FRIDAY JUNE 11TH PUP IL FREE DAY
ROAD SAFETY FOR OUR KIDS
We were lucky to avoid a potential road
accident involving one of our P-2 children
earlier this week in Mansfield Street at the
bus stop outside our school. A parent
reported that the young boy lost control of
a ball he was playing with and ran onto the
road to retrieve it. Were it not for the fact
that the driver was driving well within the
40kmh speed limit she believes that she
would have hit him. We will as usual
reinforce with our children safe road
practice and ask you to do the same. In
saying this, I am fully aware that kids can
forget in the heat of the moment safe road
practice.
As my father used to tell me in
exasperation when I was child – ―In one
ear son and out the other.‖ Occasionally
he would check my ears and shake his head
and then say, ―I don‘t think it even went
in!‖
The relevant points for adults are that we
must be that we have to remind kids
(though we all hate nagging them and they
hate being nagged), that we have to set a
good example ourselves and as drivers we
must be vigilante and drive slowly around
school zones during the week.
STAFFING
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I can
now announce that Debbie Cusack will be
returning to Berwick lodge next week,
reappointed to the Assistant Principal
position that she vacated a month ago
when she retired under the 54/11
retirement scheme for public servants.
In saying this my thanks are extended to
Sue Naismith for the excellent way in
which she managed the Acting AP role for
the past month and also Bernadette Kelly
who stepped in the role earlier this week
while Sue Naismith was on camp.

REVOLUTION (BER UPDATE)
I have attached a copy of an open letter
that sent to the Deputy Prime Minister,
Julia Gillard on the weekend, following the
visit from the BER Implementation
Taskforce last Friday, a report I received
from Hamilton Design, Berwick, our BER
private consultants and my visit to
Beaumaris P.S. on Thursday to see a
library/6 classroom template building the
same as what we will be getting.
I wrote the letter because we are facing a
very poor outcome for our school unless
Julia Gillard steps in. The key points are as
follows:
(1) The building has virtually no joinery –
estimates put the cost at $100,000 to
install adequate joinery. We would
have to foot this bill
(2) The cooling system (thermal chimney)
is completely inadequate and at our
cost we would have to install a
refrigerated central cooling system –
up to $150,000
(3) There is no provision for outdoor
covered ways or adequate landscaping
- $30,000 at our cost
(4) The template is very poorly designed
from a cost effective perspective and
the layers of management and
documentation according to our
q u a n t i t y s u r v e y o r ( S w i f t
Constructions) is befitting of a $50
million project, not a $3 million
project. Hamilton Design, who project
managed the local Ford and
Volkswagen Showroom projects, both
delivered at under $3 million each, are
certain that they could deliver our
template (with design changes) for $2
million - leaving one million to ensure
that we are not out of pocket by
$250,000 to bring it up to scratch.
Incidentally, the Ford and Volkswagen
Showrooms are far more elaborate
buildings with 3 to four times the floor
space of our template building!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
(FAQ’s)
Q. What happens when my child
forgets to bring their lunch to school?
A. Firstly, we try to contact the parents to
see if it is possible for them to bring the
child‘s lunch. If this fails we provide the
child with an option of 3 sandwiches –
vegemite, cheese or ham at a cost of
between $1.60 and $2.00. This is provided
via our canteen service. A note to this
effect is given to your child to take home,
the note requesting payment for the
sandwich. We also offer the child a choice
of free fruit..

PREP ENROLMENTS FOR 2011
Thank you to our families with Prep
students for 2011 who have contacted
the office for enrolment forms. At this
stage we have confirmed 30 enrolments
for Prep next year, with this number
growing daily. Many of these children
are from our existing families. For our
planning purposes it is beneficial for us to
know our projected prep enrolment well
in advance. We also need to be aware
of students with special needs who may
require submissions for extra support at
school. Families with queries regarding
this matter are encouraged to make
contact with us to discuss the options
available to provide support.

STUDENT WELLBEING NEWS
SICK CHILDREN
At this time of the year many children
easily pick up coughs, colds and viruses.
In recent weeks it has been noticed that
some students are presenting at school
with symptoms of illness that are easily
spread. In some cases this has
necessitated us contacting parents to
collect their children. It has also meant
that other students and staff have
become ill as a result of being in close
contact with the ill child. We request
that families are mindful of how easily
these illnesses are spread and in the best
interest of our community, unwell
children remain at home.
Further to this, it is timely to remind our
children of safe hygiene practices such as
washing hands before eating, using and
disposing of tissues correctly and
covering their mouth and nose when
coughing and sneezing. We thank
parents for their support in this matter.
WINTER CLOTHING
With the onset of the cooler weather
this week we thought it timely to remind
all families of the need for students to
wear appropriate clothing to school.
Although the children may be warm in
the comforts of their home, car and
classroom they need to be rugged up
when going outside to play. A warm,
cosy jumper or jacket and named,
weather proof coat is strongly
recommended at this time of the year.
There is currently an overabundance of
lost property and this raises two
concerns. Firstly, as most of the clothing
items are not clearly named, they cannot
be returned promptly to their rightful
owners. We understand clothing is
expensive and it is difficult to distinguish
individual ownership of similar items and
so we are asking you to please ensure
all clothing is clearly named.
Secondly, we are concerned with the
large number of lost items that are not
being collected and ask for your
assistance in checking whether your
children are missing items of clothing.
Lost property is located in the corridor
halfway down the main building and is
accessible during school hours.
CURRICULUM NEWS
GRADE 5/6 CAMP
This week our
Year Five and
Six students
have attended
their camp at
Sovereign Hill.
Our staff have
reported that
the students
have been very well behaved and have
thoroughly enjoyed experiencing a taste
of what life was like for people living
during the Gold Rush period of our
history. The gold panning has been a
great hit, with many students being
convinced that they may ‗find their
fortune‘. The first group of weary
campers returned yesterday and the
second group will return tomorrow at
approximately 3:00PM. Parents are
reminded that students are to be signed
out when collected. Staff members will
have lists for this purpose. If the
weather is fine students will assemble in
the courtyard for dismissal. In the case
of poor weather, the children will be
dismissed from the gymnasium.
