FirstReading:Genesis11:1-9 1Nowthewholeearthhadonelanguageandthesamewords.2Andastheymigratedfromtheeast,theycameuponaplaininthelandofShinarandsettledthere.3Andtheysaidtooneanother,“Come,letusmakebricks,andburnthemthoroughly.”Andtheyhadbrickforstone,andbitumenformortar.4Thentheysaid,“Come,letusbuildourselvesacity,andatowerwithitstopintheheavens,andletusmakeanameforourselves;otherwiseweshallbescatteredabroaduponthefaceofthewholeearth.”5TheLORDcamedowntoseethecityandthetower,whichmortalshadbuilt.6AndtheLORDsaid,“Look,theyareonepeople,andtheyhaveallonelanguage;andthisisonlythebeginningofwhattheywilldo;nothingthattheyproposetodowillnowbeimpossibleforthem.7Come,letusgodown,andconfusetheirlanguagethere,sothattheywillnotunderstandoneanother’sspeech.”8SotheLORDscatteredthemabroadfromthereoverthefaceofalltheearth,andtheyleftoffbuildingthecity.9ThereforeitwascalledBabel,becausetheretheLORDconfusedthelanguageofalltheearth;andfromtheretheLORDscatteredthemabroadoverthefaceofalltheearth.
