Dear Friends,Hanukkah is almost upon us and itis therefore worthwhile to reviewthe importance of our Festival ofLights. While most people arefamiliar with the story of the one-day supply of oil which lasted foreight days, the holiday embodies afar more important message. TheJews, in the time of the Maccabees(2nd Century B.C.E.), wereoppressed by the Syrian-Greek dic-
tator Antiochus who forbid the Jews from studyingTorah or from circumcising their sons. Judah and hisfollowers fought a valiant battle and ultimately defeateda military force many times larger than their own. Thatis why we recite the prayer Al Hanisim (for all the mira-cles) throughout Hanukkah which includes the follow-ing words:
[We thank You] for the miracles, for the redemption, for the mighty deeds, for the saving acts, and for thewonders which You have wrought for our ancestors inthose days, at this time. In the days of Matityahu, the sonof Yochanan the High Priest, the Hasmonean and hissons, when the wicked Hellenic government rose upagainst Your people Israel to make them forget YourTorah and violate the decrees of Your will. But You, inYour abounding mercies, stood by them in the time oftheir distress. You waged their battles, defended theirrights, and avenged the wrong done to them. You deliv-ered the mighty into the hands of the weak, the manyinto the hands of the few, the impure into the hands ofthe pure, the wicked into the hands of the righteous, andthe wanton sinners into the hands of those who occupythemselves with Your Torah. You made a great andholy name for Yourself in Your world, and affected agreat deliverance and redemption for Your peopleIsrael to this very day. Then Your children entered theshrine of Your House, cleansed Your Temple, purifiedYour Sanctuary, kindled lights in Your holy courtyards, and instituted these eight days of Hanukkah to givethanks and praise to Your great Name.
Today, while we American Jews surely live in a countrywhich is largely Christian, there are no outside pressuresfor us to abandon God’s commandments. Any Jew isfree to study Torah if he or she wishes. Sadly, most donot exercise that right. Nobody stops a Jew from cir-cumcising their sons, although there are indeed somemisguided Jews who brazenly forsake this Mitzvah. Wecan be as Jewish as we wish to be --- or not! But thechoice is ours.
Arthur LavinskyRabbi
The Rabbi is available for you!In addition to being able to schedule appointmentswith Rabbi Lavinsky throughout the week, he has alsoestablished “drop by” office hours from 8 – 11 a.m.on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Furthermore, if you are in the hospital or anotherinstitution, or if you are unable to leave your home,Rabbi Lavinsky will happily visit you wherever youare. Just call the Rabbi at 602.944.3359, ext 108.
Remember – we’re here to serve you.
According to many scholars, the story of the miracle ofthe cruse of oil was fabricated because in retrospect, thevictory of the Maccabees was relatively short lived.Within generations, the descendants of these proudJewish warriors voluntarily shed their Jewish traditions, embraced Hellenism (Greek culture) and assimilated. The rabbis therefore minimized the military conquestof the Maccabees and stressed, instead, the importanceof keeping our spiritual beings alive. The light of theHanukkiyah (the Hanukkah Menorah) captures thatJewish spirit that must never be allowed to extinguish, even long after the Festival of Lights is concluded.
As usual, our observance of Hanukkah comes at aboutthe same time of the year that our Christian neighborscelebrate Christmas. Let us remember that the purposeof Hanukkah is not, God forbid, to compete withChristianity or our Christian neighbors. By all means, greet your non-Jewish neighbors as graciously and aswarmly as you would like to be greeted as you celebrateyour holidays. But Hanukkah is not a Jewish Christmas– it is our declaration that we embrace a faith and tradi-tion which is beautiful and unique and from which otherreligions have taken root. As Jews, there is much for usto be proud of. As we light the candles on our Menorot, let’s ensure that the flame of Judaism burns brightly inour homes and in our hearts.
Happy Hanukkah!Rabbi Arthur Lavinsky

Shalom,EXTREME COUPONING
Extreme couponing is a “way oflife” for congregant and “mitzvahcoupon lady” Beth Shernoff. Shecombines shopping skills withcoupon clipping – in an attempt tosave as much money as possiblewhile accumulating the most in gro-ceries and sundry items.
As it turns out, she has been working at honing this par-ticular skill since 2008. As the economy back then wasweakening – and with her daughter starting graduateschool and planning a 2010 wedding at the same time,Beth decided it was time to take action – to figure outhow to get the “most bang for her hard earned dollar.”As she looked into her household budget and at whatshe was spending for food and sundry items, she foundvaluable information on the internet and taught herselfhow to maximize the use of coupons.
Speaking with Beth, I could feel her excitement, it wasthat contagious. She claims that her shopping trips arelike “winning the lottery.” Internet sites offer all theinformation she needs -- from which store is offering thebest prices – to the exact coupon publication that has thecoupons she will need for her shopping experience. Shehas come into the synagogue office with boxes loadedwith goods that may have cost her pennies. She has alsoreceived store gift cards because of how she has maxi-mized her purchases, and then is able to purchase moreitems using coupons and the gift cards. A continuouscycle of playing with money! Again, she always wins!
It’s been several months now that we have asked you todrop off your coupons so that Beth NOW has access tocoupons by the hundreds. With the coupons, you havekept her very busy. She shops – using next to no money– and manages to fill the Isaiah’s Box in our lobby withitems for Interfaith Cooperative Ministries (ICM). Now,just before the holiday season, we start collecting itemsfor Sojourners, a shelter for abused women and theirchildren. We collect toys for the kids living atSojourners – so they can have gifts to unwrap during theholidays – and for the moms, we collect the sundry itemsthat every women needs. Beth has been shopping toensure that we have plenty of products to deliver to thewomen and children that have run away from theirhomes with literally nothing but the clothes on theirback. In addition to the items she donates to ICM andSojourners, she also donates goods to the BrentShernoff Toy Fund at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

What an exceptional woman Beth is. She spendshours at her computer – and then she shops for theorganizations she is passionate about. Her husband,Neil, has accompanied her in this shopping addictionand is truly amazed at what his wife if able to buy, saveand donate! She averages a savings of 75% to100%...and this is no joke!
If you have time to give Beth a helping hand or if thereare any B’nai Mitzvah students in need of a mitzvahproject, she would welcome the help! In this case, itappears that everyone benefits. The price you wouldpay is minimal, the personal reward – priceless!
Have a wonderful holiday season.Anne

EDUCATION News
We often talk about the power of one, since each of us, when joining with otherscreates a powerful community. In mid-November, I experienced a very powerfulcommunity – a USY LEAD kinnus. Fiveof our USYers participated in the 4 dayprogram and I feel very privileged to haveshared that with them. Rather than use alot of words to describe my experience, Idecided to share some photos with you.Ask Emily Ulan, Jeremy Winkelman,Hannah Cooper, Ben Singer and Michael
Anthony to describe the weekend for you. Make sure youhave plenty of time when you ask them!

Preschool NewsThe cooler temperatures have finally arrivedand that means preparing for Hanukkah. The classes are all learning about the holi-days through crafts, stories and songs. Thesmell of latkes and sufganiot fill the hallways. We all know how special Hanukkah can beand how en-light-ning it is for us and the com-munity. Linda Feldman from the Bureau ofJewish Education will once again come toteach the children how to make oil. Theywill learn to squash olives and then watch, as
if by magic, they turn into oil. Our Parent Teacher Organizationruns a Hanukkah holiday room. The children enter the room thathas been beautifully decorated and they enjoy arts & crafts and aspecial snack.
December also brings us something “grand” – Grandpersons Day.A family member, neighbor or friend of each child is sent an invi-tation to attend class and celebrate Shabbat at school. We willmeet in the Synagogue with Rabbi Lavinsky for special songs andlighting the Shabbat candles and then go back to the classroomsfor snack and arts & crafts. It is a real joy watching them together, working side by side. We all walk away from the day feelingGRAND!
As we finish our first semester of the school year, I want to takethis opportunity to thank all the staff for a job well done. Workingwith children is a gift and a privilege, but it is also hard work andtakes a lot of patience. We celebrate each child as an individualand work hard to ensure that their educational needs are beingmet in a stimulating and nurturing environment. Through theirteachings, the children learn about their Jewish identity. We wanteach child to leave here as an independent, problem solving andcaring child.
I wish you all a happy Hanukkah and hope the spirit of thisHanukkah keeps glowing in your hearts forever.

Movie Time at Beth ElThe Frisco Kid
Sunday, December 16th4:00 p.m.
Robert Aldrich returns to the western-spoofgenre he'd previously explored in Four forTexas with The Frisco Kid. Gene Wilderplays Polish rabbi Avram Belinsky, whointends to set up a congregation in SanFrancisco. Eminently unsuited for life in theOld West, poor Avram is victimized by every-one with whom he comes in contact. Salvationarrives in the unlikely form of taciturn bankrobber Tommy (Harrison Ford). Incredibly,Tommy takes a liking to the feckless Avram, and together the two men embark on a seriesof seriocomic adventures.Excerpt from Rottentomatoes.com
