I hope that you all enjoyed the first ½ of your summer in Arizona. For those who vacated the heat of Arizona.. Lucky You! Is the weather getting hotter, or are we just getting older.? I thought for sure, that I was back in the Bronx, hanging out on the fire escape to cool down.
Beth Emeth has had several major repairs these last couple of months. Namely, our walk-in refrigerator has succumb to the heat, and has cooled its last bottle of soda. Thankfully, while we are investigating the purchase or repair, Kat & Nelson Magedman have generously donated their extra fridge.
The sprinkling system has taken a bath. Many leaks have to be repaired.
The circuit breaker gave itself a shock!. Repairs are in progress.
The good news is, $10.00 Tuesday has been a great success. Many of our mem-bers have responded generously with so much more that the $10. We raised al-most $3,000! I thank all of you for giving, whether your donation was great or small, you helped support our needs. Keep up the good work, remember there are only 208 Tuesdays a year-with a few extra.
I am hoping that every member placed their dedication ad in the Book of Re-membrance. Please don’t forget the soldiers who gave their heart and soul to protect us.

FROM THE DESK OF RABBI TRACEE ROSEN
I’m so happy to be back in the office after a summer of relative rest & relaxation. Living in an almost 50 year old home is often like living in an older body. One by one, major systems broke down: the pool cleaner, the air conditioner, the main circuit breaker for all the electricity, and the sprinkler system. The hardest was the air conditioner, where over the 4th of July holiday, we couldn’t get the inside of the house to be cooler than 93 degrees during the day, even with all our fans working hard. Eventually, we gave up & spent 4 nights at a hotel until the part came in and they could fix it. We made the best of the situation by calling it our “staycation.”
While dealing with all these incidents was stressful, I also took time to be grateful that we had the resources to weather (pun intended) these challenges successfully. Reports this year from the Federal Reserve Bank tell us that 40% of adults in this country couldn’t pay for a $400 unplanned expense without having to borrow money or forego paying another bill. That’s a horrifying statistic.
I also thought of others nearby who have been spending time even indoors in this scorching heat, for whom the situation was not just temporary. Last year, 119 people died in Maricopa County because of the heat, almost half of them indoors in uncooled settings. A woman from Sun City passed away soon after APS shut off her electricity for being delinquent on her payment even though she had made a partial payment. Human beings are being detained at our southern border for weeks on end without adequate air conditioning, food or hygiene facilities.
Most of us grew up believing that having a roof over our heads, food to eat, clothing, and the ability to live in relative comfort are the norm. And for the vast majority of us, that is still true. But we have to realize that the basics of decent living are ours, not because we are more deserving than others, but because we happened to be fortunate enough to live in the right place at the right time. With our awareness and our gratitude also comes a call to action.
We have a responsibility to share what bounty we have with others who are less fortunate. In Parashat Eikev, which we will read on August 24, we are told that once we settle in the Promised Land, and we have gained wealth, we need to be careful not to take the attitude of “My own power and the might of my own hand have won this wealth for me.(8:17)” Indeed, our financial lot, and the fate of others is determined by larger forces operating in this world. Some call it “Acts of God,” others call it luck or fate. In any case, our tradition teaches that we have a special responsibility to those less fortunate. We don’t believe that a poor lot in life is a punishment from God. Instead, Jewish law views it as an inequality that it is up to us to remedy. “Remember, you were strangers in the Land of Egypt, therefore do not oppress the stranger,” the Torah says.
As we still have more than a month of severe summertime weather to get through this season, please let’s make a special effort to remember and to help those who don’t have the resources to live in safety in this climate. And let us all pause to reflect on the gratitude we have for the ability to keep safe and keep cool* Rabbi Tracee

Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS)
Ellie Schwartzberg of Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS) offers individual counseling, referral to appropriate resources and advocacy to Jewish people living in the Sun Cities and surrounding communities. This is a free program underwritten by the Jewish Federation. Ellie has a Master’s degree in counseling from ASU and has been at JFCS for the past 32 years working with an older population. She is currently the Vice President of Geriatric Services at JFCS. Ellie offers this program at the Sun Cities Community Services Building on Tuesdays (9451 N. 99th Ave. Sun City) and at Beth Emeth Synagogue (13702 W. Meeker, Sun City West) on Thursdays. Counseling addresses such issues as coping with bereavement and loss, care-giving stress, long term planning and decision making, adjustment to chronic health problems, loss of inde-pendence, depression, couples’ issues, communication and problem solving with adult children, etc. Ellie facilitates a Bereavement Support Group at Beth Emeth Congregation every Thursday from 1:00-2:00 PM. This group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse or significant other within the past two years.
