] or call her at 715.386.8821 ext. 27 for more information, or to sign up.

We want to create a place where students know they are supported and embraced. We want to create an oasis, a refuge, a place of Engedi. This is the name of the new youth room, being built in the south wing of Bethel’s Downtown campus.
The work on the Engedi room continues! Thank you to the many hands who help each week to create this welcoming and safe place for youth for generations to come. If you would like to help with the project, please contact Pastor Ben at [email protected] or 715.386.8821, ext. 24.

KICK-OFF IS THIS WEEK!
Join others connected to the preschool community for coffee and conversation at the welcome center at the Highlands campus. Stop in after preschool drop-off on Wednes-day, September 10th for Caribou Coffee. Let the kids play while the grown-ups enjoy a short devotional at 9:05 am. A fun way to start your day! All are welcome every Wednesday.
COMING TO A PEW NEAR YOU
Earlier this year our Bethel membership was surveyed. The tallied re-sults showed that a top prior-ity, across all ages, is the de-velopment of ministries that work toward healing those broken by life circumstances.
In response to that request we will be starting monthly awareness campaigns.
October’s focus: Anchoring with the
Community Around Addiction
If you have any questions, please contact Jean Johnson, Sandra Larson or Pastor Alicia.
BACK THIS
FALL . . .
Last year we tried something new at Bethel called "The Small Group Experience”. The Small Group Experience was a congregation-wide initiative to encourage everyone to meet in small groups for one hour of conversation and Bible study during a one-month period. Because the two times we offered The Small Group Experience went so well, we are going to offer it again this October. You are invited to sign up for a small group on the week-ends of September 20/21 and 27/28 during worship or directly with Pastor Alicia ([email protected]). No experience is necessary. Bring a friend, neighbor, or relative with you! This is a great way to get more connected to the Bethel community!
What does faith have to do with healing? EVERYTHING! Luke 4:18
PRESCHOOL PRAYER PARTNERS God has blessed the Bethel community with an excellent preschool. One way we as a church can show our support and care for these children of God is through prayer. There are almost 150 preschool children who would like a Prayer Partner this year!
By signing up to be a Preschool Prayer Partner, you commit to regular prayer, as well as sending cards on spe-cial days. If you would like to commit to praying for one of the students on an ongoing basis, please sign up and fill out a volunteer application (required) at either welcome center or download one online.
If you were a Prayer Partner last year, there is no need to fill out another application—just let Pastor Ben know that you would like to continue with this ministry
